Undergraduate experiment with fractal diffraction gratings

2011

We present a simple diffraction experiment with fractal gratings based on the triadic Cantor set. Diffraction by fractals is proposed as a motivating strategy for students of optics in the potential applications of optical processing. Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained using standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics laboratories and compared with those obtained with conventional periodic gratings. It is shown that fractal gratings produce self-similar diffraction patterns which can be evaluated analytically. Good agreement is obtained between experimental and numerical results. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Operational modes of a ferroelectric LCoS modulator for displaying binary polarization, amplitude, and phase diffraction gratings

2009

We analyze the performance of a ferroelectric liquid crystal on silicon display (FLCoS) as a binary polarization diffraction grating. We analyze the correspondence between the two polarization states emerging from the displayed grating and the polarization and intensity of the diffracted orders generated at the Fourier diffraction plane. This polarization-diffraction analysis leads, in a simple manner, to configurations yielding binary amplitude or binary phase modulation by incorporating an analyzer on the reflected beam. Based on this analysis, we present two useful variations of the polarization configuration. The first is a simplification using a single polarizer, which provides equival…

All-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser

2006

Abstract An all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser is presented. Q-switching is performed by modulating a fiber Bragg grating via a magnetostrictive rod which is fixed to the fiber at the position of the grating. By exposing the rod to a changing magnetic field, the rod is stretched and relaxed causing the Bragg wavelength of the grating to shift and thereby changes the Q-factor of the cavity. Using Yb-doped fiber, pulses at 1052 nm are obtained at repetition rates from 1 to 200 kHz. At 75 kHz, 0.5 μJ pulses with peak powers of 3 W can be produced when 180 mW of pump power is applied. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser prese…

Fiber Ring Laser Operated by Dynamic Local Phase Shifting of a Chirped Grating

2009

An ultranarrow linewidth erbium-doped fiber ring laser is presented. It is based on the filtering properties of a phase-shifted chirped fiber Bragg grating, which is inserted inside the cavity of the laser. A dynamic control of the phase shifting, which is induced by a magnetostrictive transducer, permits both tunable continuous-wave and actively Q-switched operation. The use of a chirped grating overcomes the limitations imposed by the narrow spectra of uniform gratings observed in previously reported ring lasers based on intracavity transmission filters.

Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator

2007

Abstract We report an actively Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator as Q-switching element. The modulator consists of a short-length fibre Bragg grating modulated by a standing longitudinal elastic wave, being the grating length much shorter than the acoustic wavelength. Q-switch pulses were successfully obtained from an Er3+-doped fibre laser at repetition rates of 18 and 37 kHz.

High spatiotemporal resolution in multifocal processing with femtosecond laser pulses.

2006

We report spatial and temporal dispersion compensation for fan-out of femtosecond pulses with a low-frequency diffraction grating by means of a hybrid diffractive-refractive lens triplet. In this way, we achieve a multifocal light structure with nearly diffraction-limited light spots even for 20 fs pulse duration. The spatial chromatic compensation, which drastically reduces the lateral walk-off of the various spectral components, also allows us to improve the available bandwidth at the dispersion-compensated diffraction orders. In fact, the temporal width of the output pulse is essentially limited by the group-delay dispersion term, which is shown to be small. The high spatiotemporal resol…

Optical field-induced surface-relief micropatterning of amorphous chalcogenide thin films

2015

The study of direct recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous chalcogenide thin (2.5 to 5  μm films is presented by three different recording setups. Recording was performed on As2S3 by 532-nm wavelength laser light. Additionally, the evolution of a surface relief in dependence from the recording time and polarization has been investigated in detail and for the first time, the mass transfer process has been explained from the point of view of the photoinduced birefringence. The role of photoinduced plasticity in the formation of surface relief in amorphous chalcogenides during holographic recording has been discussed.

Optical grating recording in ChG thin film by electron beam

2013

Abstract Recording capabilities of As Se S chalcogenide (ChG) glasses using electron beam (EB) lithography have been investigated in this study. After exposure with EB the thin films of these inorganic glasses can be etched in alkaline amine solvent with high selectivity. High resolution, smooth shaped structures have been fabricated using ChG thin films. Height of developed pattern can be controlled through changing applied electron dose.

Diffraction-efficiency oscillations in amorphous As_2S_3 films

1999

An experimental study of the holographic gratings recorded in nonannealed, thermally with time relaxed amorphous As2S3 films by 514.5-nm light in the presence of 632.8-nm readout light is carried out. The dependences of the maximal first-order diffraction efficiency on the holographic grating period was studied in a wide range of periods, from 0.40 to 70.0 µm. A peculiar oscillatory diffraction-efficiency temporal behavior occurring under certain conditions is reported. The obtained results are discussed in terms of photoinduced structural changes, relaxational structural changes, photoinduced anisotropy, and photoinduced recharging of the localized states in the bandgap. The diffraction-ef…
