Effects of nonlinearity and substrate’s deformability on modulation instability in NKG equation

2017

International audience; This article investigates combined effects of nonlinearities and substrate's deformability on modulational instability. For that, we consider a lattice model based on the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with an on-site potential of deformable shape. Such a consideration enables to broaden the description of energy-localization mechanisms in various physical systems. We consider the strong-coupling limit and employ semi-discrete approximation to show that nonlinear wave modulations can be described by an extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation containing a fourth-order dispersion component. The stability of modulation of carrier waves is scrutinized and the following …

Dispersion relation formalism for the two-photon exchange correction to elastic muon-proton scattering: elastic intermediate state

2018

We evaluate the two-photon exchange correction to the unpolarized cross section in the elastic muon-proton scattering within dispersion relations. One of the six independent invariant amplitudes requires a subtraction. We fix the subtraction function to the model estimate of the full two-photon exchange at one of three MUSE beam energies and make a prediction for the two other energies. Additionally, we present single and double polarization observables accounting for the lepton mass.

Experimental observations of topologically guided water waves within non-hexagonal structures

2020

International audience; We investigate symmetry-protected topological water waves within a strategically engineered square lattice system. Thus far, symmetry protected topological modes in hexagonal systems have primarily been studied in electromagnetism and acoustics, i.e., dispersionless media. Herein, we show experimentally how crucial geometrical properties of square structures allow for topological transport that is ordinarily forbidden within conventional hexagonal structures. We perform numerical simulations that take into account the inherent dispersion within water waves and devise a topological insulator that supports symmetry-protected transport along the domain walls. Our measur…

Two-photon exchange corrections to elastic e− -proton scattering: Full dispersive treatment of πN states at low momentum transfers

2017

We evaluate the pion-nucleon intermediate-state contribution to the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction in the elastic electron-nucleon scattering within a dispersive framework. We calculate the contribution from all $\ensuremath{\pi}N$ partial waves using the MAID parametrization. We provide the corresponding TPE correction to the unpolarized $ep$ scattering cross section in the region of low momentum transfer ${Q}^{2}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.064\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, where no analytical continuation into the unphysical region of the TPE scattering amplitudes is required. We compare our result in the forward angular region with an alternative TPE calculation, in terms of struc…

Control of Space-Time Trajectories of Noise-Driven Optical Extreme Events in Metamaterial Waveguides

2019

Metamaterials offer the potential to precisely manipulate electromagnetic wave propagation in ways that cannot be achieved with materials found in nature. The formation and propagation of optical spatial solitons in metamaterials has been already investigated [1]. Here we report the theoretical and numerical investigations on temporal-spectral dynamics of nonlinear extreme events arising from the initial noise-perturbed plane wave in metamaterial waveguides. A typical waveguide structure used here is a planar structure with a metamaterial core and a part of the structure, in the form of the substrate, is replaced with a magnetooptic material. We assume that the core material is isotropic an…

Modulational instability in resonant optical fiber with higher-order dispersion effect

2010

International audience; The modulational instability (MI) of an electromagnetic wave in a resonant optical fiber with a two-level system is investigated. In the normal dispersion regime, we find the occurrence of nonconventional MI sidebands which are induced by the two-level resonant atoms. We also observe that the MI gain spectra are suppressed by the higher-order dispersion effect in the anomalous dispersion regime.

A perfect Fresnel acoustic reflector implemented by a Fano-resonant metascreen

2018

We propose a perfectly reflecting acoustic metasurface which is designed by replacing the curved segments of the traditional Fresnel reflector by flat Fano-resonant sub-wavelength unit cells. To preserve the original Fresnel focusing mechanism, the unit cell phase follows a specific phase profile which is obtained by applying the generalized Snell's law and Fermat's principle. The reflected curved phase fronts are thus created at the air-metasurface boundary by tailoring the metasurface dispersion as dictated by Huygens' principle. Since the unit cells are implemented by sub-wavelength double slit-shaped cavity resonators, the impinging sound waves are perfectly reflected producing acoustic…

Theoretical studies of the propagation of sound in narrow channels filled with helium II. I. The dispersion relations of fourth sound and of the fift…

1971

The wave propagation in helium II bounded by two plane-parallel plates forming a narrow channel is considered. The theory is based on the complete linearized set of the Khalatnikov equations. These equations are exactly averaged over the width of the channel taking into account the boundary conditions and symmetry relations. It is shown that in narrow channels three solutions of these equations exist; (a) fourth sound, (b) the so-called fifth-wave mode, and (c) another wave mode, which is very strongly damped. The dispersion relations of these wave modes are calculated with regard to all kinetic coefficients and to the coefficient of thermal expansion. The phase velocities and absorption co…

Modulational instability in fiber systems with periodic loss compensation and dispersion management

2003

In this paper we study modulational instability in a Kerr fiber taking into account the combined effects of periodic power variations and dispersion management. It is shown that periodic dispersion management and periodic amplification produce nonconventional MI sidebands which are essentially independent of each other. In addition, we show that the amplifier spontaneous emission noise tends to inhibit the growth of sidebands, for a sufficiently long propagation distance.

The Alignment of Galaxy Structures

2015

We analyzed the orientation of the sample of ACO galaxy clusters. We examined the alignment in a subsample of 1056 galaxy structures taken from the Panko–Flin (2006) Catalog with known BM morphological types. We were looking for a correlation between the orientation of the cluster and the positions of neighboring clusters. The Binggeli effect (the excess of small values of the Δθ angles between the direction toward neighboring clusters and the cluster position angle) is observed, having a range up to about 45 h−1 Mpc. The strongest effect was found for elongated BM type I clusters. This is probably connected with the origins of the supergiant galaxy and with cluster formation along a long f…
