Preliminary results on antimicrobial activity of Rhynchophorous ferrugineus hemolymph
2011
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), known as the Red Palm Weevil (RPW) and accidentally introduced in the Mediterranean areas, is considered a quarantine pest for tree palms especially in the urban environment. In order to understand the relationship among potential pathogens and RPW several studies were carried out on RPW immune system. Here we report the results of a preliminary study undertaken to investigate the effect of naturally occurring antimicrobial activities present both in the cell free hemolymph and in hemocytes lysate supernatant of RPW. The hemolymph was extracted from the older larvae sampled from infested palm trees. The protein fractions were extracted …
Fungi related to larvae of red palm weevil Rhynchophorous ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)
2010
As a first step to developing effective biocontrol strategies, we analyzed the pathogens and mainly the entomopathogenic fungal species, present into dead larvae of Rhynchophorous ferrugineus; a quarantine pest recently introduced and acclimated in Sicily (Italy). From 2008 to 2010, we estimated the natural larval mortality (> second instar) of R. ferrugineus collected from infested palm Phoenix canariensis; that was variable from 10 to 35%, according to the different seasons Among the different pathogens recorded the fungi seems have an important role, than in order to distinguish saprophytic or opportunistic species from potential pathogens (including the non cultivable ones) we applied d…

Massive presence of insertion sequences in the genome of SOPE, the primary endosymbiont of the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae
2008
Bacteria that establish an obligate intracellular relationship with eukaryotic hosts undergo an evolutionary genomic reductive process. Recent studies have shown an increase in the number of mobile elements in the first stage of the adaptive process towards intracellular life, although these elements are absent in ancient endosymbionts. Here, the genome of SOPE, the obligate mutualistic endosymbiont of rice weevils, was used as a model to analyze the initial events that occur after symbiotic integration. During the first phases of the SOPE genome project, four different types of insertion sequence (IS) elements, belonging to well-characterized IS families from γ-proteobacteria, were identif…

Narrow Bound States of the DNN System
2012
We report on a recent calculation of the properties of the $DNN$ system, a charmed meson with two nucleons. The system is analogous to the $\bar K NN$ system substituting a strange quark by a charm quark. Two different methods are used to evaluate the binding and width, the Fixed Center approximation to the Faddeev equations and a variational calculation. In both methods we find that the system is bound by about 200 MeV and the width is smaller than 40 MeV, a situation opposite to the one of the $\bar K NN$ system and which makes this state well suited for experimental observation.
Andreev Reflection at Point Contacts with Heavy-FermionUBe13?
2000
We comment on a recent Letter by Waelti et al. (PRL 84, 5616 (2000)) on 'Spectroscopic evidence for unconventional superconductivity in UBe13'. We show - by using the basic Wexler formula - that it is unlikely to observe Andreev reflection at point contacts between UBe13 and a normal metal. The large superconducting anomalies usually found for those contacts are mainly due to the resistive Maxwell resistance vanishing below Tc of UBe13.
Nonlocal pure spin current injection via quantum pumping and crossed Andreev reflection
2005
A pure spin current injector is proposed based on adiabatic pumping and crossed normal/Andreev reflection. The device consists of a three-terminal ferromagnet-superconductor-semiconductor system in which the injection of a pure spin current is into the semiconductor which is coupled to the superconductor within a coherence length away from the ferromagnet enabling the phenomena of crossed normal /Andreev reflection to operate. Quantum pumping is induced by adiabatically modulating two independent parameters of the ferromagnetic lead, namely the magnetization strength and the strength of coupling between the ferromagnet and the superconductor. The competition between the normal/Andreev refle…

This essay analyzes John Cheever's's novel "The Wapshot Chronicle" (1957) its critical reception from presentation to the present day,the historical context of its production and reception and its enduring significance.
Behaviour-modifying compounds for management of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliver).
2014
BACKGROUND: Populations of red palm weevil (RPW), a severe pest of palms in Mediterranean countries, might be limited by semiochemical-based behaviour-disrupting methods. We evaluated the effects of electroantennogram (EAG)-active plant volatiles on the behaviour of RPWs from Italy and Israel. In field experiments, α-pinene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and 1-octen-3-ol were tested for their ability to disrupt attraction to pheromone-kairomone and molasses baited traps. Those that were found to be disruptive in the field were evaluated in a laboratory choice bioassay in individual cages for their effect on RPW female feeding and oviposition. RESULTS: Field experiments showed reduced captur…
