This essay discusses the topic of fraud linked to the prizes taken by corsairs in the Mediterranean during the period of the Continental Blockade, from the view- point of the Kingdom of Sicily, where the Bourbon court was sheltering under the English protectorate. The Tribunale delle prede (1808-1813) judged the legitimacy of the prizes taken by armed Sicilian corsair vessels from ships flying enemy or neutral flags, in a complex juridical framework which also involved the Health and Police authorities, at a time when in the rest of Europe similar institutions were being created. Nei discorsi riportati da Tito Livio riguardanti gli scambi diplomatici succedutisi nel corso della seconda guerra punica, il concetto di ius che regola le relazioni fra forze in gioco è ampiamente utilizzato come motivo argomentativo; l’obiettivo dello storico è quello di difendere i comandanti romani, nei casi in cui ne era messa in dubbio la correttezza da un’opinione pubblica avversa, e strumentalmente manipolata a livello interno dagli avversari politici. In particolare l'analisi è rivolta all’impiego di un lessico che rinvia alla sfera del ius e del mos, nelle sue diverse declinazioni, quale strumento di riflessione sull'imperialismo romano.

The essay investigates the marriage diplomacy of Chiaromonte family by a detailed analysis of their ties with Ventimiglia and Palizzi, in the context of their relations with the kings of Sicily, the Angevins, the Aragonese, and the papacy. We deduce that the marriage strategies of comital families influenced the island’s politics. The genealogical construction rooted families in the past, so preserving the good reputation of the ancestors was essential. In their reports, they tried to provide as much information as possible, not only political but also moral, social, and related to the ceremony. The construction of certain country images and identities is traditionally studied in relation to public diplomacy, strategic communication and nation branding practices of state and non-state actors. However, we notice the increased instrumentalization of country images and identities in debates on issues beyond strategic promotional practices, such as those articulated around elections, referendums or migration.
