Elucidating geological and biological processes underlying the diversification of Sulawesi tarsiers.

2009

Because of their exceptionally long independent evolution, a range diminution of their Eocene relatives, and a remarkable subsequent diversification in Southeast Asia, tarsiers are of particular importance to evolutionary primatologists. Little is known, however, on the processes shaping the radiation of these small enigmatic primates—especially on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, their center of endemism. Geological reconstructions and progress in applying DNA sequence information to divergence dating now provide us with the tools and background to comprehend tarsier dispersal. Here, we describe effects of plate-tectonic movements, Pleistocene sea level changes, and hybridization on the…

The empowerment of parliament in the transition from an authoritarian to a democratic regime : Indonesian experiences and problems

2018

This article presents the experiences and problems of the Indonesian parliament, or DPR (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat), during the transition from an authoritarian regime to a democratic one, in 1999–2004. Despite empowerment through the amended constitution and political laws, the DPR did not significantly change its parliamentary procedure and practices. The problems in the DPR actually lie in its procedure. The DPR procedure and the parliamentary debates retain the authoritarian tradition that favours the executive government (president), encouraging small groups of commissions to take the decisions and to discuss parliamentary tasks outside the plenary session. Aspects of parliamentary proce…

"The Dutch Legacy in the Indonesian Parliament"

2013

th century; Parliamentary procedure Abstract The Indonesian parliament, the DPR, today presents its similar characteristics as the Dutch parliament in the 19 th century. The historical trajectories show that when establishing the core of the parliament institution, the founding fathers copied what the colonial government had been practiced, and maintained during the authoritarian regime in Indonesia, accordingly the Dutch legacy lingered. Consequently, in the wave of democratic era, after the fall of the authoritarian president, the same institution should have adapted itself into a more democratic institution, but remained weak due to its outdated characteristics. This paper shows the hist…

The Role of Parliament in Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of Southeast Asia in International Parliamentary Forums

2021

Parliament has its role in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). SDG number 16 on peace, justice, and strong institution states one indicator of a legislative institution (for “responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative”, that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) commits to achieve. However, parliament must support the government in achieving all SDG programs as stated in Agenda 2030. What is the role of parliament in this and how to achieve it? This paper aims to show that the role of parliament in SDG is beyond the traditional legislative role of legislating, budgeting and overseeing the government, but more on representing people, meaning channeling people’s voice a…

Enzymatic modification of starches to improve their technological and functional properties

2018

The role of the principal's instructional leadership at schools in Indonesia

2016

The education system in Indonesia, based on Ministry of National Education, has been performing instructional leadership as a major part of the effective school leaders’ behavior. One of the goals of instructional leadership implementation is to increase the learning outcomes of students. However, many of international student assessments have shown that Indonesia’s education system was among the incompetent countries. The purpose of the study is to analyze the implementation of instructional leadership phenomenon as the basic concept of effective leadership. This study was designed to investigate both principals and teachers about the role of principals’ instructional leadership. A qualita…

Social Science Research in Southeast Asia : the Challenges of Studying Parliamentary Institutions

2019

This paper introduces the challenges of studying parliamentary institutions in Southeast Asia. My focus of research is in three countries’ institutions: national parliaments of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. While in Southeast Asia, it is widely known that studying issues of politics and institutions face challenges – compared to studying culture, for example, this view is arguably no longer valid, however with certainqualification. The comparison of parliamentary tradition between three countries – based on observation of the plenary session - reveals that the effectiveness of parliamentary works is related to parliamentary procedure, and even to the culture of work in the countries. Pa…

Indonezyjska autonomiczna prowincja Aceh - rozsadnik islamskiego radykalizmu?

2018

Nękana najdłuższym konfliktem zbrojnym w dziejach Indonezji (pomiędzy separatystami a wojskiem indonezyjskim) prowincja Aceh na północy Sumatry uzyskała upragnioną szeroką autonomię w ramach unitarnego państwa.
