Transcriptomic profile of epileptic children treated with ketogenic therapies.

2022

Background: Ketogenic dietary therapies (KDT) are used as a treatment in childhood epilepsy. However, their mechanism has not yet been established. The main objective of this study was to determine the changes in the transcriptomic profile induced by KDT in children with epilepsy in order to shed light on its possible mechanisms. Methods: Eight children with refractory epilepsy were enrolled in the study. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were obtained before and after the children were treated with KDT for a minimum of 6 months. RNA was extracted and mRNA and miRNA profiling were performed and analyzed. Results: Our intervention with KDT significantly reduced the seizure number in seven o…

Ketogenic diet for infants with epilepsy: A literature review.

2020

Abstract The ketogenic diet (KD) is an established, nonpharmacological treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Actually, KD and its variants have been shown to be elective and resolute for patients with glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) deficiency. The aim of this review was to study the use of KD and its variants in infancy, including the neonatal age, and demonstrate the safety and efficacy of this treatment in patients with the age of 0–23 months affected by DRE already subjected to pharmacological approach attempts. A literature search was conducted using PubMed as the medical database source. We used the age limit of 0–23 months, and we considered only articles published between …

Enhanced terminal room disinfection and acquisition and infection caused by multidrug-resistant organisms and Clostridium difficile (the Benefits of …

2017

Summary Background Patients admitted to hospital can acquire multidrug-resistant organisms and Clostridium difficile from inadequately disinfected environmental surfaces. We determined the effect of three enhanced strategies for terminal room disinfection (disinfection of a room between occupying patients) on acquisition and infection due to meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , vancomycin-resistant enterococci, C difficile , and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter . Methods We did a pragmatic, cluster-randomised, crossover trial at nine hospitals in the southeastern USA. Rooms from which a patient with infection or colonisation with a target organism was discharged were terminally dis…

Prevention of nosocomial infections and surveillance of emerging resistances in NICU

2011

Neonates hospitalized in NICU are at risk for healthcare associated infections because of their poor immune defenses, related to gestational age, colonization of mucous membranes and skin with nosocomial microorganisms, exposure to antibiotics, invasive procedures and frequent contacts with healthcare workers (HCWs). Healthcare associated infections are the major source of morbidity and mortality in NICU in the developed world. Most infections are caused by Gram-positive organisms, fulminant sepsis are often associated to Gram-negative organisms, fungal sepsis occurs frequently in ELBW infants. Hand hygiene is the most important preventive procedure, nevertheless hand hygiene compliance amo…

In vitro activities of tetracyclines against different clones of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from two Iranian hospitals.

2014

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as one of the most challenging healthcare-related pathogens and its occurrence has increased worldwide, especially in patients admitted to intensive care units. A. baumannii isolates are frequently resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents and there are recent reports of isolates resistant to virtually all clinically relevant drugs. In the present study, the in vitro activities of tigecycline, minocycline and doxycycline against 67 MDR-AB isolates recovered from 29 burn and 38 non-burn Iranian patients hospitalised in Tehran and Tabriz, respectively, were studied. Tigecycline and minocycline may be still considered effective therapeutic options for MDR-A…

Antimicrobial activity of essential oil ofArtemisia judaicaL. from Algeria against multi-drug resistant bacteria from clinical origin

2015

Artemisia judaica L. essential oil was studied for antibacterial activity against various clinical isolates of bacteria resistant to a number of antibiotics. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against 20 multidrug resistant (MDR) of clinical origin compared to standard ATCC strains. The strains that showed resistance against the maximum number of antibiotics tested were selected for an antibacterial assay by three methods: Disc diffusion method, microatmosphere and dilution method. The obtained results demonstrated that the A. judaica essential oil possessed an excellent inhibitory effect against all of the tested strains. The most potent results were obtained against MRSA (Methicilli…

Surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, multidrug-resistant Gram-negatives and fungi colonization in the Neonatal Intensive Care…

2015

Introduction Multidrug-resistant organisms are a serious public health problem, particularly in critical hospital wards such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Hospitalized neonates are at high risk for healthcare-associated infections leading to higher morbidity and mortality rates, because of their poor immune defences, frequent exposure to antibiotics, invasive procedures and contacts with healthcare-workers. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant Gram-negatives (MDRGNs) and fungi in the five NICUs of the city of Palermo. Methods From February 2014 to January 2015, an active surveill…
