"Lato" Tadeusza Rittnera. "Ostatnie dni starej Europy" i nowoczesny teatr uczuć

2021

This is a reassessment of the work of Tadeusz Rittner, a bilingual Polish/German writer and dramatist from Galicia who won much acclaim in the early decades of the last century. This article examines his narrative and dramatic strategies by focusing on his drama Lato (Summer), published in 1913. It is a story about a timid young man who, after hearing from his doctor that he will not live much longer, turns suddenly into a bold and shameless seducer. This could be the stuff of a conventional, farcical exposure of middle class hypocrisy, yet in Rittner’s drama it becomes a fascinating study, never far from Czekhov and Witkacy, tapping all the resources of realism, irony and grotesque to show…

Poetycki teatrzyk małych form dramatycznych na łamach "Muchy" i "Kolców" w latach siedemdziesiątych XIX wieku

2017

The repertoire of humorous periodicals, even at its early inception, allows to be organized according to numerous criteria – thematic, genealogical, formal and aesthetic ones. One can distinguish marriage and family, professional and social, fantastic and parody dramas. The selected types penetrate each other. Formal parody was signaled by subtitles containing the qualification that determined the formal shape of the work. In this way the newspaper theater revived the conventions revoked by the literary reform of Romanticism. A theater of Paris cabarets was to soon follow in its footsteps with the projects of great 19th century stage reformers – and this is not the only resemblance to the l…

What Drives Populist Styles? Analyzing Immigration and Labor Market News in 11 Countries

2019

The success of populist political actors in Western democracies and the dramatization and emotionality of political communication in news media have been the object of several theoretical and empirical studies in the past decade. It has been argued that the mediatization of politics and the convergence of populist and tabloid communication styles foster these developments by mutual promotion in mass communication. This article uses a cross-national quantitative content analysis to disentangle associations among news genres, populist actors, content, and style. In spite of indisputable prevalence of populist styles in tabloid style media, populist ideology is identified as their strongest s…

2002

Prevalence rates of birth defects in the Federal Republic of Germany are informative to assess the general background risk of having a child with a birth defect. They provide basic figures to determine temporal and regional prevalence trends, to evaluate and initiate preventive measures and to initiate research projects. To avoid observer, definition and collection bias, active monitoring systems are required. Data collected in the active monitoring system of the Mainz Birth Defects Registry are presented. From 1990-1998, 30,940 live-births, stillbirths and abortions underwent standardized physical and sonographic examinations. Anamnestic data were collected from prenatal care records, mate…

Quanta romantica affabulazione in tale assunto!

THE THEORIES AND PRACTICES OF LOPE AND MORATÍN: THE NEW THEATRE AND 'THE NEW PLAY'

2021

2013

Lope defended the usefulness of history presented on stage, that is, theatre’s function of preserving and creating a collective memory. In the case of La nueva victoria de don Gonzalo and La nueva victoria del marqués de Santa Cruz, this playwright dramatized military events that took place immediately before the composition of these plays. In this article i will analyze the fundamental traits of those texts in relation to Lope’s desire to please his patrons and, at the same time, to participate in the making of a Spanish national identity, which intensified during the first years of king Philip IV’s reign through different media, among them painting and theatre. This paper ends reflecting …
