Effect of Pulsed Electric Field Pretreatment on Drying Kinetics, Color, and Texture of Parsnip and Carrot.

2018

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment on drying kinetics and on color and textural changes in sliced parsnip and carrot. Cell disintegration index measured in parsnips after PEF pretreatment significantly differed from the ones measured for carrots and, consequently, the reduction of the time needed to dry both samples to a final moisture content up to 5% (wet basis). The drying time of the PEF pretreated parsnip was reduced by up to 28% at 70 °C and by up to 21% at 60 °C in carrot, in comparison to untreated samples. The PEF pretreatment influenced the effective diffusivity of water into the samples going from 50 °C to 70 °C: in carrots…

Bio-predictive tablet disintegration: Effect of water diffusivity, fluid flow, food composition and test conditions

2013

Abstract Food intake may delay tablet disintegration. Current in vitro methods have little predictive potential to account for such effects. The effect of a variety of factors on the disintegration of immediate release tablets in the gastrointestinal tract has been identified. They include viscosity of the media, precipitation of food constituents on the surface of the tablet and reduction of water diffusivity in the media as well as changes in the hydrodynamics in the surrounding media of the solid dosage form. In order to improve the predictability of food affecting the disintegration of a dosage form, tablet disintegration in various types of a liquefied meal has been studied under stati…

Assessing the performance of thermal inertia and Hydrus models to estimate surface soil water content

2017

The knowledge of soil water content (SWC) dynamics in the upper soil layer is important for several hydrological processes. Due to the difficulty of assessing the spatial and temporal SWC dynamics in the field, some model-based approaches have been proposed during the last decade. The main objective of this work was to assess the performance of two approaches to estimate SWC in the upper soil layer under field conditions: the physically-based thermal inertia and the Hydrus model. Their validity was firstly assessed under controlled laboratory conditions. Thermal inertia was firstly validated in laboratory conditions using the transient line heat source (TLHS) method. Then, it was applied in…

Effect of a novel physical pretreatment process on the drying kinetics of seedless grapes

2000

In this paper an alternative physical method for enhancing the drying rate of seedless grapes is proposed. It consists of the superficial abrasion of the grape peel using an inert abrasive material. The effectiveness of this novel process was compared to that of the traditional ethyl oleate dipping process by analysing not only their respective drying times, but also the peel surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the drying kinetics of the above two treatments was reconstructed by using a mathematical model in which the grape pretreatment used was assumed to affect the water diffusivity in the grape peel, but not in the grape pulp. Even though the abrasion method was found to …

Physical pre-treatment of plums (Prunus domestica). Part 1. Modelling the kinetics of drying

2002

An alternative physical method for enhancing the drying rate of plums is proposed. It consists of the superficial abrasion of the plums' peel using an inert abrasive material to remove the cuticular waxy layer, the limiting factor for moisture loss. The physical pre-treatment was compared with a chemical treatment in which the plums were dipped into a solution of ethyl oleate. The drying kinetics of the above samples, including the untreated one, were reconstructed by using a mathematical model. The drying process, carried out at 60 C to reduce the prunes' quality loss, showed the great capability of both pre-treatments to enhance water diffusivity in the plum peel with respect to the untre…

In-plane conductive heat tansfer in solid and porous planar structures

2011

Methods for determining the in-plane thermal diffusivity in a planar sample geometry were developed. These methods were tested and verified by measuring planar metal samples with known thermal properties. The techniques used were based on heating the sample at one edge and recording the evolution of the temperature field in the sample by a thermographic camera. The temperature fields at different times were processed and then fitted by a solution to a heat equation describing the experimental setup, thermal diffusivity as one of the fitting parameters. In the first experimental setup the sample was placed in a weak constant flow of air, and the situation was improved in the second setup by …

Correlation of brain white matter diffusion anisotropy and mean diffusivity with reaction time in an oddball task.

2008

Background: Reaction time (RT) is a frequently used measure of information processing speed, but the underlying physiological and anatomical conditions are not yet fully understood. A correlation between measures of white matter (WM) ultrastructural properties and RT is expected – particularly for those WM tracts that are involved in the attentional system of the brain. Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging data were acquired in 43 unrelated healthy subjects (age: 22.7 ± 1.8 years), and RT was measured during an attention-requiring visual oddball task in the same scanning session. Voxel-by-voxel and region of interest analyses were performed for the large a…

Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging to Evaluate Microstructural Changes and Outcomes after Radiofrequency Rhizotomy of Trigeminal Nerves in Patients with …

2016

Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by facial pain that may be sudden, intense, and recurrent. Our aim was to investigate microstructural tissue changes of the trigeminal nerve in patients with trigeminal neuralgia resulting from neurovascular compression by diffusion tensor imaging, and to test the predictive value of diffusion tensor imaging for determining outcomes after radiofrequency rhizotomy. Forty-three patients with trigeminal neuralgia were recruited, and diffusion tensor imaging was performed before radiofrequency rhizotomy. By selecting the cisternal segment of the trigeminal nerve manually, we measured the volume of trigeminal nerve, fractional anisotropy, apparent diffusion …

Physical activity, aerobic fitness, and brain white matter : Their role for executive functions in adolescence

2020

Highlights • Aerobic fitness level, but not physical activity, is related to white matter properties in the brain. • The relation between physical activity and working memory is moderated by fractional anisotropy (FA) of the corpus callosum. • The FA of the corpus callosum and superior corona radiata moderates the relation between aerobic fitness and working memory.
