European reference values for the quality of life questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30: Results of a German investigation and a summarizing analysis of six Eu…

2014

The aims of this study are to present the results of a new general population normative study of the quality of life questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30 and to give European reference values averaged across six studies. The empirical study was based on a representative sample of the German adult population (N = 2448). The subjects were asked to fill in several questionnaires, one of them being the EORTC QLQ-C30.EORTC QLQ-C30 mean scores of this sample indicated slightly better quality of life (QoL) than in previous European studies. QoL decreased with age, but there were only small gender differences. The mean scores were compared with the age and gender adjusted scores of five other European normat…

Long-term Evolution of Hepatocellular Adenomas at MRI Follow-up.

2020

Background Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are rare benign liver tumors. Guidelines recommend continued surveillance of patients diagnosed with HCAs, but these guidelines are mainly based on small studies or expert opinion. Purpose To analyze the long-term evolution of HCAs, including solitary and multiple lesions, and to identify predictive features of progression with MRI. Materials and Methods In a retrospective study, patients diagnosed with pathologically proven solitary or multiple HCAs between January 2004 and December 2015 were included; β-catenin-mutated HCAs and HCAs with foci of malignancy were considered to be at risk for progression. MRI examinations were analyzed, and tumor evo…

Monosymptomatic presentation of type I Arnold-Chiari malformation: report of two cases.

1994

Two cases of type I ACM are described, one of which presented with dizziness in late childhood (case 1), the other with mild intention tremor in adulthood (case 2). Cerebellar ectopia should be considered in monosymptomatic patients even in the absence of other symptoms and signs of C.N.S. dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging of the craniocervical junction should be performed because it may be diagnostic for type I ACM.

Pancreatic encephalopathy: a 7-year follow-up case report and review of the literature

2003

Pancreatic encephalopathy is a rare complication of acute pancreatitis. Clinical features include focal neurological signs and acute onset of dementia. This picture can fluctuate over time: cyclic progression with remission and relapses has been described. We present the case of a 43-year-old man who, after an acute episode of pancreatitis, experienced five relapses, with alternating focal signs. The patient has improved, but cognitive impairment persists after a 7-year follow-up.

Latvian registry of familial hypercholesterolemia: The first report of three-year results.

2018

Abstract Background and aims Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) was rarely diagnosed in Latvia before 2015, when the Latvian Registry of FH (LRFH) was established. Here, we report the first experience of the LRFH over three years (2015–2017). Methods The LRFH is an ongoing nationwide, dynamic, long-term prospective cohort. The diagnosis of FH was assessed using the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) criteria. Cascade screening of first-degree relatives using age- and sex-specific percentiles of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was performed in relatives of patients with definite and probable FH. Results Among the 416 individuals included in the LRFH, 181 patients were diagnosed wi…

Clinical inertia in diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in primary care: Quantification and associated factors

2009

The objective of the present study was to quantify both diagnostic and therapeutic inertia in hypertension and to identify patient-associated variables.Cross-sectional, multicenter study of 35 424 subjects carried out in 428 health centers and/or primary care clinics in the Valencian Community, Spain, in a preventive activity conducted during 2003 and 2004. Diagnostic inertia was identified when a patient without known hypertension had high blood pressure (BP) but was labeled "normal" by the medical staff, and therapeutic inertia when treatment was not modified for a hypertensive patient on the presence of high BP values. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed to ide…

Diffusion-weighted MRI of the lung with hyperpolarized helium-3: A study of reproducibility

2005

Purpose To determine the reproducibility of several parameters of the ADC measurement by calculating the scan-to-scan intrasubject variability. Materials and Methods Measurements were performed using a gradient-echo sequence with a bipolar gradient for diffusion weighting (b = 3.89 sec/cm2). Five patients with pulmonary emphysema, and six healthy-lung volunteers were included in the study. Images were acquired after inspiration of 3He during a single inspiratory breath-hold. To assess the reproducibility, the measurement was performed twice (time between measurements = 20 minutes) without repositioning the subjects. Analysis was performed on the basis of region-of-interest (ROI) analysis an…

Agreement in Asthmatics' Perception of Dyspnea During Acute and Chronic Obstruction

2005

Objective Three types of asthmatic patients can be identified during periods of clinical stability: “poor perceivers,” “normal perceivers,” and “over perceivers.” When asthmatics undergo bronchial challenge in the laboratory, the same distinctions in type of perception can be observed. The aim of the present study was to determine the level of agreement between the 2 situations. Patients and methods A total of 93 patients with persistent moderate asthma (36 men and 57 women; mean age 40 years) were studied. We asked them to assess their dyspnea on a modified Borg scale when stable and after each histamine dose in a bronchial provocation test. When a patient's Borg scale assessment in stable…

A Confirmatory Study on the Mechanisms Behind Reduced P300 Waves in Depression

2003

A single-trial analysis of event-related potentials (P300) of 21 depressives was performed in comparison with matched controls. The purpose was to confirm previous results revealing an overall reduction of the single-trial P300 amplitude in depression despite fewer elicited single-trial P300 waves in schizophrenics. The result of the present study is in line with our previous investigation implicating a general reduced P300 amplitude on single trials of depressive patients. Therefore, it appears possible to differentiate depressives and schizophrenics by measuring event-related potentials and applying a single-trial analysis of them.
