A novel heuristic algorithm for the modeling and risk assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic phenomenon
2020
This article belongs to the special issue: Soft computing techniques in materials science and engineering Summarization: The modeling and risk assessment of a pandemic phenomenon such as COVID-19 is an important and complicated issue in epidemiology, and such an attempt is of great interest for public health decision-making. To this end, in the present study, based on a recent heuristic algorithm proposed by the authors, the time evolution of COVID-19 is investigated for six different countries/states, namely New York, California, USA, Iran, Sweden and UK. The number of COVID-19-related deaths is used to develop the proposed heuristic model as it is believed that the predicted number of dai…

Long-term prediction of birth weight
1993
On the basis of the hypothesis that undisturbed individual growth in fetal life keeps a constant proportional difference with the standard population 50th percentile, birth weight can be predicted with a single sonographic exploration after the 16th week of pregnancy. Data on 135 singleton pregnancies with accurate dates and delivery at term were used. Sonography was performed between the 17th and 36th weeks of pregnancy, in every case at least 4 weeks before delivery. The observed measurements of BPD, FL, and AC were used for the prediction of their values on the day of delivery, applying the Hadlock equation for the estimation of birth weight. The mean error of birth weight predictions wa…
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: Introducing the preoperative prediction score based on preoperative imaging.
2020
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) still has a poor long-term outcome, even after complete resection. We investigated different parameters gathered in preoperative imaging and analyzed their influence on resectability, recurrence, and survival. All patients who underwent exploration due to ICC between January 2008 and June 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. Kaplan-Meier model, log-rank test and Cox regression were used.Out of 184 patients, 135 (73.4%) underwent curative intended resection. Median overall survival (OS) was 22.2 months with a consecutive 1-, 3- and 5-year OS of 73%, 29%, and 17%. Median recurrence-free survival (RFS) was 9.3 months with a consecutive 1-, 3- and 5-year RFS …
Medications between psychiatric and addictive disorders
2016
International audience; Introduction : Many epidemiological studies have revealed a frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric and substance use disorders. The term used in the literature to refer to this co-occurrence is dual diagnosis. The high prevalence of dual diagnosis has led physicians to observe the effects of medication prescribed to treat psychiatric disorders on the co-occurring substance use disorder and vice versa. The concept of medications between psychiatric and addictive disorders stems from these clinical observations, alongside which, however, it has developed from the observation that both psychiatric and substance use disorders share common neurobiological pathways and trig…
The use of the Free Recall Method in the Analysis of Verbal Memory Deficits in Dual Diagnosis Patients
2009
In schizophrenia there are specific cognitive deficits including verbal memory deficits. The objective of this study was to examine short-term verbal memory differences between subjects with and without a dual diagnosis.A group of 80 patients with a diagnose of schizophrenia were examined. 40 of them never used illicit drugs, the other 40 also received a diagnose of addiction to psychoactive substances. The Free Recall Method was used to compare two examined groups. The results of addicted and not addicted schizophrenic patients were analyzed in all trials of the 5 stages of the examination with the use of Free Recall Method. Persons suffering from schizophrenia can usually repeat much fewe…
Advances in Alcoholism Research in Germany
2005
This article presents the proceedings of a symposium at the 2004 International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism meeting in Heidelberg/Mannheim, Germany, put together by the German Society of Addiction Therapy and Research (DG-Sucht e.V.). The aim was to give an overview on recent findings from animal to human studies that were conducted by several research groups engaged in the alcoholism field in Germany for longer periods. Results of his animal studies were presented by J. Wolfgramm; G. Buchringer reported on epidemiologic and psychotherapeutic research advances on alcohol-related disorders in Germany. L. G. Schmidt summarized results of novel diagnostic and therapeutic appro…
Effect of Computer-Aided Navigation Techniques on the Accuracy of Endodontic Access Cavities: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2021
Simple Summary The endodontic access cavity is an essential step in the root canal treatment allowing the access and location of the root canal system. The inaccuracy during the endodontic access cavitie can lead to intraoperative complications such as missed root canals or root perforations, and hence affect the prognosis of the root canal treatment. The development of computer-aided static and dynamic navigation techniques has improved the accuracy of endodontic access cavities and root canal location; however, it is necessary a comparative analysis to clarify which of the computer-aided navigation system is more accurate. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to clarify the root …
Internet addiction, temperament, and the moderator role of family emotional involvement
2014
This study examined the relationship between internet addiction, temperament, and family functioning focusing on the unique and common contribution that temperament and family functioning made to internet addiction. A total of 320 adolescents (164 boys and 156 girls), from 15 to 17 years (M = 16.06, SD = 0.59), completed measures of internet addiction, temperament, and family functioning. Data showed that salience, as the ability of internet to change negatively person’s life, was predicted positively by temperament linked to lack of control and by the perception of low level of familial emotional involvement. Results also revealed that family affective involvement played a moderating role …
Cognitive effects of labeled addictolytic medications
2017
Abstract Introduction Alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug usage is pervasive throughout the world, and abuse of these substances is a major contributor to the global disease burden. Many pharmacotherapies have been developed over the last 50 years to target addictive disorders. While the efficacy of these pharmacotherapies is largely recognized, their cognitive impact is less known. However, all substance abuse disorders are known to promote cognitive disorders like executive dysfunction and memory impairment. These impairments are critical for the maintenance of addictive behaviors and impede cognitive behavioral therapies that are regularly administered in association with pharmacotherapie…
