Task-related variation in communication of mothers and their sons with learning disability

1995

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether mother-child communication patterns vary as a function of the type of the task. Groups of learning disabled (LD=30) and normally achieving boys (NLD=30) were videotaped interacting with their mothers in two different tasks. The children were matched for age (8 to 11 year-olds) and for parent’s SES. The results indicated that the teaching task differentiated the groups more than did the story task. Academic character of the teaching task increased mothers’ task involvement in both groups. Mothers of the LD group showed, however, significantly more dominance and expressed less emotionality while teaching their child. Mothers’ interaction…

Contribution of benzodiazepines in dental care of patients with special needs.

2019

Background Conscious sedation in dental treatment of patients with special needs (PNEs) has the purpose of controlling events such as anxiety and fear, as well as promoting muscle relaxation and mastery of uncoordinated movements. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are among the most used drugs due to their anxiolytic, hypnotic and sedative properties. The objective of this investigation is to demonstrate a study on the contribution of conscious sedation with BZD in PNEs. Material and Methods The study included 40 PNEs, non-collaborators, submitted to conscious oral sedation with Midazolam (0.5 mg/kg) for dental treatment, receiving vital signs monitoring in the pre, trans and postoperative periods. Oropharyngeal and otorhinological changes in end stage renal patients undergoing hemodialysis

2021

Background The study aimed to assess oropharyngeal and otorhinolaryngological changes in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis and correlate the findings to renal functions. Material and methods This case-control study compared oral and otorhinolaryngological findings in 85 patients with (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis to age and sex matched 85 healthy controls. Frequencies of findings were calculated and compared and correlation between biochemical and the oral health parameters in case group was determined using T-test, chi-square and Pearson correlation test (significance were set at P Results The frequency of oral signs and mucosal symptoms were significantl…

Association between oral findings and laboratory tests in children and adolescents undergoing dialysis: A cross- sectional study

2017

Background Diagnosis of oral complications in the dialysis patients is important to prevent potential infections. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare oral findings in dialysis patients with healthy individuals and determination of the correlation of these findings and laboratory tests. Material and methods In this cross-sectional study, DMFT, dmft, DI , CI , OHIS , PI, GI and enamel defects were evaluated in 25 hemodialysis patients, 30 peritoneal dialysis patients and 26 healthy individuals. Then the correlation of laboratory tests (including Hemoglobin, Urea, Creatinine, Ca, Na, Ph, K and ALP) and oral findings was determined in each groups using SPSS (Version 16). Data a…

Oral Health Scales: Design of an Oral Health Scale of Infectious Potential

2013

Objectives: In this paper we propose a new Global Oral Health Scale that will allow the infectious potential of the oral cavity, clinically manifest as local and focal infections, to be condensed into a single parameter. Study Design: Based on a number of oral health scales previously designed by our group, we designed a final version that incorporates dental and periodontal variables (some of them evaluated using corroborated objective indices) that reflect the presence of caries and periodontal disease. Results: The application of the proposed oral health scale requires the examination of 6 sites per tooth (mesio- buccal, medio-buccal, disto-buccal, disto-lingual, medio-lingual and mesio-…

Role of the dental surgeon in the early detection of adults with underlying HIV infection / AIDS

2011

A review is made of the late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a subject of growing interest in public health. It has been estimated that in Europe 30% of all HIV-infected people are unaware of their seropositive condition, and this in turn is associated with a poorer long-term disease prognosis and an increased risk of transmission to other individuals. The role of the dental surgeon in this context could be of great importance, since there are many oral lesions that can suggest the existence of underlying infection. The study also addresses the controversial subject of rapid HIV testing, and whether these tests should be performed on a routine basis in the dental …

Oral lichen planus and its relationship with systemic diseases. A review of evidence

2018

Background Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common dermatological diseases which are present in the oral cavity. It is a chronic autoimmune, mucocutaneous disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective Review the relevant information to OLP and its relationship with systemic diseases. Material and Methods Searches were carried out in the Medline/PubMed, Lilacs, Bireme, BVS, and SciELO databases by using key-words. After an initial search that provided us with 243 papers, this number was reduced to 78 from the last seven years. One of the first criteria adopted was a selective reading of the abstracts of articles for the elimina…

Vaccination greatly reduces disease, disability, death and inequity worldwide

2007

In low-income countries, infectious diseases still account for a large proportion of deaths, highlighting health inequities largely caused by economic differences. Vaccination can cut health-care costs and reduce these inequities. Disease control, elimination or eradication can save billions of US dollars for communities and countries. Vaccines have lowered the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and will control cervical cancer. Travellers can be protected against "exotic" diseases by appropriate vaccination. Vaccines are considered indispensable against bioterrorism. They can combat resistance to antibiotics in some pathogens. Noncommunicable diseases, such as ischaemic heart disease, c…

A PRISMA-compliant systematic review of the endpoints employed to evaluate symptomatic treatments for primary headaches

2018

Abstract Background Primary headache are prevalent and debilitating disorders. Acute pain cessation is one of the key points in their treatment. Many drugs have been studied but the design of the trials is not usually homogeneous. Efficacy of the trial is determined depending on the selected primary endpoint and usually other different outcomes are measured. We aim to critically appraise which were the employed outcomes through a systematic review. Methods We conducted a systematic review of literature focusing on studies on primary headache evaluating acute relief of pain, following the PRISMA guideline. The study population included patients participating in a controlled study about sympt…
