Biomarker testing of lung cancer in Spain

2019

Abstract Background Target therapy guide by biomarkers have become the standard of care for patients with lung cancer (LC). So, identify those molecular alterations is one of the most important care needs nowdays. Our objective was to know the implementation degree of these tests in a large cohort of patients in Spain using the Thoracic Tumor Registry (TTR) of the Grupo Espanol de Cancer de Pulmon (Spanish Lung Cancer Group). Methods The TTR is an observational cohort multicenter study of LC in Spain. The study is conducted according to the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the institutional review board of each participating institute. The registry was approved by the Spanish Drug Ag…

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease

2014

Epidemiological and biological evidences support a link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Persons with diabetes have a higher incidence of cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing all types of dementia. Cognitive deficits in persons with diabetes mainly affect the areas of psychomotor efficiency, attention, learning and memory, mental flexibility and speed, and executive function. The strong epidemiological association has suggested the existence of a physiopathological link. The determinants of the accelerated cognitive decline in DM2, however, are less clear. Increased cortical and subcortical atrophy have been evidenced after controlling fo…

Diabetes and Dementia

2015

Persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) have an increased incidence of cognitive decline and dementia. An increased cortical and subcortical atrophy has been found after controlling for vascular disease and inadequate cerebral circulation. A possible role of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia has been suggested to mediate the link between DM2 and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Altered insulin signaling may contribute to AD biochemical and histopathological lesions. Both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia may contribute to cognitive decline in DM2. Recurrent symptomatic and asymptomatic hypoglycemic episodes have been suggested to cause subclinical brain damage, and permanent cognitive impai…

Tobacco use in lung cancer (LC) patients (p) in Spain

2019

Abstract Background Tobacco use, mainly as cigarette smoking, is the leading cause of lung cancer. Eighty-five percent of LC occur in smokers. Understanding the Spanish smoking habits allows the government to design health care policies against this consumption. To do so, the Grupo Espanol de Cancer de Pulmon (Spanish Lung Cancer Group) made this analysis within the context of the Thoracic Tumor Registry (TTR). Methods The TTR is an observational cohort multicenter study in Spain. The study is conducted according to the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the institutional review board of each participating site. The registry was approved by the Spanish Drug Agency, as a non-post-author…

The Role of Asymptomatic Individuals in the COVID-19 Pandemic via Complex Networks

2020

Background: Recent seroprevalence studies have tried to estimate the real number of asymptomatic cases affected by COVID-19. It is of paramount importance to understand the impact of these infections in order to prevent a second wave. This study aims to model the interactions in the population by means of a complex network and to shed some light on the effectiveness of localised control measures in Italy in relation to the school opening in mid-September.} Methods: The formulation of an epidemiological predictive model is given: the advantage of using this model lies in that it discriminates between asymptomatic and symptomatic cases of COVID-19 as the interactions with these two categorie…

The GALAD Score as Potential Screening Test for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis: An International Multicenter Study

2019

The prevalence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is rising rapidly and is currently the most common chronic liver disease in Western populations. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major complication of NASH and the current performance of screening approaches based on ultrasound shows limitations. To facilitate earlier diagnosis, this international multicenter study, with eight German and one Japanese center participating, tests the potential benefit of applying the biomarkers AFP, AFP-L3, DCP and related scores for HCC screening in NASH patients. In the retrospective German cohort, 126 NASH patients with newly diagnosed HCC and 231 NASH control patients without HCC were enrolled. In …

Molecular endoscopic imaging: the future is bright

2019

The prediction and final survival rate of gastrointestinal cancers are dependent on the stage of disease. The ideal would be to detect those gastrointestinal lesions at early stage or even premalignant forms which are difficult to detect by conventional endoscopy with white light optical imaging as they show minimum or no changes in morphological characteristics and are thus left untreated. The introduction of molecular imaging has greatly changed the pattern for detecting gastrointestinal lesions from purely macroscopic structural imaging to the molecular level. It allows microscopic examination of the gastrointestinal mucosa with endoscopy after the topical or systemic application of mol…

Use of statins and the risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2018

AbstractWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate whether the use of statins could be associated with the risk of all-caused dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Major electronic databases were searched until December 27th, 2017 for studies investigating use of statins and incident cognitive decline in adults. Random-effects meta-analyses calculating relative risks (RRs) were conducted to synthesize effect sizes of individual studies. Twenty-five studies met eligibility criteria. Use of statins was significantly associated with a reduced risk of all-caused dementia (k = 16 studies, adjusted RR (aRR) = 0.849…

Pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy dietary behavior in relation to maternal and newborn health in the Norwegian Fit for Delivery study – a post hoc ob…

2018

Background Randomized controlled trials targeting maternal dietary and physical activity behaviors during pregnancy have generally failed to accomplish reductions in the prevalence of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Interventions carried out during pregnancy could thus be missing the mark in maximizing intervention health benefit. Objective To investigate whether pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy dietary behavior as reported at inclusion into the Norwegian Fit for Delivery (NFFD) trial was associated with maternal and neonatal outcomes irrespective of subsequent randomization assignment. Design The study is a post-hoc observational analysis of data from a randomized controlled lifes…
