Natural organic matter, including humic substances (HS), comprises complex secondary structures with no defined covalent chemical bonds and stabilized by inter- and intra-molecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, Van der Waal’s forces, and pi-pi interactions. The latest view describes HS aggregates as a hydrogel-like structure comprised by a hydrophobic core of aromatic residues surrounded by polar and amphiphilic molecules akin a self-assembled soft material. Clinopyroxene and apatite are found to trace metasomatic processes in nepheline-bearing clinopyroxenites (tilaites) from the igneous, mafic-ultramafic Uralian-Alaskan-type complexes of Kytlym and Nizhny Tagil, Ural Mountains, Russian Federation. The clinopyroxenites consist predominantly of coarse-grained, partially to totally altered clinopyroxene phenocrysts in a matrix of fine-grained olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and nepheline. 18F-labeled non-sulfonylurea hypoglycemic agent (S)-2-(2-[(18)F]fluoroethoxy)-4-((3-methyl-1-(2-piperidin-1-yl-phenyl)-butylcarbamoyl)-methyl)-benzoic acid ([(18)F]repaglinide), a derivative of the sulfonylurea-receptor (SUR) ligand repaglinide, was synthesized as a potential tracer for the non-invasive investigation of the sulfonylurea 1 receptor status of pancreatic beta-cells by positron emission tomography (PET) in the context of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Efficient protocol for qubit initialization with a tunable environment

We propose an efficient qubit initialization protocol based on a dissipative environment that can be dynamically adjusted. Here the qubit is coupled to a thermal bath through a tunable harmonic oscillator. On-demand initialization is achieved by sweeping the oscillator rapidly into resonance with the qubit. This resonant coupling with the engineered environment induces fast relaxation to the ground state of the system, and a consecutive rapid sweep back to off resonance guarantees weak excess dissipation during quantum computations. Hypocenter and focal mechanism of an earthquake can be determined by the analysis of signals, named waveforms, related to the wave field produced and recorded by a seismic network. Assuming that waveform similarity implies the similarity of focal parameters, the analysis of those signals characterized by very similar shapes can be used to give important details about the physical phenomena which have generated an earthquake. Whole-lake experiments reveal the fate of terrestrial particulate organic carbon in benthic food webs of shallow lakes

Lake ecosystems are strongly linked to their terrestrial surroundings by material and energy fluxes across ecosystem boundaries. However, the contribution of terrestrial particulate organic carbon (tPOC) from annual leaf fall to lake food webs has not yet been adequately traced and quantified. In this study, we conducted whole-lake experiments to trace artificially added tPOC through the food webs of two shallow lakes of similar eutrophic status, but featuring alternative stable regimes (macrophyte rich vs. phytoplankton dominated). Photolysis of HCOOH monomer and dimer in solid argon: Raman characterization of in situ formed molecular complexes

Raman spectroscopy combined with the matrix isolation technique was employed to study the 193-nm photodecomposition products of formic acid in an argon matrix. The Raman-active fundamentals belonging to the CO(2) + H(2) and CO + H(2)O photoproducts were assigned. Also, bands due to Fermi resonance between the stretching vibration (nu(1)) and the overtone of the bending mode (2nu(2)) of CO(2) were identified. Both ortho- and para-H(2) molecules were identified from their rotational lines S(0)(1) and S(0)(0), respectively. These bands appeared upon matrix annealing as well as after prolonged photolysis. Time flow in dynamical systems is reconsidered in the ultralong time limit. The ultralong time limit is a limit in which a discretized time flow is iterated infinitely often and the discretization time step is infinite. The new limit is used to study induced flows in ergodic theory, in particular for subsets of measure zero. Induced flows on subsets of measure zero require an infinite renormalization of time in the ultralong time limit. It is found that induced flows are given generically by stable convolution semigroups and not by the conventional translation groups. Signature of cluster isomers in time-resolved photodissociation experiments

Abstract The unrecognized presence of structure isomers in mass-selected cluster ensembles may obstruct investigations of the systems’ intrinsic properties, since isomers differ not only in geometry, but also in other important properties. By the same token isomers are very interesting objects in the detailed study of atomic clusters. In the present work, different scenarios of isomeric coexistence are presented. They vary in the relative values of the interconversion barrier and the dissociation energies. For some idealized cases the possibility of a distinction of isomers by photodissociation experiments is discussed. In favorable situations isomeric structures may even be selected.
