Enriched cereal bars are more effective in increasing plasma quercetin compared with quercetin from powder-filled hard capsules

The flavonol quercetin, is one of the major flavonoids found in edible plants. The bioavailability of quercetin in humans may be influenced by the food matrix in which it is consumed as well as by its chemical and physical form. The objective of the present study was to investigate the biokinetics of quercetin from quercetin-enriched cereal bars and quercetin powder-filled hard capsules. The Allyl Ester as Carboxy-Protecting Group in the Stereoselective Construction of Neuraminic-Acid Glycosides

The application of the allyl-ester moiety as protecting principle for the carboxy group of N-acetylneuraminic acid is described. Peracetylated allyl neuraminate 2 is synthesized by reacting the caesium salt of the acid 1 with allyl bromide. Treatment of 2 with HCl in AcCl or with HF/pyridine gives the corresponding 2-chloro or 2-fluoro derivatives 3 and 4, respectively (Scheme 1). In the presence of Ag2CO3, the 2-chloro carbohydrate 3 reacts with di-O-isopropylidene-protected galactose 5 to give the 2–6 linked disaccharide with the α-D-anomer 6a predominating (α-D/β-D = 6:1; Scheme 2). Glycosyl azides as building blocks in convergent syntheses of oligomeric lactosamine and Lewisx saccharides

Abstract Oligosaccharides containing type 2 lactosamine repeating units, e.g. neo-lacto-octaose and trimeric Lewis x derivatives, are constructed using neo-lactosamine azide building blocks. The azido group provides a favorable protection of the anomeric position which is stable to versatile protecting group manipulations and glycosylation reactions. International audience; Some β-1,3-glucans and particularly sulfated laminarin (PS3) are known as resistance inducers (RIs) in grapevine against the downy mildew. However, their efficacy in vineyard is still often too low, which might be caused by a limited penetration through the leaf cuticle following spray application. We used (14) C-sucrose uptake experiments with grapevine leaves in order to select a surfactant as saccharide penetration enhancer. Carbohydrate binding specificity and purification by biospecific affinity chromatography of Ascidiamalaca traust. Hemagglutinins

The carbohydrate specificities of Ascidia malaca serum hemagglutinins were determined by hemagglutination inhibition tests. Analysis of agglutinins against rabbit and human A, B, O erythrocytes suggests that the size of the combining site corresponds to a disaccharide with a specificity for saccharides containing a D-galacto configuration (D-melibiose, D-raffinose, D-galactose, alpha-lactose, lactulose, L-arabinose). No anomeric specificity was observed with oligosaccharides. Characterisation of disaccharide fragments from the enzymatic digestion of heparin by liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry

Disaccharide fragments resulting from the enzymatic digestion of heparins with heparinase have been purified by gel filtration chromatography and directly analyzed by positive and negative ion liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry (LSIMS). Following the chromatographic purification from excess sodium salt, the mass spectra of di- and tetrasaccharide fragment mixtures enabled the identification of up to three covalently bound sulfate moieties per glycosaminoglycan-disaccharide unit, by means of their molecular ions, containing the corresponding alkali-counterions.

New functional ligands for ficolin-3 among lipopolysaccharides of Hafnia alvei.

Ficolin-1 (M), ficolin-2 (L), ficolin-3 (H) and mannan-binding lectin (MBL) activate the complement system and have opsonic activity. The specificity of ficolin-3 is poorly characterized and currently limited to a few ligands only. We present new specific targets for human ficolin-3, identified among lipopolysaccharides (LPSs, endotoxin) of Hafnia alvei. The interaction was restricted to LPSs of four strains: 23, Polish Collection of Microorganisms (PCM) 1200, PCM 1203 and PCM 1205 and limited to their O-specific polysaccharides (O-specific PSs) composed of different numbers of oligosaccharide (OS) repeating units (RUs). Synthesis of glycopeptides and neoglycoproteins containing the fucosylated linkage region of N-glycoproteins.

Abstract N-Glycoproteins fucosylated in the core region occur in tumor membranes and virus envelopes. Partial structures of such N-glycoproteins containing fucosylated chitobiosyl asparagine conjugates were synthesized using the allyloxycarbonyl (Aloc) and the tert-butyl ester protecting groups in the peptide portion. As the α-fucosidic bond of the conjugates revealed to be very sensitive to acids when carrying ether-type protecting groups, a method for exchanging the protecting groups of the fucose portion of saccharides was developed. Dynamics of the biosynthesis of methylursubin in plant cells employing in vivo 13CNMR without labelling.

Abstract In vivo NMR experiments with a digital 600 MHz instrument, exploiting the natural abundance of 13C, allowed us for the first time to follow the biosynthesis of the newly detected glycoside, methylursubin ( 4- methoxyphenyl -O-β- d -primeveroside ), from 4-methoxyphenol through the intermediate methylarbutin in cell suspensions of the Indian medical plant, Rauwolfia serpentina. The metabolic dynamics indicate that, within 48 hr, 4-methoxyphenol is almost completely converted into the primeveroside, methylursubin. Because of the higher sensitivity at 150.9 MHz compared to that at 100.6 MHz, measuring times could be reduced to 1.5 hr. This allows detailed monitoring of the conversion …
