EXAFS studies on the local structure of Er3+ ions in silica xerogels co-doped with aluminium

2001

The local environment around Er3+ ions in wet and densified (at 900°C) silica xerogels (pure and co-doped with aluminium) has been studied at the Er L3-edge by X-ray absorption spectroscopy using the fluorescence detection technique. The radial distribution functions (RDF), reconstructed from X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), show several changes in the local co-ordination of erbium ions upon densification: shortening of the Er-O and Er-Si/Al distances, decrease of the co-ordination numbers and broadening of the Er-O RDF. The effect of Al co-doping is clearly discerned by EXAFS in both the first and second co-ordination shells for densified gels and mainly in the second shell for wet…

Formation of nanostructures in Eu3+ doped glass-ceramics: an XAS study.

2012

We describe the results of x-ray absorption experiments carried out to deduce structural and chemical information in Eu(3+) doped, transparent, oxyfluoride glass and nanostructured glass-ceramic samples. The spectra were measured at the Pb and Eu-L(III) edges. The Eu environment in the glass samples is observed to be similar to that of EuF(3). Complementary x-ray diffraction experiments show that thermal annealing creates β-PbF(2) type nanocrystals. X-ray absorption indicates that Eu ions act as seeds in the nanocrystal formation. There is evidence of interstitial fluorine atoms around Eu ions as well as Eu dimers. X-ray absorption at the Pb-L(III) edge shows that after the thermal treatmen…

Local Environment of Yttrium in Y-Doped Barium Cerate Compounds

2006

The local structure of yttrium in Y-doped BaCeO3 compounds was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Y K-edge. Data analysis shows that the local environment of Y3+ changes, resulting in a distorted octahedron. The structural distortion found does not depend on the dopant amount at the investigated compositions, but on the level of hydration, as clearly demonstrated by the distortion increase in the BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-ä sample after the treatment in O2/H2O. In situ measurements performed in O2/H2O flux, which show that the distortion is retained at 753 K, are also reported. The observed significative structural changes seem to point out a preferential insertion of the hydroxyl…

Co doped ZnO nanowires as visible light photocatalysts

2016

Abstract High aspect ratio cobalt doped ZnO nanowires showing strong photocatalytic activity and moderate ferromagnetic behaviour were successfully synthesized using a solvothermal method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities evaluated for visible light driven degradation of an aqueous methylene orange (MO) solution were higher than for Co doped ZnO nanoparticles at the same doping level and synthesized by the same synthesis route. The rate constant for MO visi…

Near-IR-to-visible emission in ytterbium-doped silica fiber at in-core 488-nm pumping

2008

We report near-IR-to-visible broadband emission in Ytterbium-doped silicate fiber (YF) at 488-nm in-core excitation. This emission is revealed to originate from Yb3+-Yb3+ pair clusters (900 – 1200-nm band), whose presence is proved by a separate study of cooperative processes in the fiber, and Yb2+ phototropic centers (600 – 900-nm band) provisionally accepted to be present in the YF.

Application of WGM Resonances to the Measurement of the Temperature Increment of Ho and Ho-Yb Doped Optical Fibers Pumped at 1125 and 975 nm

2021

Optical fiber characterization using whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself has been demonstrated to be a powerful technique. In this work, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances to characterize the pump-induced temperature increment in holmium doped and holmium-ytterbium codoped optical fibers. The technique relies on the measurement of the resonances’ wavelength shift due to temperature variation as a function of the pump power. Holmium doped fibers were pumped to the second excited level 5I6 of the Ho3+ ion using a laser diode at 1125 nm and ytterbium-holmium codoped fibers to the 2F5/2 level of the Yb3+ ion by a laser diode at 975 nm. Ou…

All polarization-maintaining passively mode-locked fiber-ring ytterbium-doped laser; from net-normal to net-anomalous dispersion

2020

We investigated the behavior of a fiber-ring polarization-maintaining passively modelocked ytterbium-doped laser in a broad range of dispersion values; i.e., from highly net-normal to net-anomalous, with a special emphasis near the zero of chromatic dispersion. Different lengths of an ad hoc polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber were used as intracavity dispersion compensator to shift the operation of this laser from net-normal to the net-anomalous regime. The laser generated the shortest light pulses around the zero of dispersion: 6 ps / 7ps for −0.023 ps2 / 0.045 ps2 ; in both cases, pulses were not transform-limited, being theoretically possible an out-of-cavity recompression d…

Coexistence of quasi-CW and SBS-boosted selfQ-switched pulsing in ytterbium-doped fiber laser with low Q-factor cavity

2020

We report the results of an experimental study of an ytterbium-doped fiber laser with low Q-factor cavity. We demonstrate that the laser operates in two randomly alternating sub-regimes, quasi-CW (QCW) and self-Q-switching (SQS), the latter ignited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). We show that probability of each sub-regime depends on pump power: QCW dominates slightly above the laser threshold while SQS pulsing prevails at higher pump powers. We also discuss the featuring details of QCW sub-regime and its role in instabilities (jittering) of SBS-boosted SQS pulsing as well as the statistical properties of the latter.

Y:BaZrO 3 Perovskite Compounds II: Designing Protonic Conduction by using MD Models

2011

The proton dynamics in Y-doped BaZrO(3) derivatives, in particular the different dopant environments within a Pm3m cubic framework, were studied by using classical molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. Single- and double substitution of zirconium by yttrium atoms was considered. The presence of yttrium induced variations in the surrounding oxygen sites, according to their local geometrical arrangements. The differences among such distinct oxygen sites became evident when protons interacted with them and upon changes in the temperature. So, different proton transfer pathways, which had different energy barriers, characterized the topologically different oxygen sites. The experimental proton-…
