Tolerance, Empathy, and Inclusion

2021

AbstractIn this chapter, the authors analyze the artifacts in which the students explore the key attitudes of cultural literacy within the CLLP: Tolerance, empathy, and inclusion. The chapter introduces each attitude with critical discussion of its meanings, connections, and relations to other key concepts of cultural literacy, such as diversity, equality, and democracy. The authors explore how the program addresses these attitudes and the cultural texts it includes. The analysis of the artifacts reveals the variety of ways in which children give meanings to tolerance, empathy, and inclusion, such as helping others. In this meaning-making process, the students draw from their own experience…

PD48 - Relationship between Second Hand Smoke (SHS) exposure and atopy in social disadvantaged asthmatic children

2014

The evidence of a relationship between second hand smoke (SHS) exposure and atopy is inadequate. Smoke habit prevalence is higher in lower parental educational levels. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between SHS and atopy in asthmatic children focusing on socioeconomic status (SES). We studied 170 outpatient asthmatic children with different levels of asthma (GINA guidelines). Medical history was taken in standardized way to determine prevalence of SHS exposure and maternal smoking during pregnancy. Information about the highest level of parental education was collected as a proxy of SES level. All patients underwent skin prick test (SPT) and spirometry according t…

2014

Gender differential effects on rhinitis are infrequently studied. Aim of our study is to assess gender differences in host and environmental characteristics and in rhinitis severity level within the IBIM Pulmonary and Allergy Pediatric Clinic. A series of rhinitic (R) patients (September 2011 - May 2013) were investigated through standardized questionnaire and spirometry. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS. Preliminary results refer to 122 R patients: 77 males (M) (63.1%) and 45 females (F) (36.9%); age (years): 9.23 ± 3.42M vs 9.38 ± 3.02F; maternal history of rhinitis: 45.5%M vs 32.3%F (p<0.090); exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy:15.6%M vs 2.2%F (p<0.021); exposure …

Socio-cultural lock-ins and the difficulty of sustainability transition in fertilization : response to Struckman

2021

This commentary discusses the socio-cultural context of farming and proposes ways to break related lock-ins in the context of sustainability transition research. To be able to change farming practices and design policies to promote the changes, it is essential to understand what actually needs to change. Do we need to change the ways farmers think, the ways that food markets operate, the requirements of plant varieties or the requirements related to protecting water quality? In a complex situation the needed change emerges from the intertwinement of many different issues, which simultaneously work to create the locked-in situation. A focus on people and their practices provides a good start…

The early years of Monte dei Paschi's new journal, 1972-1983

2023

We set the stage in 1972 when the bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena founded Economic Notes as part of its manifold scheme to reach two main goals: going international and acquiring a stronger position in the public discourse on economics and finance. Then, we highlight how the new Journal aimed at achieving Monte's goals by adopting a specific editorial style. Moreover, through the turmoil of its first dozen years, Economic Notes' bold strategy attracted top international authors and testimonials, selected topical issues, knitted theory and policy, embraced pluralist and forward‐looking views, helped the University of Siena to strengthen its international connections. The Journal quickly becam…

Student’s voice online: Experiences of PE in Finnish schools

2012

The aim of this descriptive study was to find out how people describe their experiences of physical education (PE) in Internet discussion forums. The data for this study were collected during one randomly chosen week in April 2007 via a GoogleTM search using the Finnish word ‘koululiikunta’ [school PE]. The first 200 hits lead into nine discussion forums, which were analysed by using qualitative content analysis. These nine discussion forums included all together 356 messages. For searching these discussion forums no criteria about the writers’ age, race, class, gender or other were set. The messages were coded with sequential classification and grouped into positive, negative and both posi…

Review of Knowledge Management Models for Implementation within Advanced Product Quality Planning

2014

The purpose of this paper is to review different Knowledge Management Models (KMM) based on their strengths and weaknesses and to ascertain their possible implementation within the scope of the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) procedure. The KMM listed are selected based on an extensive literature review. They are presented in a visual manner and analyzed based on their structure and features, versus a predetermined set of criteria. This study offers an overview and a critical discussion of the merits and faults of a number KMM and suggests possible improvement avenues.

Conceptual Framework e Valutazioni: Dibattito e Proposte

2015

In response to the ‘2011 Agenda Consultation’, the IASB launched in July 2013 a new Discussion Paper on the ‘Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting’. This paper aims to offer a contribution to the debate on the effectiveness of the theme of ‘Measurement’, investigating the use of the current evaluation models in the literature and practice of Financial Reporting. The paper develops a synthetic proposal by means of a historical survey on normative and thought developments in the field of measurement. Panel Discussion: Systems for Data Analysis What they AEE; what they Could be?

1985

CRANE: I’d like to pose a couple of questions: (1) Command Languages — A tool for the astronomer or for the programmer? (2) Portability — Holy Cow or Red Herring? I propose that we start with the first one and see how far we get. If we don’t get past that, fine. If we get on to the question of portability, this is also fine. Let me just open up the discussion by asking Rudi Albrecht to make a comment.
