Effects of clozapine metabolites and chronic clozapine treatment on rat brain GABAA receptors

1996

Abstract Similarly to clozapine, a clozapine metabolite, N -desmethylclozapine, but not clozapine N -oxide, antagonized brain γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A ) receptors at high micromolar concentrations. However, daily subcutaneous injections of clozapine (10 and 25 mg/kg) and haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg) for 14 days failed to alter the modulation by GABA of rat cerebrocortical and cerebellar benzodiazepine ([ 3 H]flunitrazepam) or convulsant ( t -[ 35 S]bicyclophosphorothionate) binding sites of the GABA A receptor. The results thus suggest that the GABA A receptor antagonism exerted by chronic in vivo clozapine treatment is weak as compared to this treatment's actions on certain monoamine …

Irradiation of the head reduces adult hippocampal neurogenesis and impairs spatial memory, but leaves overall health intact in rats.

2021

Treatment of brain cancer, glioma, can cause cognitive impairment as a side‐effect, possibly because it disrupts the integrity of the hippocampus, a structure vital for normal memory. Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat glioma, but the effects of irradiation on the brain are still poorly understood, and other biological effects have not been extensively studied. Here we exposed healthy adult male rats to small and moderate‐dose irradiation of the head. We found no effect of irradiation on systemic inflammation, weight gain or gut microbiota diversity, although it increased the abundance of Bacteroidaceae family, namely Bacteroides genus in the gut microbiota. Irradiation had no effect on…

When the amnestic mild cognitive impairment disappears: characterisation of the memory profile

2009

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Subjects affected by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may improve during the observation period. This is the first study investigating qualitative features of memory deficits in subjects affected by reversible MCI [reversible cognitive impairment (RCI)]. METHODS: Baseline cognitive and memory performances of 18 subjects affected by amnestic MCI who had normalized cognitive performances at follow-ups were compared with those of 76 amnestic MCI subjects who still showed impaired cognitive performances at the 24-month follow-up (MCI) and with those of a group of 87 matched control subjects (normal controls). RESULTS: Compared with normal controls the memory deficit in the…

Distinct Roles of Classical and Lectin Pathways of Complement in Preeclamptic Placentae

2022

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by defective vascular remodeling in maternal decidua responsible for reduced blood flow leading to functional and structural alterations in the placenta. We have investigated the contribution of the complement system to decidual vascular changes and showed that trophoblasts surrounding unremodeled vessels prevalent in preeclamptic decidua fail to express C1q that are clearly detected in cells around remodeled vessels predominant in control placenta. The critical role of C1q is supported by the finding that decidual trophoblasts of femaleC1qa-/-pregnant mice mated toC1qa+/+male mice surrounding remodeled vessels express C1q of paternal …

Perceived determinants of physical activity among women with prior severe preeclampsia: a qualitative assessment.

2022

Abstract Background The objective of this study was to (1) qualitatively identify the perceived determinants of physical activity among women who have experienced severe preeclampsia, and (2) examine whether these determinants are consistent with the overarching processes outlined in the integrated behavior change (IBC) model, a novel model that describes physical activity as being a result of motivational, volitional, and automatic processes. Methods Patients (n = 35) of the Follow-Up PreEClampsia (FUPEC) Outpatient Clinic, Erasmus MC, the Netherlands, participated in an anonymous online survey. The main outcomes under study were their perceived determinants of physical activity. Responses…

A possible tool for the choice of building materials: the environmental product declaration (EPD)

2019

The paper, contribution to the international debate on the environmental matter, deals with a tool that can guide professionals and the users in choosing low environmental impact building materials with similar functional requirements, the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or Type III Environmental Label, by highlighting strengths and limitations. The paper, besides describing the characteristics and contents of the EPDs and Product Category Rules (PCR), lists the main European EPD Programmes, analyzing two EPDs models in order to verify the comparability of the listed LCA data.

Nano-inclusion suite and high resolution micro-computed-tomography of polycrystalline diamond (framesite) from Orapa, Botswana

2011

Abstract A single polycrystalline diamond aggregate from the Orapa kimberlite (Botswana) contains a syngenetic micro- and nano-inclusion suite of magnetite, pyrrhotite, omphacite, garnet, rutile and C–O–H fluid in order of abundance. This suite of inclusions is distinctly different from those in fibrous diamonds, although the presence of sub-micrometer fluid inclusions provides evidence for a similarly important role of fluids in the genesis of polycrystalline diamond. It is the first study of polycrystalline diamond by High resolution μ-CT (Computed Tomography) reaching a resolution of 1.3 μm using polychromatic X-rays. Combined with Focused Ion Beam assisted Transmission Electron Microsco…

Linear viscoelastic properties of high reclaimed asphalt content mixes with biobinders

2017

The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content mixtures together with binders produced from renewable resources (biobinders) is one of the current challenges in pavement engineering research. On the one hand, RA has been used for decades, but there are still some concerns about its performance, especially when high contents are used (>30%). On the other hand, biobinders are relatively new materials, which have to be deeply characterised and studied in order to develop good practices for their use. In this paper, linear viscoelastic properties of biobinders and bio-mixtures manufactured with high RA content and biobinders are analysed and discussed. High-modulus mixtures with 50% RA were…

Drug release from alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide-based microparticles.

2004

Abstract Spherical pH-sensitive microparticles have been prepared by reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. Starting polymer has been α , β -poly( N -2-hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) has been crosslinked in the presence of acrylic acid (AA) or methacrylic acid (MA) at various concentration. The obtained microparticles have been characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometry, particle size distribution analysis and scanning electron microscopy. In order to have information about water affinity of the prepared samples, swelling measurements have been carried out in aqueous media which simulate some bi…
