Analysis of runs of homozygosity of cattle living in different climate zones

Abstract Aim of this study was to analyze the distribution and characteristics of runs of homozygosity in Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus breeds, as well as their crosses, farmed all around the world. With this aim in view, we used single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) genotypes for 3,263 cattle belonging to 204 different breeds. After quality control, 23,311 SNPs were retained for the analysis. A book of the Indian spiritual master Jddu Krishnamurti (Education and the Significance of life), translated in 1958 by Aldo Visalberghi and published by La Nuova Italia, contained anti-educational and provocative proposals unrelated to the interests of the pedagogists. There was, by the academic world, a timid curiosity about the critical and polemical elements of the Krishnamurtian philosophy, that ignored or misunderstood the new and original conception of the school, that pedagogy can now reconsiders for a critic reflection about the new educational emergencies.

Abstract We studied field performance of containerised Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies seedlings of different provenances. Shoot height, needle chemical composition, root collar diameter, root mycorrhization and mycorrhizal species composition were evaluated after four growing seasons following outplanting. The results showed that in general spruce had better survival than pine. Ectomycorrhizas on spruce were dominated by Wilcoxina, Amphinema and Tylospora, while on pine — by Suillus and Thelephora species. Dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) plays an important ecological role in the thermo Mediterranean vegetation stage, both in woodlands, xerophitic shrub communities and degraded ecosystems. Dwarf fan palm is typically propagated from seeds. Whereas other palm species show reduced germination after few months of seed storage, no information is available on the effects of storage time on seed germinability . Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei is an endemic species of the north-west of Sicily located in an 84 ha area in the Madonie Regional park. The current population is limited to 30 relic adult trees and a fluctuating number of juveniles of natural regeneration. The species is defined as “Critically Endangered” in the Italian list of threatened plants and is classified as CR-D in the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This article reports the key action undertaken by the LIFE4FIR project aimed at preserving A. nebrodensis, and the results obtained so far in three years of activity. En ambients halòfils de clima mediterrani com els localitzats en el litoral sud alacantí, l’ecofisiologia de la germinació és afectada essencialment pel dèficit hídric estacional, les elevades temperatures i les propietats del sòl. En aquest marc d’irregularitat ambiental, s’establí la resposta de germinació integrada en el cicle vital de l’espècie herbàcia halòfita Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum L. per tal d’avançar en el coneixement del funcionament d’aquests ambients salins i així poder abordar futurs programes de conservació vegetal en praderies salines.
