The Urban Landscape in the Graphic Representation of the Cathedral of Palermo

2018

This study proposes some reflections on the relationship between the Cathedral of Palermo and the urban portion where it is placed, in relation to the indissoluble connection with the landscape that in the history offered a variety of perceptive suggestions marked by the passage and the coexistence of different cultural and social domination. To this end, the multiscale historical-urban planning analysis puts in place the role that territorial and urban morphology has had over time in relation to the Cathedral of Palermo. In this sense, the relationship between the architectural artefacts, such as the Royal Palace and the Town Hall, and the urban context is studied according to its access r…

Disegni di architettura negli archivi siciliani: il palazzo della commenda Borgia e il palazzo della famiglia Borgia del Casale a Siracusa

2017

Two drawings made between the late 18th and early 19th century, represent two palaces located in the cathedral square in Syracuse. These are the plants on the main floor of the palace of the commenda Borgia and the palace of the Borgia del Casale family. Both drawings represent the state of conservation, the distribution of rooms, the boundaries and the properties of the two buildings. The drawings also indicate the intentions of the owners in the management of the building, through new purchases and a distribution of rooms functional to their possible location. All these indications, deduced from the drawings, show us the complexity of management of this type of buildings which had to be c…

Misure dello sguardo. Agrigento e la Valle dei Templi

2013

Agrigento, built on various morphological levels, in which the ancient city is set among the mountains, it was defined by poetical looks of eighteenth-century travellers. Stand out the temples, the regulars constructions, the obelisks and the elements belonging to the landscape of the mind. In the watercolours of travels, the charm of ruin, with its sublime traits, coexists with the dream of an harmonic Akragas, Greek city with an all ideal nature. The imaginative component of the Drawing, and it couldn’t be otherwise, tells about the subjective idea of the beauty through the “objectivity” of the ruins.

Eileen Gray: lo spirito plastico di un disegno sfuggente

2013

The article offers a study about the artistic and eccentric personality of Eileen Gray, the Irish designer and architect. An independent, elusive, secretive figure, that with her creative instinct absorbed the French capital becoming soon, between 1910 and 1920, one of the leading exponents of the new revolutionary theories on design and architecture. Her thoughts took shape through drawings and models with which assumed full control of the material used and her notes, strictly in French, supported the rigor and the harmony of her projects, which made it possible to define her one of the pioneers of the Modern Movement.

Simultaneità e alterazione. Forme e immagini di luce in narrazione visuale

2018

The article gives a …

La costruzione in fieri di un archivio privato

2022

A few years ago, from an idea born in 2015 on the occasion of a specific study on the professional activity of women architects in Palermo, Dacia and Sabina Di Cristina, daughters of the architect and university professor Luciana Natoli, born in 1936 and passed away too early, in 1978, at the age of 42, started to ‘build’ their mother’s archive. Natoli’s young age might suggest a modest size of the archive; in fact, the opposite is absolutely the case. It was in fact the sheer quantity of rolls, files, heliographic copies, drawings on tracing paper and sketch paper, photographs, correspondence, books and magazines that for so many years prevented her daughters from ordering this great mass …

Postfazione

2021

In 1933, Emil Kaufmann revealed the figure of Jean-Jacques Lequeu to a wider audience for the first time by publishing, in his Von Ledoux bis Le Corbusier, a number of drawings by the then almost unknown architect from Normandy to support the thesis, still debated today, that sees Claude-Nicolas Ledoux's "revolutionary" architecture as the origin of a natural line of sight which, starting from the purity of neoclassical forms, leads directly to the works of the masters of the modern movement. The afterword analyses Felice Romano's study of the Novelle Méthode.
