Intensificatori e soggettificazione in latino: sulla grammaticalizzazione di maxime

2022

The aim of this paper is to investigate the grammaticalization path of the intensifying adverb maxime in Early Latin, within the perspective of the so-called ‘subjectification’ theory. Despite the difficulty of drawing discrete boundaries within the multifunctional category of adverbs, the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic analysis of maxime across different contexts of use allows us to identify at least three main functions of this adverb in early Latin texts, mostly in the Roman comedy of Plautus and Terence. In particular, adopting the perspective of the Functional Discourse Grammar, it is shown that maxime is used as (i) degree adverb, which modifies a large range of elements acting at …

A corpus-based analysis of language ideologies in Hungarian school metalanguage

2013

The main goal of this paper is to present a recently built interview corpus called Corpus of Hungarian School Metalanguage – Interview Corpus (CHSM-IC) and its potential in language ideology studies. This corpus was compiled during a broad survey on Hungarian school metalanguage carried out in 2009 and was recently made available for a wider research community within the CESAR (Central and South-East European Resources) project. The study investigates interactional routines used in metadiscourses on language use. Printed texts cited from prestigious handbooks and interview data from CHSM-IC are compared. Thus, widely used, culturally-inherited text fragments are detected and confronted with…

‘bien entendu’ vs ‘naturellement’: deux façons de désubjectiviser le dire

2011

Our study focuses on how the discourse markers (DM) participate in the construction of discursive alterity. In our approach, the DM builds, for an assertion, a guarantor with its own semantics, which is the semantics of the lexical element constituting the basis of DM. Naturellement and bien entendu build referential value which ”disempowers” the speaker as a guarantor of his words. This desubjectivation is realized differently in each case analyzed, and is determined by the semantic identity of the DM. In this article we analyze how the DM build modulated commitment of the speaker in his role as the guarantor, convened by the semantics of the DM in the ”disresponsibilization” of the speake…

Where lol is: function and position of lol used as a discourse marker in YouTube comments

2020

Lol is probably one of the most popular words in computer-mediated communication. It is generally taken to be the acronym of “laughing out loud”, but it is not always used to indicate a humorous response; rather, it is multifunctional. Drawing on previous studies of the different functions of lol, this paper explores a possible correlation between the position and function of non-lexicalized lol in the specific context of YouTube comments. The hypothesis is that the function of lol largely depends on its position: clause-initial lol is not used with the same functions as clause-final lol. The data for the study come from the comment threads of three popular YouTube videos posted in 2017, 20…

Diskursa iezīmētāji autora subjektīvās attieksmes paušanai

2018

Bakalaura darba tēma ir „Diskursa iezīmētāji autora subjektīvās attieksmes paušanai”. Izstrādājot darbu izvirzīti uzdevumi – apskatīt dažādu autoru rakstus par attiecīgi darbam nepieciešamajām teorijas tēmām; izstrādāt darba teorētisko pamatu, balstoties uz teorētiskās bāzes, apkopot diskursa iezīmētājus; analizēt iegūtos diskursa iezīmētājus un grupēt tos attiecīgās grupās pēc noteiktiem kritērijiem. Izstrādājot darbu padziļinātāk izprasti diskursa iezīmētāji, to funkcijas un izpausmes. Šī darba galvenie avoti, no kuriem ekscerpēti diskursa iezīmētāji, ir intervijas avīzēs un žurnālos – to struktūra ir jautājumu un atbilžu veidā –, un tāpat arī izmantoti avīžu un žurnālu raksti, kas ietver…

New is not always costly: evidence from online processing of topic and contrast in Japanese.

2013

Two visual ERP experiments were conducted to investigate topic and contrast assigned by various cues such as discourse context, sentential position and marker during referential processing in Japanese. Experiment 1 showed that there was no N400-difference for new vs. given noun phrases (NPs) when the new NP was expected (contrastively focused) based on its preceding context and sentential position. Experiment 2 further revealed that the N400 for new NPs can be modulated by the NP’s contrastive meaning (exhausitivity) induced from the marker. Both experiments also showed that new NPs engendered an increased Late Positivity. The reduced N400 for new vs. given supports an expectation-based lin…

Traducir u omitir conectores y operadores. Simetrías/disimetrías, pérdida de la información

2018

This paper aims to contribute to the study of translation or omission of operadores and conectores in Italian and Spanish written discourse, through the analysis of a corpus extracted from the bilingual magazine Legioni e Falangi/Legiones y Falanges. (1940-43), a direct expression of an ideological and, therefore, pragmatic symmetry between two totalitarian regimes during the Second World War. Based on the case of comunque, I contrast the processes of transposition of this segnale discorsivo, revealing at the same time some syntactic and semantic (dis)symmetries between the original texts and their translation. Este trabajo pretende contribuir al estudio de la traducción u omisión de operad…

Using Corpus Linguistics as a research and training tool for Public Service Interpreting (PSI) in the legal sector

2017

Public Service Translation has for long been the ‘forgotten voice’ in PSI studies but it is arguably a valuable linguistic support for legal institutions and for training interpreters in the legal sector. Given that interpreters in the legal system in Italy often tend to ‘double-up’ as legal translators (to make a living) the line between the two is often hazy. Hybrid modalities like sight translation of legal and administrative documents is also a ‘borderline’ feature of these intertwined professions. The main aim of this paper is to describe how parallel and monolingual corpora can be used to train public service interpreters in double roles (translators, interpreters), namely by using co…
