Abstract The photovoltaic sector in Italy in recent years has experienced a rapid growth also in the primary sector, thanks to substantial incentives guaranteed by energy policies, simultaneous reduction of investment costs and tax benefits. A fast BEM for the analysis of damaged structures with bonded piezoelectric sensors

A fast boundary element method for the analysis of three-dimensional solids with cracks and adhesively bonded piezoelectric patches, used as strain sensors, is presented. The piezoelectric sensors, as well as the adhesive layer, are modeled using a 3D state-space finite element approach. The piezoelectric patch model is formulated taking into account the full electro-mechanical coupling and embodying the suitable boundary conditions and it is eventually expressed in terms of the interface variables, to allow a straightforward coupling with the underlying host structure, which is modeled through a 3D dual boundary element method, for accurate analysis of cracks. Reconfigurable waveguides defined by selective fluid filling in two-dimensional phononic metaplates

Abstract We investigate two-dimensional phononic metaplates consisting of a periodic array of cups on a thin epoxy plate that is perforated with periodic cross holes. The cups are individually filled with water or remain empty, in view of creating reconfigurable phononic waveguides. Phononic band gaps exist for empty or filled epoxy cups, leading to waveguides defined with either positive or negative contrast. Straight and 90° bent waveguides are considered experimentally. Cathodic reduction of hexavalent chromium coupled with electricity generation achieved by reverse-electrodialysis processes using salinity gradients

Abstract A new approach for the simultaneous generation of electric energy and the treatment of waters contaminated by recalcitrant pollutants using salinity gradients was proposed. Reverse electrodialysis allows for the generation of electric energy from salinity gradients. Carrier Transport in GaAs Nanowires Using Surface Acoustic Waves

ABSTRACTThe oscillating piezoelectric field of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) is employed to transport photoexcited electrons and holes in GaAs nanowires (NWs) transferred to a SAW beam line on a LiNbO3 crystal. We show that carriers generated in the NW by a focused light spot can be acoustically transported to a second location, where they recombine emitting short light pulses. The results presented here demonstrate the high-frequency manipulation of carriers in NWs without the use of electrical contacts, which opens new perspectives for applications in opto-electronic devices operating at GHz frequencies.

Tracks induced in TeO2 by heavy ions at low velocities

On the basis of its thermal properties, TeO2 crystal was selected as an insulator with low threshold electronic stopping power for track formation Set. The crystals were irradiated by S, Zn, Mo, Kr, Te and Pb ions and the optical absorption and track formation were studied. Comparison is made with the published results on LiNbO3 ,Y 3Fe5O12 and SiO2 quartz. Good quantitative agreement is found with the predictions of the thermal spike model of Szenes with respect to Set and the variation of the track size with the electronic stopping power Se. Ferroelectricity in {N(CH3)4}2ZnI4

1988

Dielectric properties of the {N(CH 3 ) 4 } 2 ZnI 4 crystal were studied between room temperature and 4.2 K. Two phase transitions were seen from dielectric constant anomalies at T 1 =254 K and T c =210 K on cooling. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed along the c -direction below T c with a low frequency applied field of 0.0025 Hz. The spontaneous polarization obtained by pyroelectric charge measurement tended to be 2.5×10 -3 C/m 2 at 0 K.

Crystal structure, phase transition and ferroelectric properties of the [(CH3)3NH]3[Sb2Cl9(1 x)Br9x] (TMACBA) mixed crystals

The paraelectric–ferroelectric phase transition in the [(CH3)3NH]3[Sb2Cl9(1−x) Br9x] (TMACBA) mixed crystals is investigated by the differential scanning calorimetry, dilatometric and dielectric methods. The phase transition is found at 363.5, 362.7, 360.5 and 350.9 K (on cooling) for TMACBA crystals with x = 0, 0.02, 0.17 and 0.42, respectively. The crystal structures of the pure bromine analogue (x = 1), TMABA, and the mixed crystal TMACBA (x = 0.55) are determined at 297 K. TMABA crystallizes in the trigonal space group Rc: a = 15.098(2) A, c = 21.906(4) A, Z = 3, R1 = 0.0393, wR2 = 0.0746. Effect of Hydrostatic Pressure on the Phase Transitions of {N(CH3)4}2ZnCl4-xBrxMixed Crystals

Single crystals of the solid solution system {N(CH 3 ) 4 } 2 ZnCl 4- x Br x have been prepared in a low x region, and the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase transitions were measured for x =0.2 and 0.3. The normal-to-incommensurate phase transition temperatures increase linearly with increasing pressure with the rates of 0.126 K/MPa and 0.129 K/MPa for x =0.2 and 0.3 crystals, respectively. The ferroelectric III phase disappears at about 60 MPa for x =0.2 crystal. On the other hand, phase III is not observed for the x =0.3 crystal both at 0 pressure and at high pressures.
