Optimizing diagnostic algorithms to advance Hepatitis C elimination in Italy: A cost effectiveness evaluation

Objectives: Optimized diagnostic algorithms to detect active infections are crucial to achieving HCV elimination. We evaluated the cost effectiveness and sustainability of different algorithms for HCV active infection diagnosis, in a context of a high endemic country for HCV infection. Methods: A Markov disease progression model, simulating six diagnostic algorithms in the birth cohort 1969‐1989 over a 10‐year horizon from a healthcare perspective was used. HAV infection in chronic liver disease: a rationale for vaccination.

We report the conduct and results of a systematic search of the literature to assess whether exposure to HAV could induce a fatal deterioration of liver diseases. We assessed 30 studies and found evidence of progressive decrease of natural immunity against HAV in Italy. HAV vaccine seems as safe in chronic liver diseases than in general population. On the basis of the evidence we recommend that subjects with chronic liver disease should be vaccinated against HAV, especially if younger than 40 years.

Abstract Enzymes of several classes used in the formulations of cleaning products were characterized by trypsin digestion followed by HPLC with UV detection. A polymeric monolithic column (ProSwift) was used to optimize the separation of both the intact enzymes and their tryptic digests. This column was adequate for the quality control of raw industrial enzyme concentrates. Then, monolithic and microparticulate columns were compared for peptide analysis. Gastric evacuation rate of burbot fed single-fish meals at different temperatures

The gastric evacuation rates of burbot Lota lota, fed a single meal of vendace, Coregonus albula, were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (1·3, 2·6, 4·8, 9·4 and 12·6° C). Gastric evacuation rate increased exponentially with increasing temperatrure, but the results suggest that gastric evacuation rates of burbot at low temperatures are lower than those of other freshwater fish species. Temperature and the ratio of meal weight to burbot weight were the most important factors affecting gastric evacuation rate. There was no significant difference in gastric evacuation rate between three different prey species: vendace, perch Perca fluviatilis, and smelt Osmerus eperlanus.
Diet composition and seasonal feeding patterns of a freshwater ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis)

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the few freshwater seal populations worldwide. The major conservation issue of this critically endangered population is bycatch mortality. We used digestive tract content and stable isotopes (d 13 Ca ndd 15 N) to estimate the diet and seasonal feeding patterns for gaining better understanding of the seals feeding habits and potential conservation implications. The diet was similar across age groups. Altogether 15 fish species were identified and the most important were smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), vendace (Coregonus albula )a nd cyprinids.
