Intravenous Contrast Agent in Abdominal CT: Is It Really Needed to Identify the Cause of Bowel Obstruction? Proof of Concept
2019
Background. To compare sensitivity of unenhanced computed tomography (CT) and contrast-enhanced CT for the identification of the etiology of bowel obstruction.Materials and Methods. We retrospectively evaluated abdominal CT scans of patients operated for bowel obstruction from March 2013 to October 2017. Two radiologists evaluated CT scans before and after contrast agent in two reading sessions. Then, we calculated sensitivity of CT in the diagnosis of bowel obstruction and determined in which cases the etiology of bowel obstruction was detected on both unenhanced and enhanced CT or on enhanced CT only. The reference standard was defined as the final diagnosis obtained after surgery. Results…
Gastric cancer in autoimmune gastritis: A case-control study from the German centers of the staR project on gastric cancer research
2020
Objectives Patients with autoimmune gastritis (AIG) are reported to have an increased risk of developing gastric cancer (GC). In this study, we assess the characteristics and outcomes of GC patients with AIG in a multicenter case-control study. Methods Between April 2013 and May 2017, patients with GC, including cancers of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) Siewert type II and III, were recruited. Patients with histological characteristics of AIG were identified and matched in a 1:2 fashion for age and gender to GC patients with no AIG. Presenting symptoms were documented using a self-administered questionnaire. Results Histological assessment of gastric mucosa was available for 572/759 GC …
A new method to valued efficiency of enzyme blend for pancreas tissue digestion.
2009
One of the best successful example of cell therapy is represented by islet transplantation since the '90. However islet isolation methods are not completely standardized yet. More than half of isolation procedures failed to isolate adequate islets for transplantation, due to variable pancreas condition, and to unpredictable enzymatic blend efficiency. Enzymes used for pancreas digestion are purified from Clostridium histolyticum; these enzymes has a broad substrate specificity and potent collagenolytic activity compared to vertebrate collagenases. However, a major obstacle in human islet isolation successful is due to the variability in composition and concentration of the collagenases used…
The prohibition of commentaries to the Digest and the antecessorial literature
2014
A physiologically active interpenetrating collagen network that supports growth and migration of epidermal keratinocytes: zinc-polyP nanoparticles in…
2020
The distinguished property of the physiological polymer, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), is to act as a bio-intelligent material which releases stimulus-dependent metabolic energy to accelerate wound healing. This characteristic is based on the bio-imitating feature of polyP to be converted, upon exposure to peptide-containing body fluids, from stable amorphous nanoparticles to a physiologically active and energy-delivering coacervate phase. This property of polyP has been utilized to fabricate a wound mat consisting of compressed collagen supplemented with amorphous polyP particles, formed from the inorganic polyanion with an over-stoichiometric ratio of zinc ions. The proliferation and t…
An integrated humoral and cellular response is elicited in pancreatic cancer by alpha-enolase, a novel pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma-associated an…
2009
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a fatal disease with a very poor 5-year survival rate. alpha-Enolase is a glycolytic enzyme that also acts as a surface plasminogen receptor. We find that it is overexpressed in PDAC and present on the cell surface of PDAC cell lines. The clinical correlation of its expression with tumor status has been reported for lung and hepatocellular carcinoma. We have previously demonstrated that sera from PDAC patients contain IgG autoantibodies to alpha-enolase. The present work was intended to assess the ability of alpha-enolase to induce antigen-specific T cell responses. We show that alpha-enolase-pulsed dendritic cells (DC) specifically stimulate healt…

Colonic drug delivery: influence of cross-linking agent on pectin beads properties and role of the shell capsule type.
2006
For colonic delivery, pectin beads obtained by ionotropic gelation method have been already reported as an interesting approach. This study investigated the influence of the cross-linking agent (calcium or zinc) and the type of shell capsule used (classical or enteric capsules) on pectin beads properties and on their performance to target the colon (in vitro dissolution studies with subsequent pH change to mimic overall gastro-intestinal tract). Zinc pectinate beads seemed to be relatively similar to calcium's ones in morphological point, except on the surface aspect. When beads were introduced in classical hard capsules, ketoprofen release was not significantly different between CPG and ZP…
Sugar profiles of Spanish unifloral honeys
1997
The levels of various sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, maltulose, kojibiose, isomaltose, raffinose, erlose and melezitose) as well as the glucose/fructose and glucose/water ratios were determined in different Spanish unifloral honey types (rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, sunflower, eucalyptus, heather, honeydew). Sugars were determined by gas chromatography of the trimethylsilyloxime derivatives. There were significant differences among the honey types in relation to sugar composition. Fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose and the glucose/water ratio were selected by discriminant analysis as the better parameters for the correct classification of the honey samples into their p…
Preference and acceptability of partially dealcoholized white and red wines by consumers and professionals
2010
International audience; The influence of partial alcohol reduction in wine on consumer appreciation and acceptability was investigated. Two white wines (Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc) and two red wines (Merlot and Syrah) were partially dealcoholized using reverse osmosis to span a range of three different alcohol contents (14% to 10%) by grape variety. A group of 79 French wine consumers comparatively rated their appreciation of these wines, first in blind tasting conditions and then with added information. A group of 35 French wine professionals also comparatively rated their appreciation of the same wines in blind conditions and described them by rating the intensity of 10 informal descr…
