Cognitive Responses to Populist Communication

2019

This chapter investigates the cognitive effects of different populist messages on blame attributions and stereotyping in the 15 countries participating in the study. It first gives an overview about whether respondents blamed politicians, the wealthy, immigrants, or ordinary people for the future economic decline described in the experimental stimulus. In addition, general stereotypical perceptions of those groups among respondents are presented. With respect to populist message effects, the analyses show that these were generally rather weak. But the analyses were also able to show that left-wing anti-out-group cues blaming ‘the rich’ and economic elites were most influential in this exper…

Severe hypoglycemia is associated with antidiabetic oral treatment compared with insulin analogs in nursing home patients with type 2 diabetes and de…

2015

Abstract Objectives Severe hypoglycemia is associated with cognitive decline and dementia in older persons with type 2 diabetes. The role of antidiabetic treatments on severe hypoglycemia is unknown in dementia. The aims were to determine the prevalence of severe hypoglycemic events and investigate associations among severe hypoglycemic and specific antidiabetic treatments (classes of oral agents and types of insulin analogs) in a large sample of nursing home patients with diabetes according to dementia status. Design Cross-sectional observational study. Setting A total of 150 nursing homes across Italy. Participants A total of 2258 patients with type 2 diabetes (dementia = 1138, no dementi…

COX-1/COX-2 inhibitors based on the methanone moiety

2002

This paper focuses on the synthesis and the in vitro testing of dual COX-1/COX-2 inhibitors. Starting from structures of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) the diaryl methanone element was chosen as a lead. Modifications were carried out on this scaffold to obtain potent inhibitors of the COX enzymes. The N-(2-aroylphenyl)sulphonamides and -amides were studied in detail, and to consolidate the data evaluated the corresponding 3- and 4-regioisomers were also investigated. The potency and the enzyme selectivity were varied by structural modifications of the lead.

In-vitro test system for the evaluation of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors based on a single HPLC run with UV detect…

2001

Objective and Design: The aim of this study was to develop a new, whole-cell test system which is easy to handle and requires a standard equipment for the parallel screening of COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors.¶Materials: Bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs).¶Treatment and methods: Unstimulated bovine aortic coronary endothelial cells (BAECs) were used as a source of COX-1 and BAECs pretreated with ASA (100 μM) and activated with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) were used as a source of COX-2. The time- and concentration-dependent induction of COX-2 expression in the BAECs was evaluated by a kinetic profile (HPLC analysis) and detected by Western-Blot analysis using polyclonal antibodies agains…

Coeval high-pressure metamorphism, thrusting, strike-slip, and extensional shearing in the Tauern Window, Eastern Alps

2008

[1] Recent findings for a young (31.5 ± 0.7 Ma) age of high-pressure metamorphism at ∼90 km depths in the Eclogite Zone of the Tauern Window, Eastern Alps, prompt the question about the timing of the structural development of the Tauern Window and its relation to high-pressure metamorphism. We show that all major structures in the Tauern Window, resulting from strong N-S lithospheric shortening and simultaneous minor E-W extension, began developing coevally with high-pressure metamorphism in the Eclogite Zone. Large-scale strike-slip shear zones started to form at ∼32–30 Ma and facilitated the spatial accommodation of simultaneous shortening and extension. At least some of the strike-slip a…

Omphacite textures in eclogites of the Tauern Window: Implications for the exhumation of the Eclogite Zone, Eastern Alps

2008

Abstract We discuss the relationship of omphacite lattice preferred orientation (LPO) patterns in eclogite and kinematic indicators in the matrix surrounding the eclogite during the very rapid exhumation of the deeply buried Eclogite Zone in the Tauern Window of the Eastern Alps. LPO patterns are presented from profiles parallel to the eclogite stretching lineation across the Eclogite Zone. The omphacite textures show symmetric patterns across the entire Eclogite Zone; only in few cases slight asymmetries are observed. The patterns are characterized by an alignment of {110} with the foliation and a maximum of 〈001〉 close to the lineation and are indicative of deformation by intracrystalline…

Horizontal contraction or horizontal extension? Heterogeneous Late Eocene and early Oligocene general shearing during blueschist and greenschist faci…

1995

Mylonitic structures related to two orogenic events are described from the upper and lower contacts of the Combin zone and the immediately overlying upper Austroalpine Dent Blanche nappe/Mont Mary klippe and the directly underlying lower Austroalpine Etirol-Levaz slice. The first event, Late Eocene in age, commenced during blueschist facies P-T conditions, but pre-dated the peak of subsequent greenschist facies overprint. The second event, Early Oligocene in age, took place during retrograde greenschist facies conditions. Most sense of shear indicators associated with the retrograde mylonites indicate top SE shearing, but subordinate top NW displacing shear sense indicators have also been m…

From intra-oceanic subduction to arc accretion and arc-continent collision: Insights from the structural evolution of the Río San Juan metamorphic co…

2013

The Río San Juan metamorphic complex exposes a segment of a high-pressure subduction-accretionary complex built during Caribbean island arc-North America continental margin convergence. It is composed of accreted arc- and oceanic-derived metaigneous rocks, serpentinized peridotites and minor metasediments forming a structural pile. Combined detailed mapping, structural and metamorphic analysis, and geochronology show that the deformation can be divided into five main events (D1eD5). An early subduction-related D1 deformation and M1 metamorphism produced greenschist (mafic rocks of the Gaspar Hernández peridotite-tectonite), blueschist and eclogite (metamafic blocks in the Jagua Clara mélang…

DMAP-BODIPY Alkynes: A Convenient Tool for Labeling Biomolecules for Bimodal PET-Optical Imaging

2014

Several new boron dipyrromethene/N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (BODIPY-DMAP) assemblies were synthesized as precursors for bimodal imaging probes (optical imaging, OI/positron emission tomography, PET). The photophysical properties of the new compounds were also studied. The first proof-of-concept was obtained with the preparation of several new BODIPY-labeled bombesins and evaluation of the affinity for bombesin receptors by using a competition binding assay. Fluorination reactions were investigated on DMAP-BODIPY precursors as well as on DMAP-BODIPY-labeled bombesins. Chemical modifications on the BODIPY core were also performed to obtain luminescent dyes emitting in the therapeutic window (6…

DISTRIBUTION OF BOTRYOSPHAERIACEAE SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH GRAPEVINE DECLINE IN WESTERN SICILY.

2011

Recently, the pathogenicity of different Botryosphaeraceae species on grapevines has been reported from many European and extra-European areas. During summer 2008, in a Sicilian vineyard located in the Marsala area (TP), we observed a decline induced by Lasiodiplodia theobromae. The occurrence and quite rapid spread of the disease seemed to support the regional variability of the species in question, which is retained a tropical and subtropical pathogen to different trees. In the last two years, the decline syndrome has been observed in the following other grape-growing areas of western and central Sicily: Alcamo and Salemi (TP), Montevago (AG) and Milena (CL). From declining plants showing…
