Direct photon production in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV
2016
Direct photon production at mid-rapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV was studied in the transverse momentum range 0.9 < pT < 14 GeV/c. Photons were detected with the highly segmented electromagnetic calorimeter PHOS and via conversions in the ALICE detector material with the e+e− pair reconstructed in the central tracking system. The results of the two methods were combined and direct photon spectra were measured for the 0–20%, 20–40%, and 40–80% centrality classes. For all three classes, agreement was found with perturbative QCD calculations for pT 5 GeV/c. Direct photon spectra down to pT ≈ 1 GeV/c could be extracted for the 20–40% and 0–20% centrality classes. The significance…
Transcranial direct current stimulation preconditioning modulates the effect of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the hu…
2012
Experimental studies emphasize the importance of homeostatic plasticity as a mean of stabilizing the properties of neural circuits. In the present work we combined two techniques able to produce short-term (5-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, rTMS) and long-term (transcranial direct current stimulation, tDCS) effects on corticospinal excitability to evaluate whether and how the effects of 5-Hz rTMS can be tuned by tDCS preconditioning. Twelve healthy subjects participated in the study. Brief trains of 5-Hz rTMS were applied to the primary motor cortex at an intensity of 120% of the resting motor threshold, with recording of the electromyograph traces evoked by each stimulus o…
Do Cross-Country Differences in Accounting Conservatism Explain Variations in the Degree of Investor Diversification?
2009
We show that the level of conditional accounting conservatism of foreign markets is significantly and positively associated with decisions to diversify portfolios internationally. This positive association could be either because conditional conservatism per se is attractive to international investors, or because the un-modelled factors that attract foreign investors to a country also cause these countries to adopt conditionally conservative accounting practices. However, if conditional conservatism serves to alleviate foreign investors’ concerns related to insiders having asymmetric access to information then one would also expect the chosen mode of entry into a foreign market (as foreign …
Multivariate standardisation for non-linear calibration range in the chemiluminescence determination of chromium.
2006
Multivariate standardisation is proposed for the successful chemiluminescence determination of chromium based on luminol-hydrogen peroxide reaction. In an extended concentration range, non-linear calibration model is needed. The studied instrumental situations were different detection cells, instruments, assemblies, time and their possible combinations. Chemiluminescence kinetic registers have been transferred using piecewise direct standardisation (PDS) method. The optimisation of transfer parameters has been carried out based on the prediction residual error criteria. Non-linear principal component regression (NL-PCR) and non-linear partial least square regression (NL-PLS) were chosen for…
Submicellar and micellar reversed-phase liquid chromatographic modes applied to the separation of beta-blockers.
2009
The behaviour of a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) system (i.e. elution order, resolution and analysis time), used in the analysis of β-blockers with acetonitrile-water mobile phases, changes drastically upon addition of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS). Surfactant monomers cover the alkyl-bonded phase in different extent depending on the concentration of both modifiers, in the ranges 1 × 10-3-0.15 M SDS and 5-50% acetonitrile. Meanwhile, the surfactant is dissolved in the mobile phase as free monomers, associated in small clusters or forming micelles. Four characteristic RPLC modes are yielded, with transition regions between them: hydro-organic, micellar, …
Room temperature acid sonication ICP-MS multielemental analysis of milk
2005
Abstract Room temperature acid sonication of milk samples is proposed as a fast alternative methodology for the determination of the total content of 45 elements (Li, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Y, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, U, Sb, Te, Cs, Ba, Hg, Pb, Bi, Th, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf and Ta) in milk by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The aforementioned procedure involves a 10 min sample pre-treatment. Measurements were made in quantitative and semiquantitative (Totalquant ® ) modes of analysis using Rh as internal standard and Be, Ge, Tb and Re for internal calibration of the equipment in the semiquantitative mode. The…
An approximation to the diachronic analysis of mitigation and face in dialogues between mother and child in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
2018
This paper aims to analyse the evolution of the use of mitigation in dialogues between mother and child and their effects on sociocultural face in the nineteenth and twentieth …

Resistance Training Acutely Impairs Agility and Spike-Specific Performance Measures in Collegiate Female Volleyball Players Returning from the Off-Se…
2020
This study examined the acute effects of resistance training (RT) on volleyball-specific performance. Sixteen female volleyball players undertook their initial, pre-season RT bout. Countermovement jump (CMJ), delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), and sport-specific performances (i.e., run-up jump, agility, and spiking speed and accuracy) were measured before, 24 (T24), and 48 (T48) hours after RT. A significant increase in DOMS was observed at T24 and T48 (~207.6% ±
Novel mutations of the MET proto-oncogene in papillary renal carcinomas.
1999
Hereditary papillary renal carcinoma (HPRC) is characterized by multiple, bilateral papillary renal carcinomas. Previously, we demonstrated missense mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the MET proto-oncogene in HPRC and a subset of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas. In this study, we screened a large panel of sporadic papillary renal carcinomas and various solid tumors for mutations in the MET proto-oncogene. Summarizing these and previous results, mutations of the MET proto-oncogene were detected in 17/129 sporadic papillary renal carcinomas but not in other solid tumors. We detected five novel missense mutations; three of five mutations were located in the ATP-binding region of t…
