Inverse photonic-crystal-fiber design through geometrical and material scalings

Geometrical and material - i.e., external and internal - scaling symmetries are exploited to obtain approximated analytical expressions for the mode effective index, group index, and chromatic dispersion of a scaled fiber. Our results include material refractive index scaling that changes the numerical aperture. First, the analytical expressions are successfully tested with a conventional step index fiber in a broadband range of wavelengths, from 1 to 2 mu m. Then, we establish a procedure to adapt the analytical expressions to photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and illustrate its application in a triangular PCF with circular holes. General measurement technique of the ratio between chromatic dispersion and the nonlinear coefficient

Measuring the nonlinear coefficient γ of any guiding medium, regardless of the sign and magnitude of its group-velocity dispersion parameter β 2 , is challenging because of the lack of general solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). Indeed, existing approaches typically need to disregard chromatic-dispersion effects to determine γ [1] . Here we propose an all-encompassing approach to measure the ratio β 2 /γ and prove our method in polarization-maintaining (PM) and single-mode (SM) fibers with positive and negative β 2 .
Dispersion of pressure at the inner edge of the neutron star crust

This paper presents a method for estimating the pressure variance at the inner edge of a neutron star crust. The obtained results quantify uncertainty in the estimation of pressure at the core-crust interface, implying that they depend on the selected equation of state and the neutron star’s mass distribution function. The quality of the transition pressure determination depends on the neutron star’s mass, with a significant decrease in accuracy for configurations with masses close to 2M . The method used makes it possible to control the theoretical part of the core-crust pressure dispersion in determining the observational quantities.

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) generated in microresonators with whispering gallery modes are demanded for different applications including telecommunications. Extending operating spectral ranges is an important problem for wavelength-division multiplexing systems based on microresonators. We demonstrate experimentally three spectrally separated OFCs in the C-, U-, and E-bands in silica microspheres which, in principle, can be used for telecommunication applications. We investigate the existence and dispersion characteristics of surface waves that propagate at an interface between a metal–dielectric superlattice and an isotropic dielectric. Within the long-wavelength limit, when the effective-medium (EM) approximation is valid, the superlattice behaves like a uniaxial plasmonic crystal with the main optical axes perpendicular to the metal–dielectric interfaces. We demonstrate that if such a semi-infinite plasmonic crystal is cut normally to the layer interfaces and brought into contact with a semi-infinite dielectric, a new type of surface mode can appear. The present work, which lies between macroecology and macroevolution, focuses on the spatio-temporal dynamics of early Pliensbachian ammonites of the western Tethys. Two main questions are addressed: how does inter-assemblage compositional similarity decrease with geographical distance? What is the relationship between species range size and phylogeny, species duration and latitudinal position?Ammonite dispersal dynamics are studied through a multi-scale Similarity Distance Decay analysis. Abstract The retention (I), dispersion (IM) and selectivity (I*) indices of sixteen polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and fourteen polychlorinated dibenzofurans were determined on a low-polarity HP-5 capillary column using a gas chromatograph connected with an ion-selective detector. IM and I* values were also calculated for all 73 dibenzo-p-dioxins from the di- to the octachloro isomer and for all possible 135 chlorinated dibenzofurans based on the predicted retention index data reported earlier. The effect of the position of chlorination is shown and the results are compared with those for several series of chlorinated aromatics.
All-optical regeneration of polarization of a 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero telecommunication signal

International audience; We report all-optical regeneration of the state of polarization of a 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero telecommunication signal. The device discussed here consists of a 6.2-km-long nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber, with low polarization mode dispersion, pumped from the output end by a backward propagating wave coming from either an external continuous source or a reflection of the signal. An initially scrambled signal acquires a degree of polarization close to 100% toward the polarization generator output.
