Synthesis of high-surface area CeO2 through silica xerogel template: influence of cerium salt precursor”;

Abstract Ceria nanosized oxides with high surface area were synthesized by means of a templating approach, using a porous silica xerogel with surface area as high as 718 m2/g. After impregnation of the silica template with the cerium salt solution and further calcination at 600 °C, the final ceria oxide was recovered by dissolving the silica framework in NaOH solution. The effect of cerium counteranion, nitrate or chloride, on the textural and reduction properties of the ceria oxide was examined. Activity of Antimicrobial Silver Polystyrene Nanocomposites.

A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Under such conditions the metal precursor decomposes producing silver atoms that diffuse into the polymer and clusterize. Abstract When used as a nanofiller for the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposites (PCNs), Cloisite® 30B (30B) often undergoes a d-spacing collapse, as demonstrated by a shift to wider angles of the XRD basal reflection. Such collapse has been variously attributed to organoclay contamination or, more often, to thermal degradation of the organic modifier with expulsion of the volatile products from the galleries. Phase diagrams were calculated for flowing solutions of polystyrene in trans-decahydronaphthalene assuming that the energy (Es) stored in the sheared state has to be added to the Gibbs energy of mixing; Es is computed from viscometric data (flow curves). The resulting phase diagrams exhibit two maxima in most of the cases instead of only one for the stagnant solutions. A comparison with experimental data (Part 1) shows that the calculated demixing behaviour agrees well for moderate shear rates and concentrations of the polymer. Polymer and Dye Probe Diffusion in Poly(methyl methacrylate) below the Glass Transition Studied by Forced Rayleigh Scattering

By dissolving tracer quantities of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) it was possible to study by forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) the tracer diffusion of the unbleached PQ as well as the photoproduct which is covalently bound to the PMMA molecules. The PMMA samples with molecular weights, Mw, of 103−105 were intermittently annealed at 80 °C for diffusion times of up to one year. From the results we conclude that polymer chain diffusion may be possible at temperatures more than 20 K below the glass transition temperature Tg, but further experiments are necessary, in particular, since we cannot exclude that our results are due to yet unexplained long time aging…

Silica-mineralizing organisms such as diatoms manage several aspects of silica chemistry when polymerizing monomeric silicic acid into amorphous silica. Silicic acid is undersaturated in the diatoms’ habitats and mechanisms of enrichment and prevention of uncontrolled mineralization are not well understood. The conversion process of "insoluble" prussian blue (PB) films into the "soluble" structure has been followed by the simultaneous measurement of current and mass changes during voltammetric experiments and focusing on the possibilities of the use of the instantaneous mass/electrical charge ratio at each potential.
