Identifying gene-environment interactions in schizophrenia: contemporary challenges for integrated, large-scale investigations
2014
European Community Recent years have seen considerable progress in epidemiological and molecular genetic research into environmental and genetic factors in schizophrenia, but methodological uncertainties remain with regard to validating environmental exposures, and the population risk conferred by individual molecular genetic variants is small. There are now also a limited number of studies that have investigated molecular genetic candidate gene-environment interactions (G x E), however, so far, thorough replication of findings is rare and G x E research still faces several conceptual and methodological challenges. in this article, we aim to review these recent developments and illustrate h…
Occurrence of priority pollutants in WWTP effluents and Mediterranean coastal waters of Spain
2011
A comprehensive study aimed at evaluating the occurrence, significance of concentrations and spatial distribution of priority pollutants (PPs) along the Comunidad Valenciana coastal waters (Spain) was carried out in order to fulfil the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). Additionally, PP concentrations were also analysed in the effluent of 28 WWTPs distributed along the studied area. In coastal waters 36 organic pollutants of the 71 analysed, including 26 PPs were detected although many of them with low frequency of occurrence. Only 13 compounds, which belong to four different classes (VOCs, organochlorinated pesticides, phthalates and tributyltin compounds (TBT)) showed a frequency o…
Consumer protection in cases of unfair commercial practices, misleading advertisements, and defective products
2022
Consumer protection has always been an important element in the laws of every country and for good reason, because consumers bring profit, and this improves the economic situation of the country. But the excessive desire to dominate the market led to bad business practices, along with misleading advertisements and defective products. To keep consumers safe and protected, new laws have been formed to protect consumers and their economic well-being. The creation of the directive of uniform legislation for the European Union influenced the fact that national legislation had to be close to uniform requirements, however, weaker consumer protection than in the directive is prohibited. In connecti…

Micromechanisms of load transfer in a unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy composite due to fibre failures: Part 3. Multiscale reconstruction…
2008
International audience; This third article describes a multiscale process which takes into account the most important microscopic phenomena associated with composite degradation, including fibre fractures and interfacial debonding, overloading of fibres neighbouring a fibre break as well as viscoelastic behaviour of the matrix. The results have been used to accurately predict the macroscopic failure of unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy and quantify damage accumulation in pressure vessels made of the same material. The approach described has allowed the acoustic emission activity resulting from fibres breaks to be evaluated and shown how the residual lifetimes of such vessels, whe…
Evaluation of the effects of different groove length and thickness of the retainers on the retention of maxillary anterior base metal resin bonded re…
2012
Objectives: The resin-bonded fixed partial dentures have gained immense popularity in recent years as they are more conservative, esthetic, economic and easily fabricated. However debonding is considered the most common cause of failure of resin bonded prosthesis. The objective of the study were to compare the effects of different groove lengths and thickness of retainers on retention of maxillary anterior base metal resin bonded retainers. Study Design: Twenty five metal dies of maxillary central incisor duplicated from pure typhodont teeth (maxillary left central incisors) prepared to receive retainer for resin bonded fixed partial denture having different test designs were made. Five tes…
A sequence element downstream of the yeast HTB1 gene contributes to mRNA 3' processing and cell cycle regulation.
2002
Histone mRNAs accumulate in the S phase and are rapidly degraded as cells progress into the G(2) phase of the cell cycle. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, fusion of the 3' untranslated region and downstream sequences of the yeast histone gene HTB1 to a neomycin phosphotransferase open reading frame is sufficient to confer cell cycle regulation on the resulting chimera gene (neo-HTB1). We have identified a sequence element, designated the distal downstream element (DDE), that influences both the 3'-end cleavage site selection and the cell cycle regulation of the neo-HTB1 mRNA. Mutations in the DDE, which is located approximately 110 nucleotides downstream of the HTB1 gene, lead to a delay in the…
Interbasin Water Transfers in Spain: Interregional Conflicts and Governance Responses
2014
Semiarid and drought-prone Spain has managed to meet ever-increasing water demands for more than 50 years through the construction of publicly funded hydraulic infrastructure. Interbasin water transfers are the most expensive and complex supply-side tool used. They are also the most controversial, often associated with such unintended consequences as deteriorating freshwater ecosystems, disappearing recreational opportunities provided by aquatic ecosystems, and the loss of development opportunities for downstream communities. This situation has become increasingly unstable over the past decade due to the scarcity of new supply augmentation alternatives, political changes involving European …
A study of language effects on inward FDI flows in Southeast Asia
2019
Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2019 This master thesis explores how language might affectthe yearly flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) towards five Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. This is aresearch area that has been quite unexplored, and we find it interesting to put forward some hypotheses to observe if there exist such effects or not. By using multiple regression analysison a relevant dataset, three main hypothesesare tested:•Countries in which a global language holds an official status will contribute more FDI than other countries.•Countries that share a global language with a FDI recipient co…
