Osoby wychowywane poza rodziną własną, w opiece zastępczej, są szczególnie narażone na doświadczanie trudności życiowych oraz zagrożone wykluczeniem społecznym. Badania nad młodzieżą opuszczającą opiekę zastępczą prowadzone w Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych pokazują, że osoby te doświadczają wielu problemów w różnych obszarach funkcjonowania. Są to symptomy zaburzeń psychicznych, zachowania antyspołeczne, ryzykowne zachowania seksualne, nadużywanie substancji psychoaktywnych i wiktymizacja.
