Role of ambient light in the detection of contrast elements in digital dental radiography.

2018

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different ambient light levels on observer detection of small contrast differences in a contrast phantom by using a high-end liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Study Design An aluminum step wedge was converted into a contrast phantom by the addition of bore holes. Radiographic images of the contrast elements were presented to 20 observers. Images were displayed in random order under different ambient light levels (0, 50, 200, and 500 lux) twice, and the observers had to determine if contrast elements were visible. Sensitivity and specificity were determined to calculate areas under receiver operating characteristic curves and Friedmann…

PCR-Amplified cDNA Probes for Verification of Differentially Expressed Genes

1997

Differential display has proven to be a powerful technique for the detection and isolation of differentially expressed genes. By generating reproducible cDNA expression patterns, it is possible to compare gene expression by two or more cell types, developmental stages or tissues and to isolate as yet unknown differentially expressed genes. A sensitive method is necessary to verify the differential expression of the isolated cDNAs. Here we describe the use of adaptor-ligated, PCR-amplified total cDNA of the two cell types compared as a probe for Southern hybridizations with the isolated cDNAs.

Mid-region parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and gene expression of MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells.

2007

Abstract We have previously shown that PTHrP(38–94) amide restrains growth and invasion in vitro, causes striking toxicity and accelerates death of some breast cancer cell lines, the most responsive being MDA-MB231, for which tumorigenesis was also attenuated in vivo. We have also demonstrated that mid-region PTHrP gains access to the nuclear compartment of these cells and displays DNA-binding properties in vitro by recognizing targets in both cellular chromatin and isolated oligonucleotides. Here, we examined whether PTHrP(38–94) amide was able to modulate gene expression of MDA-MB231 cells, employing a combination of conventional, differential display and semi-quantitative multiplex PCR t…

Induction of tcI 7 , a gene encoding a β-subunit of proteasome, in tobacco plants treated with elicitins, salicylic acid or hydrogen peroxide 1

2000

We previously isolated, by differential display and 5′ RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends), cDNAs corresponding to genes activated following cryptogein treatment of tobacco cell suspensions, among them tcI 7 (tcI for obacco ryptogein nduced), a gene encoding a β-subunit of proteasome. Here, we report that tcI 7 was up-regulated in tobacco plants treated with elicitins (cryptogein and parasiticein) that have been shown to induce a systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Moreover, subsequent inoculation of tobacco with the pathogen Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae (Ppn) was shown to induce an additional activation of tcI 7 in tobacco plants pretreated with cryptogein. We also showed an…

Infiniviz: Taking Quake 3 Arena on a Large-Scale Display System to the Next Level

2018

The authors of this paper have previously presented a large-scale display system called Infiniviz in other publications. Infiniviz attempts to improve network bandwidth consumption and computational performance compared to other existing large-scale display systems. Since the previous publications have been made in early development stages of Infiniviz, only the overview of the software architecture and details of hardware implementation have been presented so far. This paper contains a real-life test of Infiniviz running Quake 3 Arena at a resolution of 9600 x 5400 at 24 fps. Also, in this paper, the authors have tried to match their results to what has been published by other researchers …

Insects encounter a vast repertoire of chemicals in their natural environment, which can signal positive stimuli like the presence of a food source, a potential mate, or a suitable oviposition site as well as negative stimuli such as competitors, predators, or toxic substances reflecting danger. The presence of specialized chemoreceptors like taste and olfactory receptors allow animals to detect chemicals at short and long distances and accordingly, trigger proper behaviors towards these stimuli. Since the first description of olfactory and taste receptors in Drosophila fifteen years ago, our knowledge on the identity, properties, and function of specific chemoreceptors has increased expone…

Design and Implementation of an Electronic Control Unit for a CFR Bi-Fuel Spark Ignition Engine

2017

In this work an Electronic Control Unit for the management of a CFR engine will be described. The engine, which is used both for fuel octane rating (both in terms of RON and MON) and for research purpose, is equipped with a double injection system, with the aim to independently operate both with liquid and gaseous fuels. The developed ECU, hence, is able to control the injections of both kind of fuel, together with the spark ignition. Furthermore the system is also able to measure fuel’s consumption, instantaneous engine speed of rotation and air-fuel ratio, showing all the running parameters both on a local LCD display and on a PC based graphical user interface.

Dental anatomy portrayed with microscopic volume investigations

1993

The clinical treatment of the root canal of teeth--called endodontics--assumes a precise idea of the spatial arrangement of the anatomy of teeth and their inner structure. By using computer-assisted data acquisition from filmed sequences of histologic serial sections and a special kind of magnetic resonance microscope--the Stray Field Imaging (STRAFI)--volume investigations were carried out using special functions of a newly developed 3D software. Possible applications and future perspectives are discussed.

<title>Fiber optical intensity-ratio refractometer with digital display</title>

1994

Simplicity, cost efficiency, and higher fidelity compared to the single-channel design are the main advantages stimulating the recent interest on fiber optic intensity-ratio sensors. Optical and electronic designs of refractometric sensors of this kind are discussed here. Two optical schemes of retroreflective probes with one input and two output fibers are proposed. The probe sensitivity to liquid refractivity changes in the interval 1.33 < n < 1.41 is studied by computer simulation. An originally developed one-ADC-based signal processing circuit providing digital display of the intensity-ratio determined n-values is described as well.
