The question of the subject of sentiments in Descartes' dualism

2014

The goal of this thesis is to address the question of what would be the subject of the predicates that denote sentiments in Descartes’ writings. The proposed hypothesis is that substances can only be regarded as « the ultimate subjects of inherence » of these predicates. Nevertheless, it will be argued that men and animals, although they are not substances, may be considered the « subjects of attribution » of such predicates, since they have a specific unit, namely, a « unity of composition », which ensures that attribution. Therefore, the thesis will be developed in three main axes. From an examination of the Cartesian theory of substance and its definitions, we analyze the concept of exte…

Profiles of Parental Burnout Around the Globe : Similarities and Differences Across 36 Countries

2023

Parental burnout (PB) is a pervasive phenomenon. Parenting is embedded in cultural values, and previous research has shown the role of individualism in PB. In this paper, we reanalyze previously collected data to identify profiles based on the four dimensions of PB, and explore whether these profiles vary across countries’ levels of collectivistic-individualistic (COL-IND) values. Our sample comprised 16,885 individuals from 36 countries (73% women; 27% men), and we used a latent profile approach to uncover PB profiles. The findings showed five profiles: Fulfilled, Not in PB, Low risk of PB, High risk of PB and Burned out. The profiles pointed to climbing levels of PB in the total sample an…

Enamel Prism Patterns of European Hominoids — and Their Phylogenetical Aspects

1981

Everybody concerned with questions of taxonomy and phylogeny knows that a large part of information used to classify fossil vertebrates is derived from teeth. This comes from the reasoning that teeth are the best mineralized portions of the skeleton and thus usually also the best preserved remains. The best preserved portion of teeth is again the most highly mineralized — the enamel. That the enamel shows a so-called prism pattern, which differs markedly within mammals and also within the primates, is well known since Carter (1922) and Regan (1930) published articles concerning the variability of enamel prism patterns. These were for the first time described by Tomes in 1848. An intensive i…

A learning model for the dual evolution of human social behaviors

2003

In this work we modelize, with an abstract mathematical model by computer simulation, the processes that have made to appear in the world a strong duality between orient and occident, by combining changes in conditions of initialization, natural system and the opposition gregarious/individualism of the social behaviors. Finally we present a statistical study of the influence of the repression adaptability, resignation and recycling on the ecological destruction and social evolution. This model can help us to analyze if the current capitalist globalization can be stopped, changed or regulated, and if it is possible to overcome it towards a Free Scientific Society.

The nail that sticks out : the practice of individuality in the East Asian classroom

2015
