Can recreational scuba divers alter natural gross sedimentation rate? A case study from a Mediterranean deep cave

2010

Abstract Di Franco, A., Ferruzza, G., Baiata, P., Chemello, R., and Milazzo, M. 2010. Can recreational scuba divers alter natural gross sedimentation rate? A case study from a Mediterranean deep cave. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 871–874. Submarine caves are environments with features distinguishing them from other littoral habitats but, despite their ecological importance, their response to anthropogenic disturbance has been seldom verified. One potential threat affecting natural communities within caves is represented by recreational scuba diving. Divers' disturbance within marine caves is mainly related to physical contacts and increased sediment resuspension potentially affecti…

Effects of recreational scuba diving on Mediterranean fishes: evidence of involuntary feeding?

2013

Despite a large body of literature assessing the impacts of recreational scuba diving on marine habitats, little attention has been paid to the potentially harmful effects this has on fishes. The aim of this study was the assessment of the immediate response of different fish species to divers’ activities. A decrease of fishes’ natural diffidence towards divers is shown, probably due to an enhanced availability of their prey as a result of divers’ contacts with the substrate.

From the Ultimate God to the Virtual God: Post-Ontotheological Perspectives on the Divine in Heidegger, Badiou, and Meillassoux

2014

The Heideggerian account of the ontotheological constitution of Western metaphysics has been extremely influential for contemporary philosophy of religion and for philosophical perspectives on theology and the divine. This paper introduces and contrasts two central strategies for approaching the question of the divine in a non- or post-ontotheological manner. The first and more established approach is that of post-Heideggerian hermeneutics and deconstruction, inspired by Heidegger’s suggestion of a “theology without the word ‘being’” and by his later notions of an “ultimate god” and of “divinities” as one of the four axes of the fourfold (Geviert). Here, the divine is no longer articulated …

Divinyl Sulfone Cross-Linked Hyperpolymeric Human Haemoglobin as an Artificial Oxygen Carrier in Anaesthetized Spontaneously Breathing Rats

1994

Hyperpolymeric haemoglobin in concentrations necessary to transport oxygen in organism to a significant extent exhibits a negligible oncotic pressure as compared to that of plasma. This property makes hyperpolymeric haemoglobins suitable for development of an artificial oxygen transporting blood additive. With such an additive - in contrast to an oxygen transporting plasma expander - combating a chronic oxygen deficit of tissue (brain, heart, kidney, extremities or in case of anaemia) is possible. Using in these cases an isoncotic oxygen carrying plasma expander instead of an additive would be even more detrimental because of fluid load to heart, at least in case of heart injury. Chronic ox…

SPME of 52 pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls: Extraction efficiencies of the SPME coatings poly(dimethylsiloxane), polyacrylate, poly(dimethyl…

2001

Fiber/water partition coefficients (Kfw) of 52 pesticides, including triazines, organophosphorus pesticides, organochlorine pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were experimentally calculated for the five polymeric coatings poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polyacrylate (PA), poly(dimethylsiloxane)-Divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB), Carboxen-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (CAR-PDMS), and Carbowax-divinylbenzene (CW-DVB) commercially available for solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography. The equilibrium-time profiles for the five coatings were previously studied in order to establish the time needed for equilibrium. To calculate Kfw the amount of analyte extracted at equilibrium w…

Sudden death in water: Diagnostic challenges

2016

Abstract The authors report a case of sudden death in a breath-holding diver and highlight the forensic diagnostic difficulties in opining the cause of sudden death in water. The autopsy showed increased thickness of the left ventricular wall with a distinct pattern of concentric hypertrophy, evident particularly in the subaortic interventricular septum. Histological examination revealed diffuse interstitial fibrosis and associated findings of multifocal myocyte disarray especially evident in the subaortic interventricular septum. The analysis and discussion of this case made it possible to attribute sudden death to a lethal arrhythmia following myocyte disarray and hypoxia caused by breath…

The ‘wonderful story ’constitutes an effective resource that myth provides to ancient societies to articulate and explain man’s relationship with nature and the presence or absence of divine protection.

An Analysis of the Concentration Effects on Elution Volumes by Using the Preferential Solvation Parameter in Two SEC Packings

2002

Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) elution behavior of different solvent/polymer systems has been analyzed from chromatographic, thermodynamic, and hydrodynamic points of view in two organic column packings based on polystyrene/divinylbenzene (PS/DVB) copolymer, μ-styragel and TSK-Gel H HR . Although both packings present similar chromatographic properties, some differences arise when eluting the same systems. The values of the adsorption distribution coefficients, K p , have been correlated with the preferential solvation coefficient, λ (see Figure), for both packings, showing that those systems with lower and negative λ values (denoting higher preferential solvation of the polymer by the…
