The role of the dilaton in dense skyrmion matter
2008
In this note, we report on a remarkable and surprising interplay between the omega meson and the dilaton chi in the structure of a single skyrmion as well as in the phase structure of dense skyrmion matter which may have a potentially important consequence on the properties of compact stars. In our continuing effort to understand hadronic matter at high density, we have developed a unified field theoretic formalism for dense skyrmion matter using a single Lagrangian to describe simultaneously both matter and meson fluctuations and studied in-medium properties of hadrons. The effective theory used is the Skyrme model Lagrangian gauged with the vector mesons rho and omega, implemented with th…
Canonical equivalence of a generic 2-D dilaton gravity model and a free field
1997
We show that a canonical transformation converts, up to a boundary term, a generic 2-D dilaton gravity model into a free field theory with a Minkowskian target space.
Natural stabilization of the Higgs boson’s mass and alignment
2019
Current data from the LHC indicate that the 125 GeV Higgs boson, $H$, is either the single Higgs of the Standard Model or, to a good approximation, an "aligned Higgs". We propose that $H$ is the pseudo-Goldstone dilaton of Gildener and Weinberg. Models based on their mechanism of scale symmetry breaking can naturally account for the Higgs boson's low mass and aligned couplings. We conjecture that they are the only way to achieve a "Higgslike dilaton" that is actually the Higgs boson. These models further imply the existence of additional Higgs bosons in the vicinity of 200 to about 550 GeV. We illustrate our proposal in a version of the two-Higgs-doublet model of Lee and Pilaftsis. Our vers…
NON-PERTURBATIVE VACUUM WAVE-FUNCTIONAL AND CLOSED STRING EQUATIONS OF MOTION
1989
The anomalous conformal dependence of the vacuum wave-functional is studied in the non-perturbative regime of the closed bosonic string theory. It is shown that the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor trace leads to the implementation of a suitable variational condition on the wave-functional, provided that the dilaton condensate be taken as a conformal compensator for the graviton condensate of the embedding space.
Free Fields for Chiral 2D Dilaton Gravity
1998
We give an explicit canonical transformation which transforms a generic chiral 2D dilaton gravity model into a free field theory.
Unified Approach to Dense Matter
2004
We apply the Skyrme model to dense hadronic matter, which provides a unified approach to high density, valid in the large Nc limit. In our picture, dense hadronic matter is described by the classical soliton configuration with minimum energy for the given baryon number density. By incorporating the meson fluctuations on such ground state we obtain an effective Lagrangian for meson dynamics in a dense medium. Our starting point has been the Skyrme model defined in terms of pions, thereafter we have extended and improved the model by incorporating other degrees of freedom such as dilaton, kaons and vector mesons.
Integrable models and degenerate horizons in two-dimensional gravity
1999
We analyse an integrable model of two-dimensional gravity which can be reduced to a pair of Liouville fields in conformal gauge. Its general solution represents a pair of ``mirror'' black holes with the same temperature. The ground state is a degenerate constant dilaton configuration similar to the Nariai solution of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter case. The existence of $\phi=const.$ solutions and their relation with the solution given by the 2D Birkhoff's theorem is then investigated in a more general context. We also point out some interesting features of the semiclassical theory of our model and the similarity with the behaviour of AdS$_2$ black holes.
Non-equivariant cylindrical contact homology
2013
It was pointed out by Eliashberg in his ICM 2006 plenary talk that the integrable systems of rational Gromov-Witten theory very naturally appear in the rich algebraic formalism of symplectic field theory (SFT). Carefully generalizing the definition of gravitational descendants from Gromov-Witten theory to SFT, one can assign to every contact manifold a Hamiltonian system with symmetries on SFT homology and the question of its integrability arises. While we have shown how the well-known string, dilaton and divisor equations translate from Gromov-Witten theory to SFT, the next step is to show how genus-zero topological recursion translates to SFT. Compatible with the example of SFT of closed …
One-loop effective action for a generic 2d dilaton gravity theory
1997
We study the one-loop effective action for a generic two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory conformally coupled to $N$ matter fields. We obtain an explicit expression for the effective action in the weak-coupling limit under a suitable restriction of the dilaton potential asymptotics. Our result applies to the CGHS model as well as to the spherically symmetric general relativity. The effective action is obtained by using the background-field method, and we take into account the loop contributions from all the fields in the classical action and from the ghosts. In the large-$N$ limit, and after an appropriate field redefinition, the one-loop correction takes the form of the Polyakov-Liouvill…
Spin-dependence of gravity-mediated dark matter in warped extra-dimensions
2021
We study the spin-dependence of Dark Matter (DM) particles which interact gravitationally with the Standard Model (SM) in an extra-dimensional Randall-Sundrum scenario. We assume that both the Dark Matter and the Standard Model are confined to the TeV (Infra-red) brane and only interact via gravitational mediators, namely Kaluza-Klein gravitons and the radion. We analyze the different DM annihilation channels and find that it is possible to achieve the presently observed relic abundance of Dark Matter, $\Omega_{\rm DM}$, within the freeze-out mechanism for DM particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1. We study the region of the model parameter space for which $\Omega_{\rm DM}$ is achieved and compare …
