The journalOsteuropaas a forum for Russian–German academic dialogue

2014

This article focuses on the interdisciplinary, monthly academic journal Osteuropa as a mediator between Russian and German academic discourses, and as a tool for bringing Russian perspectives closer to German intellectual audiences. The historical overview provided in this paper shall show the actors involved in the development of the journal since its founding at the beginning of the twentieth century. The actor–network theory and the Bourdieusian concepts of field and habitus will be deployed to reveal the academic networks Osteuropa is involved in and the role of the actors in them. Osteuropa's Russian collaborative partners and joint publication projects are presented in the paper. The …

Tulevaisuusperspektiivit Aikuiskoulutus nyt -kampanjassa

1990

The Adult Education Now campaign of 1989–1990 is aimed at the implementation of a practice of delegating powers of decision in Finnish educational planning. The idea is to inspire educators in the field to seek out alternative means of adult education. The goal is to activate the various parties to find new areas in adult education, to clarify the situation with regard to the changes taking place in the work of teachers, and to attract the attention of the public to the state of adult education and its potentials. The campaign is a progressive one – it includes a distinct endeavour to cope with the changing environment of the future. With premises such as these, the campaign represents an i…

Modeling Radicalization and Violent Extremism

2020

Given public anxiety about radicalization and violent extremism, it is not surprising that these topics have grabbed the attention of so many scholars in recent years. However, some have expressed concern over the fact that only a few studies in this relatively new field contain empirical data or systematic data analysis or develop causal models of the mechanisms generating these phenomena. We believe that computational modeling and simulation techniques can make a significant contribution to this scientific literature and eventually provide new tools for improving policy analysis. Here we briefly describe (1) an integrative theory of violent extremism proposed by Kruglanski and colleagues …

A future of journalism beyond the objectivity-dialogue divide? : Hybridity in the news of entrepreneurial journalists

2019

As pioneers of new ideas and practices, many entrepreneurial journalists spearhead the change of journalism towards hybridity. By applying appraisal theory, this article examines a hybrid of objectivity and dialogue in daily news articles by five entrepreneurial journalism outlets – Axios, MustRead, National Observer, The Skimm and the Voice of San Diego. For comparative purposes, a dataset from three legacy media outlets was also analysed. The results show that the entrepreneurial journalism outlets employ journalistic dialogue in otherwise stylistically objective news texts notably more often than do legacy media outlets. Dialogic registers provide subtle, non-partisan assessments of eve…

Trajetória docente na transição e na apropriação de tecnologias digitais em práticas de ensino

2018

This study focused on the appropriation of digital technologies by two teachers as an instrument of teaching and instruction in secondary school. We are interested in the teaching trajectory in the transition from traditional practices to hybrid learning contexts. We use mixed methods based on the Grounded Theory and contribution of Theory of Activity and dialogic approach. We chose qualitative research with audio-recorded interview, documental source and field observations of interactions between students in a hybrid context of learning. The main results indicated that the teacher trajectory passes through technological appropriation in: a) conventionalization of a symbolic and semiotic fi…

The President of the gold diggers: Sources of power in a gold mine in Burkina Faso

2003

The article provides an example of how 'formal' and 'informal' modes of power and legitimacy, as well as material and symbolic leadership resources, may intersect and interrelate. It analyses the sources of power that a Big Man in West Africa mobilised in order to appropriate mining rights and to establish leadership in a gold mining camp. As an entrepreneur in an economic field directly regulated by state laws and authorities, he has to operate within these structures while at the same time subverting them by creating a 'system of personal power' that resembles Sahlins' classic model of the Big Man in Melanesia. Although he is elected to represent the gold diggers, his leadership position …

Technologies of Re-familization

2019

In this chapter, the notion of re-familization is introduced, to allow for a better grasp of the cohesive impact of digital technologies in the context of extended and geographically distributed families. In the field of social policy, the notion of re-familization implies a reversal of the politics of de-familization that once was the hallmark of the golden-era welfare state. The argument is made that family-initiated uses of digital media and communication technology in response to (older) family members’ daily help and care needs resonate well with the idea behind re-familization. In conclusion, the chapter presents several ways in which re-familization manifests itself in the everyday l…

Questions in Cognitive Mimetics

2021

Human thinking advances through questions and answers. Any field of human endeavor is permeated by the presence of questions, answers and presuppositions. Questions have a kind of universality, whereby one can place the question marks on anything, including questions themselves. The process of asking the right questions about the right things and in the right way are key for the explication of an approach. Recently, we have begun thinking about an approach to the design of intelligent technology: Cognitive mimetics. In brief, the idea is to take inspiration of empirical human thinking in specific contexts to develop AI solutions. The purpose of this article is to question this approach from…

Metacognition, Metalanguage and Metapragmatics

1993

Abstract In this article, the author briefly reports John Flavell's analysis of metacognition. By attempting to integrate metalinguistic activities into this analysis, the author brings to light several interesting characteristics of the field of meta-linguistics and its current state of research. Firstly, it appears that, unlike other meta-abilities, the metalinguistic abilities are defined in terms of their objects. On this basis, metalinguistic activities are at least partially independent of other metacognitive activities. Secondly, it appears that the position of metapragmatics in relation to meta-linguistics is in need of greater clarification. In particular, it seems necessary to dra…
