Selecting students for medical school: What predicts success during basic science studies? A cognitive approach

This study focuses on differences between multiple-choice science tests and a learning-from-text (LFT) test, and how these tests predict success in basic medical studies. The subjects (N = 503) were applicants to the Helsinki University Medical Faculty. All of them had to take an entrance examination in order to be considered for admission to a 6-year study programme combining medical school and graduate studies. The entrance examination consisted of three traditional multiple-choice science tests and one LFT test, the latter designed to measure deep-level processing of text. A comprehensive comparison between halophilic granular and flocculent sludge in withstanding short and long-term salinity fluctuations

The effects of salinity fluctuations on the activity of autochthonous halophilic bacteria in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and flocculent activated sludge (FAS) reactors were investigated. The response of nitrifiers and denitrifiers activity to drastic and moderate salinity shocks in the short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) was examined. The BOD5removal efficiency decreased only in the reactors subjected to the drastic LT salinity increase. Nevertheless, stable performances were achieved 18 days after the shock in the AGS-R1 (90%), whereas after 27 days in the FAS-R1 (82%). In energy production, peat extraction has a significant role in Finland. However, protection of nature has become more and more important globally. How do we solve this conflict of interests respecting both views? In peat production, one important phase is to drain peat bog so that peat production becomes available. This means that we have control over how we can lead water away from peat bog to nature without water contamination with solid and other harmful substances. In this paper we describe a novel method how fouling of water bodies from peat bog can be controlled more efficiently by using weather forecast to predict rainfall and thus, minimize the effluents to nature. peerReviewed

Given a large population of agents, each agent has three possiblechoices between option 1 or 2 or no option. The two options are equally favorable and the population has to reach consensus on one of the two options quickly and in a distributed way. AbstractFringe projection is a versatile method for mapping the topography of surfaces. In this paper, it is used to measure the defects on the head of railroad rails while the rails are moving. Railroad rails are made by hot rolling. The quality of the finished product is generally good, but surface texture will deteriorate with increasing temperature. A method for online inspection therefore is very desirable. In the present experiment, dimensional inspection of the railroad rails was made online while moving at a speed of 1–2 m/s. Estimation of Sway-angle Based on Hybrid State Observer Using Continuous and Discrete Sensing

A hybrid state observer design is presented herein to estimate sway-angle and angular velocity in trolley systems with pendulum. In general, anti-sway control for trolley systems with pendulum such as overhead cranes are designed based on sway-angle signals detected by angular sensors. Opposed to that, a state observer without those sensors is proposed to estimate the sway-angle of the pendulum. A standard linear continuous feedback observer causes estimation error owing to the system nonlinearity and modeling error.
