How radical prostatectomy procedures have changed over the last 10 years in Italy: a comparative analysis based on more than 1500 patients participat…
2020
Purpose Therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer (PCa) have been evolving dramatically worldwide. The current article reports on the evolution of surgical management strategies for PCa in Italy. Methods The data from two independent Italian multicenter projects, the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA (started in 2007, holding data of 890 patients) and the Pros-IT-CNR project (started in 2014, with data of 692 patients), were compared. Differences in patients' characteristics were evaluated. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify characteristics associated with robot-assisted (RA) procedure, nerve sparing (NS) approach, and lymph node dissection (LND). Results The two cohorts did not …
Single-cell analysis of the ventricular-subventricular zone reveals signatures of dorsal and ventral adult neurogenesis
2021
The ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ), on the walls of the lateral ventricles, harbors the largest neurogenic niche in the adult mouse brain. Previous work has shown that neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) in different locations within the V-SVZ produce different subtypes of new neurons for the olfactory bulb. The molecular signatures that underlie this regional heterogeneity remain largely unknown. Here, we present a single-cell RNA-sequencing dataset of the adult mouse V-SVZ revealing two populations of NSPCs that reside in largely non-overlapping domains in either the dorsal or ventral V-SVZ. These regional differences in gene expression were further validated using a single-nucl…
Identification of Three Particular Morphological Phenotypes in Sporadic Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm: Phenotype III As Sporadic Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm …
2014
Abstract Aging has a striking impact on the heart and the vascular system, particularly on the large elastic arteries (i.e., aorta), resulting in a multitude of changes at different structural and functional levels. As result, medial degeneration (MD) occurs. A characteristic example of MD is sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysm (S-TAA), whose patho-physiological mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, typical MD morphological phenotypes were researched in S-TAA cases and control aorta specimens by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. Three phenotypes (I, II, and III) were detected, but mainly the phenotype III was observed. Elevated cystic MD, plurifocal medial apoptosis, and…
Merkel cell carcinoma: our experience in this rare pathology.
2010
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) was first described in 1972 by Toker, who described five cases of the so-called "trabecular carcinoma of the skin". MCC is a rare, aggressive skin cancer that affects mainly the elderly. Sun exposed areas are mainly affected, specially the head and neck. Immunohistochemical analysis is essential to reach a correct diagnosis. According to the origin of MCC, the tumor expresses both epithelial and neuroendocrine markers. MCC has a propensity for recurrence, regional and distant metastases. Several treatment options are available, such as surgical excision or Moh's surgery, accompanied by neck dissection or radio and chemotherapy in advanced cases. The present study…
Familial thoracic aortic aneurysm/dissection with patent ductus arteriosus: genetic arguments for a particular pathophysiological entity.
2004
International audience; Thoracic aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection (TAA and AD) are an important cause of sudden death. Familial cases could account for 20% of all cases. A genetic heterogeneity with two identified genes (FBN1 and COL3A1) and three loci (3p24-25 or MFS2/TAAD2, 5q13-q14 and 11q23.2-24) has been shown previously. Study of a single family composed of 179 members with an abnormally high occurrence of TAA/AD disease. A total of 40 subjects from three generations were investigated. In addition to five cases of stroke and three cases of sudden death, there were four cases of AD and four cases of TAA in adults. In all, 11 cases of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) were observed, t…
Resection of the mesopancreas (RMP): a new surgical classification of a known anatomical space
2007
Abstract Background Prognosis after surgical therapy for pancreatic cancer is poor and has been attributed to early lymph node involvement as well as to a strong tendency of cancer cells to infiltrate into the retropancreatic tissue and to spread along the peripancreatic neural plexuses. The objective of our study was to classify the anatomical-surgical layer of the mesopancreas and to describe the surgical principles relevant for resection of the mesopancreas (RMP). Immunohistochemical investigation of the mesopancreatic-perineural lymphogenic structures was carried out with the purpose of identifying possible routes of metastatic spread. Methods Resection of the mesopancreas (RMP) was per…
A curved Lowsley retractor improves manoeuvrability of the prostate during ascending radical retropubic prostatectomy
2007
Worldwide, radical retropubic prostatectomy is the commonest surgical procedure for treating localized prostate cancer. The technique has evolved continuously over the years, yielding improved continence and potency while reducing considerably the associated complications. Simple surgical ‘tricks’ have been proposed for crucial steps, e.g. the control of the dorsal venous complex, atraumatic dissection of the neurovascular bundles (NVBs), improved visualization of the urethral stump and tailoring of the vesicourethral anastomosis [1,2].
Histological and genetic studies in patients with bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aorta complications.
2011
OBJECTIVES: Aneurysm diameter and growing rate does not represent a definite parameter for operation in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), ascending aortic aneurysm and normal root patients. Thus, we investigated histological and immunohistochemical aspects of different segments of ascending aorta (precisely, aortic root without dilatation, aneurysmatic tubular portion, dissected ascending aorta) and genetic features of patients with BAV and ascending aorta complication (aneurysm or dissection). METHODS: Aorta tissue samples of 24 BAV patients were examined. The patients comprised of 18 men and 6 women; the mean age was 54.2 ± 14.3 years. All patients underwent composite aortic root replacement (…
Outcome after surgery for acute aortic dissection type A in patients over 70 years: data analysis from the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissectio…
2010
Objective: The number of elderly patients undergoing emergency surgery for acute aortic dissection type A (AADA) is rising. Published results report a higher risk for thesepatients comparedwith younger patients. The aim of our study wasto analyse the surgicaloutcomeof these patients and to identify those at risk. Methods: Between July 2006 and June 2009, 44 centres participating in the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA) reported a total of 1558 patients. As many as 381 patients were between 70 and 80 years of age (septuagenarians), while 83 patients were 80 years and older (octogenarians). We compared the clinical features and events occurring 30 days after surgery…
Mortality in patients with acute aortic dissection type A: analysis of pre- and intraoperative risk factors from the German Registry for Acute Aortic…
2015
Acute aortic dissection type A (AADA) is an emergency with excessive mortality if surgery is delayed. Knowledge about independent predictors of mortality on surgically treated AADA patients is scarce. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify pre- and intraoperative risk factors for death.Between July 2006 and June 2010, 2137 surgically treated patients with AADA were enrolled in a multicentre, prospective German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection type A (GERAADA), presenting perioperative status, operative strategies, postoperative outcomes and AADA-related risk factors for death. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the influence of different parameters …
