Dissociating effect of upper limb non-use and overuse on space and body representations.

2015

Accurate and updated representations of the space where the body acts, i.e. the peripersonal space (PPS), and the location and dimension of body parts (body representation, BR) are essential to perform actions. Because both PPS and BR are involved in motor execution and display the same plastic proprieties after the use of a tool to reach far objects, it has been suggested that they overlap in a unique representation of the body in a space devoted to action. Here we determined whether manipulating actions in space, without modifying body metrics, i.e. through immobilization, induces a dissociation of the plastic properties of PPS and BR. In 39 healthy subjects we evaluated PPS and BR for th…

Encoding of human action in Broca's area.

2009

International audience; Broca's area has been considered, for over a century, as the brain centre responsible for speech production. Modern neuroimaging and neuropsychological evidence have suggested a wider functional role is played by this area. In addition to the evidence that it is involved in syntactical analysis, mathematical calculation and music processing, it has recently been shown that Broca's area may play some role in language comprehension and, more generally, in understanding actions of other individuals. As shown by functional magnetic resonance imaging, Broca's area is one of the cortical areas activated by hand/mouth action observation and it has been proposed that it may …

On the limits of familiarity accounts in lexical decision: The case of repetition effects

2019

Recent modelling accounts of the lexical decision task have suggested that the reading system performs evidence accumulation to carry out some functions. Evidence accumulation models have been very successful in accounting for effects in the lexical decision task, including the dissociation of repetition effects for words and nonwords (facilitative for words but inhibitory for nonwords). The familiarity of a repeated item triggers its recognition, which facilitates ‘word’ responses but hampers nonword rejection. However, reports of facilitative repetition effects for nonwords with several repetitions in short blocks challenge this hypothesis and favour models based on episodic retrieval. T…

The role of working memory in the association between number magnitude and space.

2007

In two experiments, participants performed a magnitude comparison task in single and dual-task conditions. In the dual conditions, the comparison task was accomplished while phonological or visuospatial information had to be maintained for a later recall test. The results showed that the requirement of maintaining visuospatial information produced the lack of spatial-numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect. The SNARC effect was not found even when the performance in the comparison task did not decline, as indicated by a similar distance effect in all conditions. These results show a special role for the visuospatial component of working memory in the processing of spatial rep…

The processing of mispredicted and unpredicted sensory inputs interact differently with attention

2018

International audience; Prediction and attention are fundamental brain functions in the service of perception. Interestingly, previous investigations found prediction effects independent of attention in some cases but attention-dependent in other cases. The discrepancy might be related to whether the prediction effect was revealed by comparing mis-predicted event (where there is incorrect prediction) or unpredicted event (where there is no precise prediction) against predicted event, which are associated with different precision-weighted prediction error. Here we conducted a joint analysis on four published electroencephalography (EEG) datasets which allow for proper dissociation of mispred…

Testing the flexibility of the modified receptive field (MRF) theory: evidence from an unspaced orthography (Thai).

2013

In the current study, we tested the generality of the modified receptive field (MRF) theory (Tydgat & Grainger, 2009) with English native speakers (Experiment 1) and Thai native speakers (Experiment 2). Thai has a distinctive alphabetic orthography with visually complex letters (ฝ ฟ or ผ พ) and nonlinear characteristics and lacks interword spaces. We used a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) procedure to measure identification accuracy for all positions in a string of five characters, which consisted of Roman script letters, Thai letters, or symbols. For the English speakers, we found a similar pattern of results as in previous studies (i.e., a dissociation between letters and symbols). I…

A novel technique for intraduodenal administration of drug suspensions/solutions with concurrent pH monitoring applied to ibuprofen formulations

2019

Characterization of dissolution of solid suspended drug particles in vivo is important for developing biopredictive in vitro tests. Therefore, methods to gain deeper insights into particle dissolution in vivo are needed. The soft Bioperm intubation method, a well established tool for investigation of permeability, absorption, metabolism, and drug interactions at predefined locations in the gastroinstinal tract, was modified. The novel intubation method involved pump-controlled infusion of pharmaceutical suspensions as well as simultaneous pH monitoring. This technique was used in a proof of concept study in healthy humans. Plasma sampling and non-compartmental analysis allowed comparison of…

Color-coded duplex ultrasonography of the origin of the vertebral artery: normal values of flow velocities.

2000

The introduction of color-coded duplex ultrasonography has improved the ease of performing ultrasound investigations of the vertebral arteries. So far, normal values of flow velocities have been reported only for the intertransverse region of the vertebral artery (V2 segments). Atherosclerotic disease at the origin of the vertebral arteries (V0 segment) is frequent and is one of the risk factors for vertebrobasilar ischemic disease. Normal values of flow velocities of the vertebral artery origin are needed to assess pathologic findings, such as vertebral artery origin stenosis or dissection. The aim of this study was to describe the normal flow velocities of vertebral artery origin (V0 segm…

Thrombosis in inherited factor VII deficiency

2003

Thrombosis in congenital factor (F) VII deficiency was investigated through extensive phenotypic and molecular-genetic studies. Patients with a history of thrombosis among 514 entries in the FVII Deficiency Study Group database were evaluated. Thrombotic events were arterial in one case, disseminated intravascular coagulation in another and venous in seven. Gene mutations were characterized in eight patients: three were homozygous, three compound heterozygous and two heterozygous. FXa and IIa generation assays were consistent with the genetic lesions. One patient was heterozygous for the FV Leiden and one for the FIIG20210A mutation. In seven patients, surgical interventions and/or replacem…

External Validation of Nomogram Predicting the Probability of Specimen-Confined Disease (pT2-3a, R0N0) in Patients Undergoing Radical Prostatectomy a…

2014

Introduction: Before radical prostatectomy (RP), a nomogram [Briganti et al., Eur Urol 2012;61:584-592] permits to measure the probability of specimen-confined (SC) disease (pT2-pT3a, node negative with negative margins) in high-risk prostate cancer (PCa). The aim of our study was to perform an external validation of this nomogram. Materials and Methods: Between 2007 and 2011, 623 patients with high-risk PCa (prostate-specific antigen (PSA) >20 ng/ml and/or biopsy Gleason score ≥8 and/or clinical stage T3) underwent RP and pelvic lymph node dissection at tertiary referral centers. Multivariable logistic regression models predicting the presence of SC disease were built in; we then used the …
