Multimodal disinformation about otherness on the internet : the spread of racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic fake news in 2020

2021

This work studies the use of disinformation to construct an image of otherness through the internet. We applied a content analysis methodology to the 161 racist, xenophobic or Islamophobic fake news pieces that were discredited in 2020 by the four Spanish information verification media entities accredited by the International Fact-Checking Network: Maldita.es , Newtral , Efe Verifica and Verificat . The results show that the most commonly used formats were image and video, that disinformation was most often based on taking information out of context and deception, and that the source could not be identified. The most shared characteristics associated otherness with receiving aid, violence a…

Threats to State Security in the Aspect of Disinformation

2021

Information in the aspect of security plays a significant role in influencing the spectrum of the functioning of the state. In today’s information chaos, information has become a tool of manipulation and disinformation, also used in the implementation of strategic goals of a given country. States can thus achieve their strategic goals because it is less costly, more difficult to detect, and allows some sort of manipulation of the rationale behind such actions. Such countries include countries for which democracy is only a concept. It can be indicated that information is a raw material that, in the process of manipulation and disinformation, becomes a kind of a tool that can be used in a tar…

Pseudo-Media Sites, Polarization, and Pandemic Skepticism in Spain

2021

The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered an authentic infodemic, which is a global epidemic of disinformation that has spread throughout most of the world. Social media platforms and pseudo-media outlets have contributed to the problem by producing and disseminating misleading content that is potentially dangerous to public health. This research focuses on a rather unknown phenomenon, which involves digital sites that mimic the appearance of news media but provide pseudo-information. Five Spanish pseudo-media have been analyzed with the aim of enhancing understanding of the issues and the frames presented. The results show clear links with the far-right ideology as well as the presence of a p…

Disinformation and Hate Speech: A European Constitutional Perspective

2020

What balance should be struck between freedom of expression, as an essential right and value of any democratic society, and other constitutional rights when facing falsehood and extreme speech? How are Europe and legislators around the world reacting to the rise of online disinformation and hate speech, in the wake of mounting evidence of adverse effects on democratic processes? What is the most effective approach to address and tackle harmful practices over the Internet, if any? These are some of the pivotal questions that this book seeks to explore.

Il valore costituzionale della buona informazione

2022

Is there a constitutional right to good information? In the age of the internet and digital platforms, this question becomes more urgent and more pressing. In the debate in the Constituent Assembly already emerged the need for a control on sources of information, a requirement that, however, did not find a formulation expressed in Art. 21stof the Italian Costitution. It speaks only of a possible intervention of the legislator aimed at making known the «means of financing the periodic press». Nevertheless, the constitutional culture of contemporary democracies brings with it the idea of a reliance on the individual in the quality of the information he receives and thus raises the question of…

How connected are the major forms of irrationality? : an analysis of pseudoscience, science denial, fact resistance and alternative facts

2017

Science is a fact-finding practice, but there are many other fact-finding practices that apply largely the same patterns of reasoning in order to achieve as reliable information as possible in empirical issues. The fact-finding practices form in their turn a subcategory of rational discourse, a wider category that also encompasses argumentation on non-empirical issues. Based on these categories, it is easy to see the relationship between on the one hand pseudoscience, on the other hand fact resistance, disinformation, and fallacies of reasoning. The flaws in argumentation are similar, and the main difference is whether or not the subject matter falls within or without the realm of science.

Vaccine Hesitancy on Social Media: Sentiment Analysis from June 2011 to April 2019

2021

Vaccine hesitancy was one of the ten major threats to global health in 2019, according to the World Health Organisation. Nowadays, social media has an important role in the spread of information, misinformation, and disinformation about vaccines. Monitoring vaccine-related conversations on social media could help us to identify the factors that contribute to vaccine confidence in each historical period and geographical area. We used a hybrid approach to perform an opinion-mining analysis on 1,499,227 vaccine-related tweets published on Twitter from 1st June 2011 to 30th April 2019. Our algorithm classified 69.36% of the tweets as neutral, 21.78% as positive, and 8.86% as negative. The perce…
