Mixed valence mono- and hetero-metallic grid catenanes

Multicomponent self-assembly was employed to obtain, in the solid state, a series of mixed valence mono- and hetero-metallic grid catenanes, which were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction.
New polymorph of InVO4: A high-pressure structure with six-coordinated vanadium

A new wolframite-type polymorph of InVO4 is identified under compression near 7 GPa by in situ high-pressure (HP) X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic investigations on the stable orthorhombic InVO4. The structural transition is accompanied by a large volume collapse (Delta V/V = -14%) and a drastic increase in bulk modulus (from 69 to 168 GPa). Both techniques also show the existence of a third phase coexisting with the low- and high-pressure phases in a limited pressure range close to the transition pressure. Diffraction-free beams in thin films

The propagation and transmission of Bessel beams through nano-layered structures has been discussed recently. Within this framework we recognize the formation of unguided diffraction-free waves with the spot size approaching and occasionally surpassing the limit of a wavelength when a Bessel beam of any order n is launched onto a thin material slab with grazing incidence. On the basis of the plane-wave representation of cylindrical waves, a simple model is introduced providing an exact description of the transverse pattern of this type of diffraction-suppressed localized wave. Isotropic compensation of diffraction-driven angular dispersion

We report on an optical arrangement capable of compensating angular dispersion of paraxial wave fields developed by diffractive optical elements (DOEs). Schematically, the system is a beam expander in which two phase-only zone plates have been inserted, remaining afocal the coupled system. The DOE, which induces a continuous set of dispersive tilted plane waves, is placed at a specific position within the proposed setup providing an output spectrum with achromatic angular deviation. A directional matching between phase fronts and pulse fronts of output wave packets is demonstrated.
Effective Fresnel-number concept for evaluating the relative focal shift in focused beams

We report on an analytical formulation, based on the concept of effective Fresnel number, to evaluate in a simple way the relative focal shift of rotationally nonsymmetric scalar fields that have geometrical focus and moderate Fresnel number. To illustrate our approach, certain previously known results and also some new focusing setups are analytically examined.
Superresolved phase-shifting Gabor holography by CCD shift

Holography in the Gabor regime is restricted to weak diffraction assumptions. Otherwise, diffraction prevents an accurate recovery of the object's complex wavefront. We have recently proposed a modified Gabor-like setup to extend Gabor's concept to any sample provided that it be non-diffusive. However, the resolution of the final image becomes limited as a consequence of the additional elements considered in the proposed setup. Geometrical Transformations In The Fraunhofer Plane

A virtual display of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern is generated solely by illuminating the object with a point source. If this pattern is imaged with an anamorphic system, several linear geometrical transformations can be achieved. Furthermore, a nonsymmetrical Fourier transformer with a variable degree of anamorphic magnification on the Fraunhofer pattern can be implemented.
Electronic properties and high-pressure behavior of wolframite-type CoWO4

In this work we characterize wolframite-type CoWO4 under ambient conditions and under compression up to 10 GPa, with emphasis on its electronic structure. X-Ray diffraction and vibrational experiments, supported by ab initio calculations, show that CoWO4 is stable under high-pressure conditions, as no structural changes are detected in the studied pressure range. Interesting findings come from optical absorption spectroscopy. On the one hand, CoWO4 is confirmed to have one of the lowest band gaps among similar wolframites, around 2.25 eV. Intrinsic Nature of the Excess Electron Distribution at theTiO2(110)Surface

The gap state that appears upon reduction of TiO2 plays a key role in many of titania's interesting properties but its origin and spatial localization have remained unclear. In the present work, the TiO2(110) surface is reduced in a chemically controlled way by sodium adsorption. By means of resonant photoelectron diffraction, excess electrons are shown to be distributed mainly on subsurface Ti sites strikingly similar to the defective TiO2(110) surface, while any significant contribution from interstitial Ti ions is discarded. Disorder in molecular crystals justified with the help of statistical mechanics: a case of two enantiomer solid solutions

An elegant statistical mechanics approach has been exploited in combination with accurate quantum chemical calculations to justify the disorder in two previously reported racemic solids. Generated canonical ensembles and performed lattice energy calculations show that the disorder in the studied systems of small organic enantiomer molecules can be modelled with great accuracy. Ensemble averages fully correspond to the disordered structure models repeatedly obtained in X-ray diffraction studies.
