Reconfigurable digital instrumentation based on FPGA

2004

A novel application of FPGA to realize digital test equipment is proposed. It takes advantage of the dynamic reconfigurability of FPGAs so easily tailoring custom test functions in the same instrument. This results in high effective, compact and low cost instruments.

Range image binarization: applications to wooden stamps analysis

2003

This paper deals with the analysis of ancient wooden stamps. The aim is to extract a binary image from the stamp. This image must be the closer to the image produced by inking and using a printing press with the stamps. A range image based method is proposed to extract a stamped image from the stamps. The range image acquisition from a 3D laser scanner is presented. Pre-filtering for range image enhancement is detailed. The range image binarization method is based on an adaptive thresholding. Few simple processes applied on the range image enable a final binarized image computing. The proposed method provides here a very efficient way to perform "virtual" stampings with ancient wooden stamp…

Introductory notes for the Acta IMEKO Special Issue on the 24th IMEKO Technical Committee 4 International Symposium and the 22nd International Worksh…

2021

Measurement has always been a tool by which we can observe the world around us. This concept was once again confirmed during the 24th IMEKO Technical Committee 4 (TC4) International Symposium, which showed how topics related to the world of measurement range across many fields of knowledge. The IMEKO TC4 International Symposium is one of the most important events in the fields concerned with the theoretical and practical aspects of the measurement of electrical quantities and related instrumentation. It involves institutions and academia in a discussion of the state of the art and issues that require a joint approach by engineers, academics and other experts of measurement, instrumentation,…

Computer active control of damping fluid of a racing superbike suspension scheme for road safety improvement spin-off

2008

This paper describes in detail a computational investigation of a newly-conceived scheme of hydraulic active racing motorcycle suspension and its design application based on a computer-aided control of damping fluid. Through ad hoc tests on a full-scale model setup and the theoretical approach of a non linear 8th-order suspension scheme, this study gives enhancement of the damping fluid active control on the feedback branch of the entire control system for significant improvement of the suspension response to typical road inputs. Briefly, the fluid flow in suspension dampers - generated through well-suited high-pressure hydraulic circuit - shall be conveniently controlled in direction and m…

Multimodal user interface for a semi-robotic visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery

2005

Abstract We developed a visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery, consisting of a stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) mounted on a semi-robotic manipulator. In order to minimize the operation time, the application-specific multimodal user interface enables hands-free manipulation of the exoscope. The surgeon wears thereby a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different modes of view positioning and adjustment can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button mounted on a finger ring or suction device. Apart from the development of the mechatronic and software modules of…

Effect of Motion Artifact on Digital Camera Based Heart Rate Measurement

2017

International audience; Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, burdening many people world-wide. A system with the potential of serving as a decision support system is proposed, based on novel features extracted from facial expression geometry and speech, by interpreting non-verbal manifestations of depression. The proposed system has been tested both in gender independent and gender based modes, and with different fusion methods. The algorithms were evaluated for several combinations of parameters and classification schemes, on the dataset provided by the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge of 2013 and 2014. The proposed framework achieved a precision of 94.8% for detecting p…

An automatic quality system for injection molding

2007

This paper describes a fully automatic quality system for injection molding. The proposed system includes an on-line measurement platform with a digital camera, a methodology for adaptive design of experiments (DOE), statistical modeling, process monitoring, and a closed loop process control. The system has been tested in the manufacturing of plastic parts for mobile phones.

A Memetic Differential Evolution in Filter Design for Defect Detection in Paper Production

2007

This article proposes a Memetic Differential Evolution (MDE) for designing digital filters which aim at detecting defects of the paper produced during an industrial process. The MDE is an adaptive evolutionary algorithm which combines the powerful explorative features of Differential Evolution (DE) with the exploitative features of two local searchers. The local searchers are adaptively activated by means of a novel control parameter which measures fitness diversity within the population. Numerical results show that the DE framework is efficient for the class of problems under study and employment of exploitative local searchers is helpful in supporting the DE explorative mechanism in avoid…

Towards roll-to-roll fabrication of electronics, optics and optoelectronics for smart and intelligent packaging

2004

Embedding of optoelectrical, optical, and electrical functionalities into low-cost products like packages and printed matter can be used to increase their information content. These functionalities make also possible the realization of new type of entertaining, impressive or guiding effects on the product packages and printed matter. For these purposes, components like displays, photodetectors, light sources, solar cells, battery elements, diffractive optical elements, lightguides, electrical conductors, resistors, transistors, switching elements etc. and their integration to functional modules are required. Additionally, the price of the components for low-end products has to be in cent sc…

Exploring FPGA‐Based Lock‐In Techniques for Brain  Monitoring Applications

2017

Functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) systems for e‐health applications usually suffer from poor signal detection, mainly due to a low end‐to‐end signal‐to‐noise ratio of the electronics chain. Lock‐in amplifiers (LIA) historically represent a powerful technique helping to improve performance in such circumstances. In this work a digital LIA system, based on a Zynq® field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been designed and implemented, in an attempt to explore if this technique might improve fNIRS system performance. More broadly, FPGA‐based solution flexibility has been investigated, with particular emphasis applied to digital filter parameters, needed in the digital LIA, and its …
