Stick-slip and convergence of feedback-controlled systems with Coulomb friction

An analysis of stick-slip behavior and convergence of trajectories in the feedback-controlled motion systems with discontinuous Coulomb friction is provided. A closed-form parameter-dependent stiction region, around an invariant equilibrium set, is proved to be always reachable and globally attractive. It is shown that only asymptotic convergence can be achieved, with at least one but mostly an infinite number of consecutive stick-slip cycles, independent of the initial conditions. Theoretical developments are supported by a number of numerical results with dedicated convergence examples.

Abstract The Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt is located in the central Mediterranean area, and it represents the south-eastern arcuate segment of the Apennine-Maghrebide orogen. The tectonic evolution of the Sicilian belt is documented after outcrop analysis of small-scale structural features carried out throughout the region. This paper concerns the vibration response under moving loads of Euler–Bernoulli uniform beams with translational supports and rotational joints, featuring Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic behaviour. The evolution of COVID-19: A discontinuous approach.

The evolution of the COVID-19 disease is monitored on the basis of the daily number of infected patients and the daily number of deaths provided from national health agencies. The variation of such parameters with time parallels that described for the growth/decay of historic transportation systems revealing the appearance of discontinuities. The evolution of the pandemic disease is represented in terms of two nominally equivalent formulations: a logistic model with sharp changes in its rate parameters, and in topological terms resulting in 2nd order phase transitions in the infected patients/time space.

Identification of Nonlinear Systems Described by Hammerstein Models

This paper deals with a method for identification of nonlinear systems suitable to be described by Hammerstein models consisting of a static nonlinearity followed by an ARX linear model. The estimation of the static nonlinearity is carried out supplying the system with a sequence of step signals of various amplitude and determining the corresponding steady-state responses. The estimation of the parameters of the ARX linear system is carried out by means of a least square estimator using data generated supplying the system with a Pseudorandom Binary Sequence (PRBS). On the reconstruction of discontinuous functions using multiquadric RBF–WENO local interpolation techniques

Abstract We discuss several approaches involving the reconstruction of discontinuous one-dimensional functions using parameter-dependent multiquadric radial basis function (MQ-RBF) local interpolants combined with weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) techniques, both in the computation of the locally optimized shape parameter and in the combination of RBF interpolants. A correction method for the analysis of continuous linear one-dimensional systems under moving loads

A new correction procedure for dynamic analysis of linear, proportionally damped, continuous systems under traveling concentrated loads is proposed; both cases of non-parametric (moving forces) and parametric (moving mass) loads are considered. Improvement in the evaluation of the dynamic response is obtained by separating the contribution of the low-frequency (LF) modes from that of the high-frequency (HF) modes. Signatures of topological phase transitions in Josephson current-phase discontinuities

Topological superconductors differ from topologically trivial ones for the presence of topologically protected zero-energy modes. To date, experimental evidence of topological superconductivity in nanostructures has been mainly obtained by measuring the zero-bias conductance peak via tunneling spectroscopy. Here, we propose an alternative and complementary experimental recipe to detect topological phase transitions in these systems. We show in fact that, for a finite-sized system with broken time-reversal symmetry, discontinuities in the Josephson current-phase relation correspond to the presence of zero-energy modes and to a change in the fermion parity of the groundstate.
