Electrochemical abatement of chloroethanes in water: Reduction, oxidation and combined processes

2010

An electrochemical route, based on the anodic oxidation to carbon dioxide coupled with the cathodic reduction to de-halogenated hydrocarbons, was proposed for the treatment of waters contaminated by chloroethanes. The electrochemical abatement of two model compounds, namely 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, was carried out by cathodic reduction at silver, anodic oxidation at boron doped diamond (BDD) and combined processes. The anodic oxidation gives rise to a high abatement of the concentration of both these compounds and of COD. The reduction of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane proceeds also with high abatement but with the formation of some halogenated intermediates and final pr…

A crystalline radical cation derived from Thiele’s hydrocarbon with redox range beyond 1 V

2021

Thiele’s hydrocarbon occupies a central role as an open-shell platform for new organic materials, however little is known about its redox behaviour. While recent synthetic approaches involving symmetrical carbene substitution of the CPh2 termini yield isolable neutral/dicationic analogues, the intervening radical cations are much more difficult to isolate, due to narrow compatible redox ranges (typically  1 V), permitting its isolation in crystalline form. Further single-electron oxidation affords borenium dication 12+, thereby establishing an organoboron redox system fully characterized in all three redox states. We perceive that this strategy can be extended to other transient organic rad…

Targeting BCL-2 family proteins to overcome drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer.

2007

Cytotoxic chemotherapies are standard of care for patients suffering from advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, objective responses are only achieved in 20% of cases and long-term survival is rarely observed. Clinically applied anticancer drugs exert at least some of their activities by inducing apoptosis. A critical step in apoptotic signal transduction is the permeabilization of the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM), which is regulated by the BCL-2 family of proteins. Hence, therapeutic targeting of BCL-2 proteins is a promising approach to increase the drug-sensitivity of cancers. To this end we have assessed the impact of conditional expression of the proapoptotic multi…

Income, Sex, Pills and Relationships: An Empirical Study for Argentina

2016

We use 28 years of Argentina’s life satisfaction (LS) and happiness (HA) data to test the Easterlin Paradox and find out the actual determinants of happiness. Argentineans are happier now than in 1984, and the City of Buenos Aires leads in present rankings of happiness in Argentina. In the cross-section analysis, LS correlates with the satisfaction about the economic situation of households, but the satisfaction with family and time spent with loved ones have a higher explanatory power. When it comes to HA, high social class members do not always buy a ticket, but low class makes people sadder. Nontraditional variables – pills for mental stress and sex – were also studied.

Paradoxical social representations of linky smart meters and privacy paradox

2021

Consumer participation to electricity consumption reduction (ECR) has become a major challenge in a context of Energy Transition. The Linky french Smart Meter, which use contributes to ECR, is confronted to many controversies reflecting the social legitimation at stake which underlies its evaluation. This article proposes to study privacy paradox regarding Linky Smart Meter use, mobilizing the conceptual background of consumer psychological empowerment. In that aim, a social representation analysis was conducted involving 271 respondents. Results highlight, on one hand, a privacy paradox involving 3 out of the 4 dimensions of psychological empowerment, and on another hand, the presence of m…

Residual antibacterial activity of a new modified sodium hypochlorite-based endodontic irrigation solution

2010

Objective: In this in vitro study the antibacterial substantivity of a new sodium hypochlorite-based root canal irrigant (Hypoclean) in bovine root dentin was investigated. Study Design: Ninety dentin tubes prepared from bovine incisor teeth were used. After contamination for 14 days with Enterococcus faecalis, the specimens were divided into five groups as follows: Hypoclean; Tetraclean; 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); infected dentin tubes (positive control); and sterile dentin tubes (negative control). Dentin chips were collected with round burs into tryptic soy broth and after culturing, the number of colony-forming units (CFU) was counted. Results: The number of CFU was minimum in t…

Technical-economical evaluation for distributed storage applications. An Italian case study for a medium-scale public facility

2014

Time-of-use energy cost management involves the use of storage by customers to reduce their electricity bills. This can be accomplished by charging the storage during off-peak time periods, when electricity energy prices are low, and discharging it during times when on-peak energy prices are applied. This article addresses the question whether it is economically viable to install medium-scale distributed storage devices in the power system designed to lower the electricity cost for a customer-side application, assuming flexible electricity tariffs. The technical/economical evaluation is carried out referring to Lithium ion (Li-ion), Sodium Sulphur (NaS) and Vanadium Redox Battery (VRB) tech…

Co-evolution between trust in teachers and higher education toward digitally-rich learning environments

2017

Based on a powerful notion that the quality of higher education is crucial for innovation in digital economy and that such quality is subject to a conception of trust in teachers to deliver good education and advancement of information and communication technology (ICT), the dynamism of co-evolution between them was analyzed. Using a unique dataset representing the above system consisting of the rate of trust in teachers providing good education in the context of quality of education and their social status, of the level of higher education and the state of ICT advancement toward digitally-rich learning environments, an empirical numerical analysis of 20 countries was attempted. These count…
