Background In sera from patients with autoimmune liver diseases, e.g. primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and autoimmune hepatitis, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) can be found. Until now, no animal model of ANCA induction in liver disease has been described. In this study, we describe a novel rat model of acute liver injury and subsequent ANCA production. The asialoglycoprotein receptor mediates hepatic binding and uptake of natural hepatitis B virus particles derived from viraemic carriers.

As a putative mechanism of hepatitis B virus (HBV) uptake into hepatocytes the interaction between HBV and the hepatic, human-derived asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) was investigated. Sera from patients with different variations of hepatitis B surface antigen-(HBsAg) positive chronic hepatitis, HBV particles isolated from HBV carriers with high-titre viraemia and commercial HBsAg served as sources of HBV. γ-Glutamyl transpeptidase overexpression increases metastatic growth of B16 melanoma cells in the mouse liver

B16 melanoma (B16M) cells with high glutathione (GSH) content show rapid proliferation in vitro and high metastatic activity in the liver in vivo. gamma-Glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT)-mediated extracellular GSH cleavage and intracellular GSH synthesis were studied in vitro in B16M cells with high (F10) and low (F1) metastatic potential. GGT activity was modified by transfection with the human GGT gene (B16MF1/Tet-GGT cells) or by acivicin-induced inhibition. Persistent infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. All treatments known so far rely on the antiviral activity of interferon alfa (IFN-alpha) that is given alone or in combination with ribavirin. Epigenetic regulation of methionine adenosyltransferase 1A: a role for MicroRNA-based treatment in liver cancer?

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and methionine adenosyltransferase 1A (MAT1A) are dysregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and reduced MAT1A expression correlates with worse HCC prognosis. Expression of miR-664, miR-485-3p, and miR-495, potential regulatory miRNAs of MAT1A, is increased in HCC. Knockdown of these miRNAs individually in Hep3B and HepG2 cells induced MAT1A expression, reduced growth, and increased apoptosis, while combined knockdown exerted additional effects on all parameters.
