Genetic control of male cuticular hydrocarbons in Drosophila melanogaster

0016-6723 (Print) Comparative Study Journal Article; 7-tricosene (7-T) and 7-pentacosene (7-P) are the two main hydrocarbons on the cuticle of male Drosophila melanogaster. These two substances might play a pheromonal role during courtship behaviour. We investigated the genetic basis of the quantitative polymorphism observed in the production of 7-T and 7-P. Strains of different geographic origin, with males producing either predominantly 7-T or predominantly 7-P, were hybridized with strains carrying genetic markers. Genetic polymorphism and high detrimental load in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from cellar and vineyard

Two Spanish natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster have been analysed with respect to genetic variability in third chromosome viability. The two populations, although from the same locality, belong to relatively different habitats: the inside of a cellar and a vineyard. The patterns of homozygote and heterozygote viability are similar in both populations. Genetic elimination of known pheromones reveals the fundamental chemical bases of mating and isolation in Drosophila

Overexpression of the UAS-tra transgene in Drosophila melanogaster females led to the complete elimination of their cuticular pheromones. According to current models of Drosophila behavior, these flies should induce no courtship. In fact, they are still attractive to conspecific males. Three classes of stimuli are shown to induce courtship, with different effects on male behavior: ( i ) known pheromones produced by control females, ( ii ) stimuli produced by living control and transgenic flies, and ( iii ) as-yet-undetermined pheromones present on both control and transgenic flies. RADHA - a new male germ line-specific chromosomal protein of Drosophila

A new chromosomal protein - RADHA - of Drosophila is described that is specific for the male germ line. It is encoded by a single-copy gene, located in the region 96C-D of D. melanogaster polytene chromosomes. Transcription of the radha gene is restricted to the primary spermatocyte stage. The protein initially accumulates in some of the Y-chromosomal lampbrush loops. After meiosis it is found in the nuclei of spermatids and might be involved in chromatin rearrangement processes in the male germ line. RADHA is a basic protein with a C-terminal leucine zipper region and several segments capable of forming coiled-coil structures.
