Optical modeling of nickel-base alloys oxidized in pressurized water reactor
2012
International audience; The knowledge of the aging process involved in the primary water of pressurized water reactor entails investigating a mixed growth mechanism in the corrosion of nickel-base alloys. A mixed growth induces an anionic inner oxide and a cationic diffusion parallel to a dissolution-precipitation process forms the outer zone. The in situ monitoring of the oxidation kinetics requires the modeling of the oxide layer stratification with the full knowledge of the optical constants related to each component. Here, we report the dielectric constants of the alloys 600 and 690 measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry and fitted to a Drude-Lorentz model. A robust optical stratificati…
Passive Behavior and Passivity Breakdown of AISI 304 in LiBr Solutions through Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy
2014
The passive behavior and passivity breakdown of AISI 304 stainless steel in LiBr solutions has been investigated by means of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The sample generation - tip collection (SG-TC) mode was used to operate the SECM and the tip potential was biased to detect the electroactive species. The evolution of the current at the ultramicroelectrode tip with the applied potential within the passive range was followed at different LiBr concentrations. Results show that the absolute value of the current at the tip increases with the applied potential. Additionally, SECM was also used to detect stable pits formed on the stainless steel surface in a 0.2 M LiBr solution. …
Resource allocation for OFDMA systems with multi-cell joint transmission
2012
This paper considers the downlink resource allocation of a coordinated multi-cell cluster in OFDMA systems with universal frequency reuse. Multi-cell joint transmission is considered via zero-forcing precoding. Furthermore, joint optimization of the user selection and power allocation across multiple subchannels and multiple cells is studied. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate under per-base-station power constraints. Based on general duality theory, two iterative resource allocation algorithms are proposed and compared with the optimal solution, which requires an exhaustive search of all possible combinations of users over all subchannels. Simulation results show that the t…
Combined K-Best sphere decoder based on the channel matrix condition number
2008
It is known that sphere decoding (SD) methods can provide maximum-likelihood (ML) detection over Gaussian MIMO channels with lower complexity than the exhaustive search. Channel matrix condition number represents an important influence on the performance of usual detectors. Throughout this paper, two particular cases of a SD method called K-Best carry out a combined detection in order to reduce the computational complexity with predictable performance degradation. Algorithm selection is based on channel matrix condition number thresholding. K-Best is a suboptimal SD algorithm for finding the ML solution of a detection problem. It is based on a fixed complexity tree search, set by a paramete…
Pareto-optimal Glowworm Swarms Optimization for Smart Grids Management
2013
This paper presents a novel nature-inspired multi-objective optimization algorithm. The method extends the glowworm swarm particles optimization algorithm with algorithmical enhancements which allow to identify optimal pareto front in the objectives space. In addition, the system allows to specify constraining functions which are needed in practical applications. The framework has been applied to the power dispatch problem of distribution systems including Distributed Energy Resources (DER). Results for the test cases are reported and discussed elucidating both numerical and complexity analysis.
Calculation of cost-optimal combination of building materials and technical systems for nZEB single-family house using global cost calculation method
2019
As a rule, during the design stage of a single-family house, only initial costs are taken into account and optimised. Long-term financial calculations are usually not even made. At the same time, total costs to design, build and operate the building show a real difference in expenses while living in this house. In the case of nearly zero energy buildings (nZEBs), this global cost approach becomes especially useful because of the strict requirements of heating and primary energy, as well as the compulsory use of renewable energy sources, requiring more detailed and comprehensive calculations of a cost-optimal set of solutions. In this study, a nZEB single-family house is analysed in detail u…
Predicting sediment deposition rate in check-dams using machine learning techniques and high-resolution DEMs
2021
Sediments accumulated in check dams are a valuable measure to estimate soil erosion rates. Here, geographic information systems (GIS) and three machine learning techniques (MARS-multivariate adaptive regression splines, RF-random forest and SVM-support vector machine) were used, for the first time, to predict sediment deposition rate (SR) in check-dams located in six watersheds in SW Spain. There, 160 dry-stone check dams (~ 77.8 check-dams km−2), accumulated sediments during a period that varied from 11 to 23 years. The SR was estimated in former research using a topographical method and a high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) (average of 0.14 m3 ha−1 year−1). Nine environmental-to…
A coupled plasticity-damage cohesive-frictional interface for low-cycle fatigue analysis
2022
A novel thermodynamically consistent cohesive-frictional model for the analysis of interface degradation and failure under either monotonic quasi-static loading or cyclic loading in low-cycle fatigue problems is proposed. Starting from the definition of a suitable Helmholtz energy density function, a phenomenological interface model is developed in the framework of plasticity and damage mechanics. In particular, a coupled plasticitydamage activation function is defined and employed together the consistent evolution rules to capture the evolution of damage and plasticity under the action of the external loads. Due to the specific features of such threshold and flow rules, the initiation and …
Default Mode Network Efficiency Is Correlated With Deficits in Inhibition in Adolescents With Inhalant Use Disorder
2020
It is well established that alterations in cognitive function and damage to brain structures are often found in adolescents who have substance use disorder (SUD). However, deficits in executive cognitive functioning in adolescents related to the vulnerability and consumption of such substances are not well known. In this study, we use graph theoretic analysis to compare the network efficiency in the resting state for three networks---default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN) and fronto-parietal network (FPN)---between inhalant-consuming adolescents and a control group (12 to 17 years old). We analysed whether the efficiency of these functional networks was related to working memory,…
Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin in the management of ovarian cancer
2014
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological tumors. Carboplatin/paclitaxel represents the cornerstone of front-line treatment. Instead, there is no consensus for management of recurrent/progressive disease, in which pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) ± carboplatin is widely used. We performed a systematic review and metaanalysis to evaluate impact of PLD-based compared with no-PLD-based regimens in the ovarian cancer treatment. Data were extracted from randomized trials comparing PLD-based treatment to any other regimens in the January 2000-January 2013 time-frame. Study end-points were overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), response rate (RR), CA125…
