Thalamic parcellation for target identification in trans-cranial MR-guided Focused UltraSound (tcMRgFUS) thalamotomies: a preliminary probabilistc tr…

2018

Background: Trans-cranial MR-guided Focused UltraSound (tcMRgFUS) allows a neurofunctional exploration of thalamic nuclei to confirm and optimize the target before inducing a permanent brain lesion. However, the choice of the target is based on stereotactic coordinates that do not take into account the anatomical variability of each single patient. Thus, the optimization of the treatment target is based on the patient's feedback during lower power sonications. The aim of this work is to retrospectively evaluate the possible role of thalamic parcellation for the identification of the intermediate ventral nucleus (VIM) in patients undergoing tcMRgFUS. Materials and Methods: A 1.5T MR scanner …

Diffusion of point defects in shocked molecular crystals

2005

The dynamic response of a molecular crystal containing defects to shock wave loading is modeled and the resulting diffusion of point defects is simulated. It is shown that diffusion proceeds not only via the stress assisted diffusion, which is point defect diffusion in a stress field, also known as the Gorsky effect, but also through defect diffusion in the field of inertial forces. The method for modeling diffusion of point defects in shocked solids is developed. It is shown that diffusion in the inertial field significantly exceeds the stress diffusion in organic molecular crystals. Interplay between stress-assisted and inertial diffusion leads to the separation of light particles from he…

Low-cost high-haze films based on ZnO nanorods for light scattering in thin c-Si solar cells

2015

Light scattering from ZnO nanorods (NR) is investigated, modeled, and applied to a solar cell. ZnO NR (120-1300 nm long, 280-60 nm large), grown by low-cost chemical bath deposition at 90 degrees C, exhibit diffused-to-total transmitted light as high as 70% and 30% in the 400 and 1000 nm wavelength range, respectively. Data and scattering simulation show that ZnO NR length plays a crucial role in light diffusion effect. A transparent ZnO NR film grown on glass and placed on top of a 1 mu m thick c-Si solar cell is shown to enhance the light-current conversion efficiency for wavelengths longer than 600 nm. Structural and dynamical properties of sodium silicate melts: An investigation by molecular dynamics computer simulation

2001

We present the results of large scale computer simulations in which we investigate the static and dynamic properties of sodium disilicate and sodium trisilicate melts. We study in detail the static properties of these systems, namely the coordination numbers, the temperature dependence of the Q^(n) species and the static structure factor, and compare them with experiments. We show that the structure is described by a partially destroyed tetrahedral SiO_4 network and the homogeneously distributed sodium atoms which are surrounded on average by 16 silicon and other sodium atoms as nearest neighbors. We compare the diffusion of the ions in the sodium silicate systems with that in pure silica a…

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance for Cultural Heritage

2007

Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) portable devices are now being used for nondestructive in situ analysis of water content, pore space structure and protective treatment performance in porous media in the field of cultural heritage. It is a standard procedure to invert T 1 and T 2 relaxation data of fully water-saturated samples to get “pore size” distributions, but the use of T 2 requires great caution. It is well known that dephasing effects due to water molecule diffusion in a magnetic field gradient can affect transverse relaxation data, even if the smallest experimentally available half echo time τ is used in Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill experiments. When a portable single-sided N…

Eduardo Primo Yúfera, founder of Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos and pioneer on food science and technology research in Spain.

2011

Eduardo Primo Yúfera was the founder and director of the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA, 1957-1974) until he was appointed president of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). His aim to publicize food science led him to create the Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos in 1961, the forerunner of this journal, Food Science and Technology International, which he directed until 1977. Of his scientific output, 50% has been published in this journal. He is considered to be the promoter and exponent of Food Science and Technology and Chemical Ecology in Spain as well as the instigator of the country's innovation model (R&D and innovati…
