Current Status on the Functional Characterization of Chemosensory Receptors of Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
2018
Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a major pest of apple, pear and walnuts. For its control, alternative strategies targeting the olfactory system, like mating disruption, have been combined with insecticide applications. The efficacy of these strategies headed the direction of efforts for the functional characterization of codling moth chemosensory receptors to implement further control methods based on chemical sensing. With the advent of transcriptomic analysis, partial and full-length coding sequences of chemosensory receptors have been identified in antennal transcriptomes of C. pomonella. Extension of partial coding sequences to full-length by polymerase chain reaction (PCR…

Karaistumisen ja lisääntymisdiapaussin vaikutukset Drosophila montana -mahlakärpästen kylmänkestävyyteen
2011
Increased autophagy and apoptosis contribute to muscle atrophy in a myotonic dystrophy type 1 Drosophila model
2015
ABSTRACT Muscle mass wasting is one of the most debilitating symptoms of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) disease, ultimately leading to immobility, respiratory defects, dysarthria, dysphagia and death in advanced stages of the disease. In order to study the molecular mechanisms leading to the degenerative loss of adult muscle tissue in DM1, we generated an inducible Drosophila model of expanded CTG trinucleotide repeat toxicity that resembles an adult-onset form of the disease. Heat-shock induced expression of 480 CUG repeats in adult flies resulted in a reduction in the area of the indirect flight muscles. In these model flies, reduction of muscle area was concomitant with increased apopto…
cis-regulatory variation modulates susceptibility to enteric infection in the Drosophila genetic reference panel
2020
Abstract Background Resistance to enteric pathogens is a complex trait at the crossroads of multiple biological processes. We have previously shown in the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) that resistance to infection is highly heritable, but our understanding of how the effects of genetic variants affect different molecular mechanisms to determine gut immunocompetence is still limited. Results To address this, we perform a systems genetics analysis of the gut transcriptomes from 38 DGRP lines that were orally infected with Pseudomonas entomophila. We identify a large number of condition-specific, expression quantitative trait loci (local-eQTLs) with infection-specific ones located …
Couch potato -kandidaattigeenissä esiintyvän mutaation vaikutus Drosophila montana -naaraiden lisääntymislepokauteen
2010
Diapaussi on fysiologinen lepotila, jonka aikana eliön elintoiminnot, kasvu ja kehitys hidastuvat ja ääriolosuhteiden, kuten alhaisten lämpötilojen ja kuivuuden, sietokyky paranee. Lisääntymislepokaudella tarkoitetaan aikuisilla hyönteisillä esiintyvää diapaussin muotoa, jonka aikana lisääntymiseen liittyvät toiminnot hidastuvat tai pysähtyvät kokonaan. Drosophila melanogaster -lajin lisääntymislepokauteen on liitetty useita kandidaattigeenejä, joista yksi on couch potato (cpo), ja tämän geenin yhteydestä lisääntymislepokauteen on saatu viitteitä myös pohjoisella D. montana -lajilla. Pro gradu -työssäni tarkasteltiin cpo-geenissä esiintyvän 19 emäsparin kokoisen deleetiomutaation yleisyyttä…
Data from: Postcopulatory sexual selection generates speciation phenotypes in Drosophila
2013
Background: Identifying traits that reproductively isolate species, and the selective forces underlying their divergence, is a central goal of evolutionary biology and speciation research. There is growing recognition that postcopulatory sexual selection, which can drive rapid diversification of interacting ejaculate and female reproductive tract traits that mediate sperm competition, may be an engine of speciation. Conspecific sperm precedence (CSP) is a taxonomically widespread form of reproductive isolation, but the selective causes and divergent traits responsible for CSP are poorly understood. Results: To test the hypothesis that postcopulatory sexual selection can generate reproductiv…

Data from: The genetic architecture of sexually selected traits in two natural populations of Drosophila montana
2015
We investigated the genetic architecture of courtship song and cuticular hydrocarbon traits in two phygenetically distinct populations of Drosophila montana. In order to study natural variation in these two important traits, we analysed within-population crosses among individuals sampled from the wild. Hence, the genetic variation analysed should represent that available for natural and sexual selection to act upon. In contrast to previous between-population crosses in this species, no major QTLs were detected, perhaps because the between-population QTL were due to fixed differences between the populations. Partitioning the trait variation to chromosomes suggested a broadly polygenic geneti…
Data from: Two distinct genomic regions, harbouring the period and fruitless genes, affect male courtship song in Drosophila montana
2011
Acoustic signals often play a significant role in pair formation and in species recognition. Determining the genetic basis of signal divergence will help to understand signal evolution by sexual selection and its role in the speciation process. An earlier study investigated QTL for male courtship song carrier frequency in Drosophila montana using microsatellite markers. We refined this study by adding to the linkage map markers for ten candidate genes known to affect song production in D. melanogaster. We also extended the analyses to additional song characters (pulse train length, pulse number, interpulse interval, pulse length and cycle number). Our results indicate that loci in two diffe…
