Body size increase in insular rodent populations: A role for predators?
2002
Insular mammalian populations living in areas of small size are often characterized by a drastic change in body mass compared to related continental populations or species. Generally, small mammals (less than 100 g) evolve into giant forms while large mammals (up to 100 g) evolve into dwarf forms. These changes, coupled with changes in other life, behavioural, physiological or demographic traits are referred to generally as the insular syndrome. We tested in this study the relative contribution of three factors - area of island, numbers of competitor species and number of predator species - to changes in body size of the woodmouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Our …
Attālināto mācību procesa elementi un to izmantošanas iespējas pamatskolas (5.-9. klase) svešvalodu stundās klātienē
2021
Diplomdarba temats “Attālināto mācību procesa elementi un to izmantošanas iespējas pamatskolas (5.-9.

A 3D deep learning approach based on Shape Prior for automatic segmentation of myocardial diseases
2020
Accurate three-dimensional (3D) cardiac segmentation from late gadolinium enhancement (LGE)-MRI plays a critical role in designing a structure of reference for diagnosing many cardiac pathologies such as ischemia, myocarditis and myocardial infarction. This segmentation is however still a non-trivial task, due to the motion artifacts during acquisition, and heterogeneous intensity distributions. In this study, we develop a fully 3D automated model based on deep neural networks (DNN) for LGE-MRI myocardial pathologies (scar and No-reflow tissues) segmentation in a new expert annotated dataset. Considering that damaged tissue constitutes a small area of the whole LGE-MRI, we concentrated on m…
Negotiating the symbolic power of information and communication technologies (ICT): The spread of Internet-supported distance education
2009
Submitted version of an article in the journal: Information Technology for Development The deposited fulltext is a preprint of the definitive article at Wiley Interscience http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/itdj.20110 The Internet may be, as typically suggested, important in distance education for facilitating connections between groups of students, educational institutions, and external learning resources. This article, however, reveals why this is not the only reason for applying information and communication technologies (ICT) in higher education in a remote area in a developing country. In addition, the Internet seems to be of great importance in symbolizing modernization and progress, thereby a…
Human Capital and E-Learning
2009
Companies are increasingly conscious of the fact that the achieving of their objectives, together with the improvement of their competitive advantages, depends on the appropriate management of the human factor. The dynamism and strong competition that characterize the business world make it increasingly necessary to introduce a system of human resources to allow the exploiting of the knowledge and skills of both people and teams, thus encouraging their learning capacity. In this context, e-learning is becoming established as a flexible and quick way of improving the acquiring of knowledge and skills within a company. The rapid growth and expansion of e-learning, together with the failure of…
Overcoming Cultural Distance in Social OER Environments
2014
Open educational resources (OERs) provide opportunities as enablers of societal development, but they also create new challenges. From the perspective of content providers and educational institutions, particularly, cultural and context-related challenges emerge. Even though barriers regarding large-scale adoption of OERs are widely discussed, empirical evidence for determining challenges in relation to particular contexts is still rare. Such context-specific barriers generally can jeopardize the acceptance of OERs and, in particular, social OER environments. We conducted a large-scale (N = 855) cross-European investigation in the school context to determine how teachers and learners percei…
Experience in Implementing Distance Learning Technologies in an International Context
2021
The relevance of the study is determined by socio-cultural processes, which necessitate the revision of methods for organising the educational process, in particular the transition to distance learning, and the establishment of correlations with international standards. The purpose of the article is to identify the features, advantages, and disadvantages of distance learning, along with the prospects for development in accordance with the comparative analysis of Ukrainian and foreign experience with distance education. Methods and techniques varied depending on the tasks at each research stage, thus, the method of a targeted selection, the comparative method, the generalisation and systemat…
Comparison of genomic sequences clustering using Normalized Compression Distance and Evolutionary Distance
2008
Genomic sequences are usually compared using evolutionary distance, a procedure that implies the alignment of the sequences. Alignment of long sequences is a long procedure and the obtained dissimilarity results is not a metric. Recently the normalized compression distance was introduced as a method to calculate the distance between two generic digital objects, and it seems a suitable way to compare genomic strings. In this paper the clustering and the mapping, obtained using a SOM, with the traditional evolutionary distance and the compression distance are compared in order to understand if the two distances sets are similar. The first results indicate that the two distances catch differen…
Lung CT Image Registration through Landmark-constrained Learning with Convolutional Neural Network
2020
Accurate registration of lung computed tomography (CT) image is a significant task in thorax image analysis. Recently deep learning-based medical image registration methods develop fast and achieve promising performance on accuracy and speed. However, most of them learned the deformation field through intensity similarity but ignored the importance of aligning anatomical landmarks (e.g., the branch points of airway and vessels). Accurate alignment of anatomical landmarks is essential for obtaining anatomically correct registration. In this work, we propose landmark constrained learning with a convolutional neural network (CNN) for lung CT registration. Experimental results of 40 lung 3D CT …
