Temporal evolution of stress in the year prior to the onset of depressive disorders

1999

Abstract Background . We investigate how the stress levels in a sample of patients with depressive disorders vary in the year prior to the onset of symptoms. Design . Observational study of the case/control type. Fifty patients whose first depressive episode began in the 6 months prior to the interview Method . The LEDS was applied to all the subjects. A calculation was made of the evolution week by week of stress throughout the year prior to the onset. Results . Notable differences were detected in the temporal profile of the stress between the depressive patients and control groups. The differences between them were especially far-reaching in the 26 weeks prior to the onset of the symptom…

Predictors of suicidal ideation in depressive primary care patients.

2009

Suicidal ideation is common in patients suffering from depression, but it often remains undetected. General practitioners play an important role in the management of depression and suicidality. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for suicidal ideation in patients with major depression in primary health care.We conducted a cross-sectional study. Patients were recruited from 74 primary care practices in Germany. Data was collected between April 2005 and July 2006. We calculated a binary logistic regression model to evaluate whether depression severity (Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ-9), physical pain (SF-36 Physical Pain Scale), physical comorbidity, intake of antidepressant m…

Differential effects of exhaustive cycle ergometry on concentric and eccentric torque production.

2001

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential differences in peak isokinetic concentric end eccentric torque following low- and high-intensity cycle exercise fatigue protocols. Ten healthy, recreationally-active men were tested in a balanced, randomized testing sequence for peak eccentric and concentric isokinetic torque (60 degrees/sec) immediately before and after three experimental conditions each separated by 48 hours: 1) a bout of high intensity cycling consisting of a maximal 90-second sprint; 2) a bout of low-intensity cycling at 60 rpm equated for total work with the high-intensity protocol: and 3) no exercise (control bout). Blood was drawn from an antecubital vein and…

Muscle metabolic profile and oxygen transport capacity as determinants of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds

1988

Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds determined by different methods in repeated exercise tests were correlated with cardiorespiratory variables and variables of muscle metabolic profile in 33 men aged 20–50 years. Aerobic threshold was determined from blood lactate, ventilation, and respiratory gas exchange by two methods (AerT1 and AerT2) and anaerobic threshold from venous lactate (AnTLa), from ventilation and gas exchange (AnTr) and by using the criterion of 4 mmol·l−1 of venous lactate (AnT4mmol). In addition to ordinary correlative analyses, applications of LISREL models were used. The 8 explanatory variables chosen for the regression analyses were height, relative heart volume, relative …

Treatment of chronic depression with sulpiride: evidence of efficacy in placebo-controlled single case studies

1994

Systematic variation of treatment (alternating active drug and placebo in four treatment periods) in individual patients is proposed to collect preliminary evidence for a therapeutic effect of sulpiride in chronic depression; the ARIMA model is applied to evaluate the intervention effects of the tentatively effective treatment in single subjects. Ten single cases of chronic depression with a diagnosis of major depression or dysthymia were selected and seven of these provided evidence for beneficial effects of sulpiride with regard to treating the symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, the drug effects were intraindividually not always replicable. The results obtained with these single…

A controlled family study in panic disorder.

1993

Abstract There are only a few family studies in panic disorder. Although there is some evidence that panic disorder is familial, the exact figures of the familial risk for this disorder are at variance across different studies; the impact of comorbidity and of the gender of relatives is also unclear. Family studies in panic disorder controlling for the comorbidity in probands are therefore indicated. This study presents the morbid risks in families of 40 “pure” panic disorder probands (DSM-III-R) without a history of psychotic disorders, major depression or alcoholism compared with families of 80 controls recruited in the general population. The relative frequency of panic disorder (DSM-III…

History of depression but not current depression is associated with signs of atherosclerosis: data from the Gutenberg Health Study.

2013

ObjectivesTo test the vascular depression hypothesis in the general population, we analyzed the association between current depression, medical history of depression, cognitive and somatic depressive symptom dimensions and measures of atherosclerosis [intima–media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaques].MethodWe included a representative sample of 5000 participants from the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). Depression was assessed by the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and IMT and carotid plaques were measured at both common carotid arteries using an edge detection system. Regression analyses were performed separately for participants with and without cardiovascular disease, adjust…

Prevalence of distress, comorbid conditions and well being in the general population.

2011

Abstract Background The purposes of this paper are to determine the prevalence of distress in the community, to identify its determinants and to assess its relationship to somatic conditions and subjective well being. Methods Distress and associated factors were investigated in a random sample of 5000 participants (35–74 years) of a community-based, prospective, observational cohort study in western Mid-Germany (“Gutenberg Heart Study”) between 04/2007 and 10/2008. The sample was stratified 1:1 for gender and residence and in equal strata for decades of age. Data were assessed by self-report instruments, interviews and medical examination. Results We found a prevalence rate for depression o…

Depression in Atrial Fibrillation in the General Population

2013

BACKGROUND: Initial evidence suggests that depressive symptoms are more frequent in patients with atrial fibrillation. Data from the general population are limited. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 10,000 individuals (mean age 56±11 years, 49.4% women) of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study we assessed depression by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and a history of depression in relation to manifest atrial fibrillation (n = 309 cases). The median (25th/75th percentile) PHQ-9 score of depressive symptoms was 4 (2/6) in atrial fibrillation individuals versus 3 (2/6) individuals without atrial fibrillation, P(X2-Test) = 0.32. Multivariable regression analyses of the severity of depressi…
