Warm white LED light by frequency down-conversion of mixed yellow and red Lumogen®

2013

This work reports on the benefits and promising opportunities offered by white LED hybrid technology, based on a mixing perylene-based dyes in order to obtain a warm white light for frequency-down conversion. In a standard Ce:YAG-based white LED, the white light appears cold due to the weakness of red wavelength components in the emission spectrum. In order to obtain a warmer white, one possible solution is to add a red phosphor to the yellow one to move the chromatic coordinates properly, though the luminous efficiency drastically decreases due to the increased light absorption of the coating layer. It is generally believed that the low efficiency of warm white LEDs is the main issue today…

300°C SiC Blocking Diodes for Solar Array Strings

2009

Silicon Carbide 300V-5A Ni and W Schottky diodes with high temperature operation capability (up to 300°C) have been fabricated. This paper reports on the stability tests (ESA space mission to Mercury, BepiColombo requirements) performed on these diodes. A DC current stress of 5A has been applied to these diodes at 270°C for 800 hours. These reliability tests revealed both, degradation at the Schottky interface (forward voltage drift) and at the diode top surface due to Aluminum diffusion (bond pull strength degradation). The use of W as Schottky metal allows eliminating the forward voltage drift producing stable metal–semiconductor interface properties. Nevertheless, SEM observations of the…

Buildup and structure of theInSe∕Ptinterface studied by angle-resolved photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

2006

The atomic structure and the electronic nature of the $\mathrm{In}\mathrm{Se}∕\mathrm{Pt}$ interface have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission, respectively. By these measurements, it has been found that Pt atoms equally incorporate into two trigonal-prismatic intralayer positions existing within the InSe layer, although, at low Pt coverage, Pt atoms seem to prefer one of these sites, where they have a lower interaction with Se atoms. The atomic structure of the $\mathrm{In}\mathrm{Se}∕\mathrm{Pt}$ interface appears to determine its electronic behavior as Pt deposition increases. At initial stages of Pt diffusion, isolated Pt atoms act as a surface …

Time-dependent current-voltage characteristics of Al/p-CdTe/Pt x-ray detectors

2012

Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detectors were investigated in dark and at different temperatures. CdTe detectors with Al rectifying contacts, very appealing for high resolution x-ray and gamma ray spectroscopy, suffer from bias-induced polarization phenomena which cause current increasing with the time and severe worsening of the spectroscopic performance. In this work, we studied the time-dependence of the I-V characteristics of the detectors, both in reverse and forward bias, taking into account the polarization effects. The I-V measurements, performed at different time intervals between the application of the bias voltage and the measurement of the current…

Highly Efficient Holmium-Doped All-Fiber ∼2.07-μm Laser Pumped by Ytterbium-Doped Fiber Laser at ∼1.13 μm

2018

We report a 2.07-μm Holmium-doped all-fiber laser (HDFL) pumped by a 1.13-μm Ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL). Home-made alumino–germano–silicate holmium-doped fiber (HDF) served here as an active medium, optimized in terms of chemical composition and co-dopants’ concentrations. Laser action at 2.07 μm was assessed in simple Fabry–Perot cavity, formed by a couple of home-made fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), inscribed directly in the HDF; this allowed notable diminishing of intracavity loss of the 2.07-μm laser. HDF was in-core pumped by the 1.13-μm double-clad YDFL with a power of ∼12.5 W, in turn pumped in-clad by a laser diode (LD) operated at 0.97 μm with ∼24.5-W output. Using optimal len…

Application of WGM Resonances to the Measurement of the Temperature Increment of Ho and Ho-Yb Doped Optical Fibers Pumped at 1125 and 975 nm

2021

Optical fiber characterization using whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself has been demonstrated to be a powerful technique. In this work, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances to characterize the pump-induced temperature increment in holmium doped and holmium-ytterbium codoped optical fibers. The technique relies on the measurement of the resonances’ wavelength shift due to temperature variation as a function of the pump power. Holmium doped fibers were pumped to the second excited level 5I6 of the Ho3+ ion using a laser diode at 1125 nm and ytterbium-holmium codoped fibers to the 2F5/2 level of the Yb3+ ion by a laser diode at 975 nm. Ou…

Chemical Bath Deposition as a Simple Way to Grow Isolated and Coalesced ZnO Nanorods for Light-Emitting Diodes Fabrication

2018

A way to grow and characterize isolated and coalesced ZnO nanorods on $p$ -GaN/sapphire structure is presented. Chemical bath deposition can be used to grow ZnO nanorods of device-quality, simply controlling the duration time of the growth process and the concentration of the nutrient solution in the bath. Increasing the duration of the process, as well as the concentration of the solution, leads to compact and sound layers instead of separated nanorods. However, too high concentrations stop the growth process. Light-emitting diodes fabricated on these ZnO-p-GaN heterostructure have a peak of electroluminescence at 400 nm and exhibit interesting electrical and optical properties. Optical po…

Passively mode-locked laser based on an ultra-large dispersion Yb-doped fiber

2013

Summary form only given. We report on the first realization of a passively mode-locked oscillator featuring an ultra-large dispersion Yb-doped Bragg fiber. The gain medium is a double-clad Bragg fiber featuring a 20 μm Yb-doped core surrounded by a 120 μm inner cladding [1]. The 2 m long gain fiber is cladding-pumped with a fiber-coupled laser diode emitting at 976 nm. Passive mode locking is achieved by the combined actions of nonlinear polarization evolution and a SESAM. Mode-locking is initiated by optimizing the saturation criteria on the saturable absorber mirror using an adequate focusing lens. The emission wavelength of the oscillator is controlled using a passive spectral filter int…

Pulse timing effects in bulk Er/Yb codoped diode-pumped eyesafe lasers

2007

In this work, diode-pumping with appropriately modulated pulses is used to expose subtle input / output pulse-timing characteristics of Er3+ /Yb3+ systems, study their relation to laser efficiency and demonstrate some unique laser-pulse timing behavior. Er+3/Yb+3 codoped glass and YAG laser-host materials with similar concentrations (optimized for eyesafe emission in the 1.6-mum region) were studied in the same diode-pumped setup, in similar resonator configurations and analogous operating conditions.
